  1. The Letter is in the epigraphs of WoK Part 2. The Response is in the epigraphs of WoR Part 4.
  2. If you or someone you trust is handy with a soldering iron, you can replace the battery to get the original cartridge working again. Just unscrew the back of the plastic cartridge, and the battery is either CR2032 or LR44 if I am not mistaken. The issue is that the battery was soldered into place, so you need to remove the metal, replace the battery, and then replace the metal. Some buddies of mine fixed one of their Gold versions three years ago.
  3. We know word of mouth does happen. That's how David got all of his Epic knowledge. As someone who is devoting his life to knowing all he can about Epics, don't you think a form of news that delivered such to him would be something David would pay attention to? That is the point I'm getting at. They would do that. So why isn't it ever mentioned? In Newcago it makes sense, what with everything turned to steel. But Babilar? Any other city? Tia never mentions how inconvinient Newcago is lacking news. None of the Reckoners ever mention it. Why not? If it does contain information on Epics, why are they not using it? It would be an invaluable tool to utilize. Yet they don't. I'm saying it's because they can't. It's an interesting conundrum that I think I'll ask Brandon about, if I ever get to meet him.
  4. Those are good nerfs. It never occured to me to cap the amount changed. But it is probability manipulation. That is my point, there is no line separating the two unless you add nerfs. That being said, I was merely pointing out the need for nerfs, so you folks didn't wind up with a God Epic.
  5. Finished Firefight last night. It was very enjoyable, though I felt a little let down with the ending. It climaxed, but unlike most Sandernovels it never gave me closure. It climaxed with no resolution, which is fine when you consider there's a third book coming, but it is still a feeling I don't want to be having upon finishing a novel.

  6. Just something that came to mind, have you guys made the Probability Distortion Epic yet? If not, I'm not sure you want to, as powers over probability are insane. Oh, I have a weakness? Well, my chances of ever coming across it are now 0% Oh, my enemy has a 0.001% chance of dieing in the next 5 minutes? Now it's 95% Oh, I'm short on cash? I'll check under this rock for an envelope with $100, and my chances of succeeding are now 100% Oh, I need to travel three states away? My probability of just suddenly teleporting with no adverse effects is now 100% Oh, I need to fly? The probability of me being able to fly with perfect control of my position in 3-D space is now 100% Oh, I don't have a prime invincibility? Well now there is a 100% chance that I do. The Epic would even be able to grant powers: Oh, you're not an Epic? Well, there is now a 100% chance you are. or Oh, you're not an Epic? Well the chance of Calamity choosing you to recieve powers in the next 5 seconds is now 100% Powers over probability are ridiculously OP. I don't exactly have a different solution to offer, but keep in mind how powerful of a character you'd be creating. I suppose you could nerf the powers, but I'm not sure how. The easy nerf of "can't affect probabilities that are 0%" is actually impossible, because nothing has a probability of 0, they have probabilities of 0.0000000...00000001%. Anyways, just thought I'd point that out.
  7. I don't forsee Obliteration going to conquer his fear at all. David didn't tell him he'll become good by conquering it (David didn't know). David just told him that his worst fear, the thing he has nightmares about, is his weakness, and that it's the same for all Epics. Obliteration wants to kill all other Epics, therefore he thanks David and ditches. I see no reason for him to then go conquer his own fear. If anything, he'll avoid it like the plague now that he knows. If anything, I think Limelight will go to a new town (possibly Atlanta) and make a huge show of his powers. This will draw Obliteration to prioritize killing him, and thus there'll be a three way clash between Limelight, Obliteration, and the Reckoners. Obliteration will then either die or conquer his fear, same goes for Limelight, and they'll handle Calamity somehow as well. But in regard to OP, I think only Megan will have a lasting effect on The Hunt for Phaedrus.
  8. Here's my question: why are we making the assumption that there is even news to watch/read? I've only read each of the Reckoners once, so correct me if I neglect any info or get anything wrong. I do not recall anywhere the mention of news programs, or even television, or newspapers. Particularly in Newcago. David not watching the news post Steelheart's arrival makes perfect sense. As for prior to his arrival, I think it is a very steep assumption to say there would be news programs at all. Let's look at the likely events aroundone year after the time of Calamity's arrival. A year after Calamity arriving, and people start gaining powers, every individual who gained powers at that moment would all enter their Rending at the same time. If we assume that only one individual from every large city Epicified (which I think is a conservative guess), that's still an "attack" on every large city all at once. National or International news programs wouldn't know what to cover, and likely wouldn't cover them all. In addition, as an Epic with a secret weakness, what's the one thing you don't want to happen? I would say it's pesky cameras and news reporters following you around, waiting to capture your weakness on tape. If I were an Epic, the first thing I'd do is take out the news stations. Furthermore, we know consolidated information is not a thing in ReckonEarth. Tia, when searching for information, doesn't go "online" to search a database, she has to contact lorists to share their information with her. Everything seems to be hard copy stored, rather than digital. And what is digital is only stored as local copies. News isn't easily accessible, like at all. So people not knowing about these major Epics in various cities doesn't surprise me one bit. It wouldn't surprise me if we learn that all forms of news organizations were wiped out within a week of Epics rising. Editted: for a mistake that didn't change my argument at all.
