  1. *snicker* I like the savant explanation (I even think Brandon mentioned that somewhere); I think we can leave Feruchemy out of this. Combining that with duralumin (which no one but tLR was supposed to know about) should account for . Really, tLR's power came from the knowledge he withheld. (dang Preservation grumble)
  2. 1) First thing: it's ChayShan, not "ClayShan" 2) It only just struck me how similar Seons are to [some] spren. There might be something there. 3) zas, this is a question that I've wrestled with for a while. Really, I think the answer hinges on us clarifying the difference between two different (similar, but very different) relationships: magic user:Shard and magic user:Creation. (I just started writing down my outline to this, but it's turning into several pages, so I'll save it for its own post) 4) Again, the outline for my response just reached two pages, so I'll try and do a second post for this 5) I personally don't think Skai would be Sacrifice, for a few reasons (a ) Brandon added in the sacrificial aspect as kind of an afterthought: :While this in no way means the Brandon can't change his mind and make sacrifice a more integral aspect of FjorDor, it is telling. (b ) I feel like it's not as basic an intent as the other Shards... (c ) ...especially since there would be some serious overlap with Endowment. It seems to me that the 16 Aspects are all going to be very different parts that together make one balanced Adonal (or whatever). I could see it being something related to Discipline, or Order (things that sacrifice fold into). There's no smoking gun here. It all just adds up to a feeling on my end
  3. and here i'm used to video game admins kicking people out for modding!
  4. Dang it, zas! You beat me to it
  5. Especially with the Returned using up breaths and Return-ing (see what I did there?) them to Endowment (I know that's an unconfirmed theory, but still).
  6. Welcome Arrowlyn! We could always use another lurker
  7. I chose Physical for Preservation because her Preservation-magic (allomancy) was genetic. You might be right about who affects what about Vin but, regardless of how she's affected, it's interesting to speculate as to which of the 2 didn't want her to see Hoid. Maybe she felt what Syl felt but, having her specific life experience and personality, she chose to cut and run (while Syl, inquisitive little truster that she is, merely observes). Maybe that's the extent to which Shard-waves were involved. It has a feel of simplicity (and character-driven writing) that resonates with me.
  8. The real question is this: what caused the dissonance in Vin? Should we read nothing into it? Was it just a way of characterizing Vin as instinctual? Or was it something Cosmeric? Was there Something (some Intent, some shard-connection) in Hoid that made Something in Vin recoil? I so, which of her Influences was it: Ruin (who had a strong Cognitive influence on her) or Preservation (who had a strong Physical influence on her)? Either choice would have some really interesting implications on Hoid, his powers, and his Intent. Thus ends my spontaneous bedtime wandering
  9. Why can't it be like on Scadrial: separate magic systems are Fueled by one common element? Instead of metal, it's stormlight. The thing that would differentiate the Shard magics would be all of the other stuff (Foci, Intent, net energy, etc). I feel like precedent has already been set for this, as well as explanation given by Brandon (stormlight is how the people of Roshar interact with the powers of Creation due to the genetic, realmatic balance specific to their world, etc.). Maybe I'm way off; I only just realized that this was my unchallenged assumption throughout my read of WoK. Either way, I'm sticking with it for now. If this were the case, it would make complete sense for Odium to amp up the storms. Sure, increased storms would give Honor more to work with. But here's the thing: Honor's dead. Odium killed him. So Odium probably isn't terribly concerned with giving his fallen enemy ammo. (Whether this is intelligent of Odium is another matter. That does tend to be the universal flaw of BBEGs: hubris)
  10. Will your Shard section cover Unifying Magical Theory (things we've been discussing like energy sources, net energy, fuels, rulesetc). I see you have a section on Foci and Investing, so you might've been planning on this already
  11. I've only done a couple of wiki entries, but I've added a THEORIES section to each entry (that merits one) where I put a theory that is reasonably well-supported but not 100% confirmed. That way we can keep "fact" from "theory" separate while still having all useful information at our fingertips (ex - http://www.17thshard.com/wiki/Honor)

That's what I always imagined it to be - like atium/larasium
  13. now THIS is a vein worth exploring! good call!
