    the Great Elantris Reread

    1) 100% 2) 100% Including annotations. w00t w00t!
  2. Actually, that almost matches how the gender thing happens in utero. Er wait...
  3. Down with Jon Snow! I still can't believe that he won against Alvin Maker. Are you kidding?! The guy literally has the ability to instantaneously unravel your DNA, and... *goes off to his angry place* (of course, now that I think about it, I'm kind of glad that Vin doesn't have to face Alvin, because I'd probably have to vote against her)
  4. So, I remember spending some time in a metaphysics course or two about the reality of multiple infinities. I remember it was explained mostly by showing how not all series of numbers map to each other (but I could be remembering it wrong). Could you walk me through that reasoning?
  5. Nah, that's Silus. I only had 3 parts, and now my Cognitive aspect is holding on for dear life!
  6. oh dear. i'm running out of parts!
  7. I've been wondering the same thing, Endra.
  8. yeah. it's just... the 2 plot lines i couldn't stand - "perrin/faile" and "aes sedai/kin/windfinder/wise women politics" - became central and things i actually cared about - thom, rand, matt, asha'man, the forsaken, ya know... tarmon gai'don - seemed to fade into the background. who knows? i might dedicate the summer to powering through the series one more time
  9. Thanks Peter. That's what I figured. Sorry everyone It's cool, E. I actually recorded a lot of the impromptu question session at the signing (I have the bit about physics vs magic). It doesn't seem like there were any Cosmere questions other than mine though, although hearing him repeatedly call us his wealthy patrons was pretty fun I'm totally gonna leverage that for future attempts to wheedle answers out of him
  10. Seriously Feather, welcome. I love seeing another kindred spirit (even though a tiny part of me died inside when you said that you didn't like Elantris. I forgive you.)

    Poke

welcome Josh! fun fact: for half a second, I couldn't tell whether your subject line was "poke" as in what you do to friends on Facebook or "poke" as in the first half of Pokemon. Yeah, I've been trolling the Entertainment forum too much
  12. welcome E! like you and Chaos, I pretty much only stick to Cosmere books. I've tried reading the WoT 3 times, and i stop mid book 8 or 9 every. time. I feel like some kind of failure (but not really. I'm OK with loving just those first 5 books). I did, however, just buy the Alcatraz series, so I'll be starting that. But hey, 17th Shard is for lovers of Brandon at every stage of canon completion
  13. Now to catch up with what's been going on here this past week!

  14. whew! hell week at work is over! no more 12-hour days for awhile (just the usual 10 :D)

  15. Man, it is raining awesome around here! Currently watching a series of classic fantasy movies while pulling an all-nighter for work. Up now: Willow. Oh, the Val Kilmer quotes we could quote...
  16. For the time being After I see enough examples of what other theories are being espoused, I might leave the nest. Who knows? At least this way my ignorance/laziness can provide some chuckles (On second thought, I may have just started the 17th Shard equivalent of the party system. Uuuuggh!)
  17. And, as per usual, CrazyRioter beats me to a post again I was reading last night, and I realized that they always say "Idos Domi!", which roughly translates into "Merciful Love!" Could be no more than an expression. Could be a clue as to the true name for Aona's Shard
  18. Is there some way we could have a link to Statuses, the way we do with Blogs? The only way I've figured out of getting to everyone's status updates is very roundabout.
  19. Interesting. As well as why the Elantrians just gave everything away for free. (The merchants had to harass them to not just give away luxury items so they would be able to have a livelihood.) Charity is possible (although, my un-backed-up-by-data-opinion is that Charity doesn't sound very Shard-y)
  20. Heck yeah! At opening night for the last movie, we all took a "what house are you in" test. Now, for the final opening night, we're gonna be sporting our individual house robes. Good times. Also, MoanIng Myrtle is REALLY creepy in this movie. Way creepier than rejuvenated-Voldemort (and only slightly less creepy than baby-Voldemort)
  21. I've got just one question for you: Can you do the hippogriff (nana na, nana na, nana na!)
  22. No, he only listed the books in which we see Splinters. I was just listing what I believe the Splinters to have been. That last post was definitely not fact (and might even be good question fodder for the next correspondent)
  23. vomited out Chaos. BOOM goes the dynamite! This is gonna be a fun, self-referential story, isn't it?
  24. Harry Potter weekend on ABC Family <.< >.> what?!
  25. Agreed. I remember where you (I think) pointed out that Brandon always says "is a Sliver" vs. "has a Splinter." Also (I forgot to add this comment to my writeup), unless I'm way off, the known Splinters that Brandon alluded to were Seons & Skaze (Elantris), Deific Breaths and possibly even Nightblood (Warbreaker), and [honor]spren (Way of Kings). I didn't confirm these with Brandon *again, slapping my own hand* but I'm reasonably sure we all agree to this, yes?