  14. ...distract them with clothes In case of the cast of Jersey Shore forming a cabal and taking over the world...
  15. Objectively, I think it looks pretty cool. The feel, however, is a little too abstract for the Fantasy genre. Plus, I'd always imagined the Elantrian light to be more blueish than green
  16. ...duck and cover In case of spontaneous combustion...
  17. Congrats Shardees! Sharders? Shardites
  18. So, my general approach to the underlying system of magic is breaking what we know down to their base parts. One of the recurring 'atoms' is the net energy (as described by Brandon in his Mistborn annotations). In my brainstorming and cataloging, I wanted to touch base and see if you thought I'm off in my existing categorizations: Mistborn Way of Kings Warbreaker Elantris Net + Allomancy Surgebinding AonDor Net 0 Feruchemy Soulcasting Awakening ShinDor Net - Hemalurgy FjorDor :Let the arguing commence! I'll begin the stone throwing by saying that we really don't know enough about Soulcasting to classify it on this table. But I did anyway
  19. I would like to announce that the blizzard is over. The Wampas, however, are still biting.
  20. Twinners!: I started reading Brandon right after Mistborn 1 too, and I'm also horrible at guessing things on my first read-through. His worlds are just so awesome that theorizing is as good an excuse as any to try and hang onto that "first read" feeling, you know? Anyway, welcome Old Aggie!
  21. First impressions: - Brandon is getting a lot slyer about what he RAFOs (referring to the AD/BCE question). He's learned that you guys are good at taking a mile when he's given an inch -
  22. Nice! Good call. I skimmed through the book 2 times looking for that reference, knowing it was there but not able to find it. Thanks DariusJenai!
  23. Ien is actually the aon for Wisdom. I looked through the Ars Arcanum and didn't see any aon for healing. Shao would make sense, but we'll have to wait and see (I'm only about halfway through my Elantris re-read, if it's in there at all). If anyone knows which aon is used for healing, let us know. EDIT: I stand corrected, CrazyRioter. You're right: Ien is the base aon of healing, assuming that Raoden's memory of his healing is accurate. I just got to that part in the book (p. 266) This is a question that has nagged at me for a while. I have a few theories, all equally (ill-)supported by what we know. Theory #1: Like you said, the healing Aon itself is different from all other Aons. ---Objection: While this is the simplest (in the Occam sense) of the theories, it seems a little wand-wavy for Brandon's style. Theory #2: Aons act differently when targeting a person. Therefore, they haywire differently when targeting a person. ---Objection: Same as the Theory #1 (but to a lesser degree) Theory #3: (This theory is a little out there, but it might have a kernel of something.) The reason the Seala case is an exception is because of Dilaf's presence (I asked this question on the recent open call for answers from Brandon. We'll see if it's a RAFO), because of his FjorDor (or DakhorDor, or whatever we're deciding to call it) nature. There was, for lack of a better analogy, a kind of incompatible wave interference while the Elantrian was casting the Aon to heal Seala. After all, it says in the book that the spell "went wrong," not that a mistake was made or a line left out. ---Objection: It kind of throws out the window my big explanation earlier on in the thread :/ ---Objection: It presupposes that the power behind FjorDor (presumably Skai's, but not necessarily... but that's another discussion) was also involved with the Reod, an assumption which (as far as I know) has been pretty much discounted on the forums and by Brandon. ---Objection: Assuming that we get over the previous objection, it presupposes that there is some kind of innate animosity/incompatibility between Aona's Shard and the shard behind FjorDor. While this is possible, it hasn't been established and would be a little too reminiscent of MB, which you'd think Brandon would be avoiding (unless, of course there's an underlying logic to why opposing shards would land on the same planet (magnets, opposite poles attracting, etc.) but, again, that is a question for a different thread.) Anyway, it presupposes something pretty major for which we have little (some, but little) evidence. Anyway, those are the explanations that I've come up with, though all are clearly lacking.