  9. Your stormlight link has a typo, so the link is no good. You spelled Stormlgiht in the url section.
  10. Though the spelling was picky, at least you didn't have to get the title exactly. I left out all the articles, and it picked up my answers just fine. Hit us with a Bad Description Delightful!!!
  11. A fan steps up to the table, her hands jitter from excitement. Holding out her copy of Firefight, the author himself reaches out and snags it from her. "Hello," he says, "do you have any questions?" The smile that plasters onto her face reaches from ear to ear. She stammers, never having been in the presence of an author before. "I..uh..I was wondering if you could explain how you keep up such a tremendous, amazing writng pa-" A shock runs through her mind, a tingling sensation tickling her spine, "-er, I mean, could you please offer some details as to the situation in Oregon? Specifically Portland? Or could you detail if Edmund overcame his fear at all?"
  12. I definitely agree. But not everyone is "fan enough" to be as in the know as us here on 17th Shard. Still makes you want to shake them or Gibbs-slap them...
  13. As frustrating as it can be when people ask things like this *looks at Kobold's post above*, in their defense the Reckonerverse is very regimented and organized like the Cosmere. It's an easy mistake the think the Epic Epidemic is Cosmere.
  14. I don't think Rocket was the best, just that the story revolving around their games were the best. But yes, agree to disagree. Your Hector must have been under-used then. Lyn is my favorite as well, but she is a rather niche character, as her class is simply the combination of Archer and Swordsmaster. Hector's class is an enhanced General, and Eliwood's is an enhanced Paladin, making most people view them as superior to Lyn, as both of those classes are far less niche than Lyn's. That said, my Hector wrecks the Dragon when I play it. All you need is two healers (preferably Canas and Lucius, though Nino works as well if you put in the time to level her up) for Athos, Hector, or Eliwood. Then play defensively. Don't actively attack it on your turns. Instead, spend your turns healing from the damage it deals you on it's turns. Equip your healers with Physic Staffs (or give one of them the Fortify staff to remove the need for a second healer), and you'll be done in roughly 3-5 turns, depending on the level of the character. Athos may take a little longer than that. Like I said before, if using Hector equip him with Armads, and if using Eliwood, equip him with Durandal. Considering Athos has to join you in the fight, it's one of the easiest levels in the entire game, and the room prior to it (with all the resurrected bosses) is the "true" final boss as it is much harder. And to comment on Eliwood being awful, Eliwood is known as the gamble character. I'm sure you know how the RNG works within the game, and for whatever reason Eliwood is always either supremely good, or really bad. He's never in the middle. I've experienced both ends, my friends have all experienced both ends, and people I've spoken to on the internet have experienced both ends. It's a really weird phenomenon. In my experience, he's much better in Hector's Story when you can class him up much sooner than in his own Story, because he has more level-ups to hopefully off-set any terrible ones he may have had.

  17. I'm not sure if this is a new thing you came up with for the specific question in this AMA, or if you've been using it, but I highly approve of the tag "Brandalization" for when Brandon talks about signing his books in stores/airports. I'm having a fit of chuckles over here.
  18. The problem with giving Dex-Starr his own movie is that he's a Red Lantern. Unless they completely alter the character's history, he's always been an old Reddie, which means he's a mindless, blood-acid spewing, killing all who deserve vigilante justice monster kitty that purs when Atrocitus pets him. He would have no dialogue, and ultimately would be his own movie's villain, as he'd be unable to learn whatever lesson the movie tries to teach. Like I said, they could drastically alter everything we know about the character and make him one of the self-thinking Red Lanterns, but then there is absolutely zero comic material to pull from, unfortunately.
  19. Interestingly, I disagree with you on almost every point you make. That means I'm not going to try and discuss, but I would like to say a few things. Gen I and II did have plot. Arguably they are the best plot in the series in my mind. Everything dealing with Team Rocket is the plot, and the quest to get badges is the excuse to get you moving through the world (because they didn't bother conncting most of the Rocket related business). Also, Legendaries are a part of the plot in Gen II. Not to the extent that they are in Gen III and on, though. Eliwood actually isn't the only one capable of dealing with the Fire Dragon. Hector with Armads is also a good choice, and Athos was built to be able to beat the boss if you play conservatively (as the Dragon doesn't move) with Forblaze equipped. Though it has probably been a while for you, I highly recommend going back and beating the game. From the sounds of it you never beat Eliwood's Story, which means you never got the far superior Hector's Story. For anyone who hasn't played this game, it is in my top ten games of all time, and I highly recommend it. Unfortunately the only two ways you can get it are for the GBA (original) or the Wii U VC.
  20. All right, I see your point. My arguments are that the gems have not been shown to have any greater function than to be the Stormlight batteries we've been discussing. Brandon has detailed gem types to no greater purpose in scenes that do not relate to Shardplate, causing his specification of gem type in regards to Shardplate to be nothing special. In addition, the arena fight where Kaladin fuels the helm with his Stormlight, and the helm functions as normal without gems in it, is pretty hard evidence. To top that off, we know Sprenblades do not require gems, while Deadblades do. With Shardplate being counterpart to the Shardblades, it seems fairly obvious to me. You might disagree with that assessment, and again that assessment might be wrong, but that's where I'm coming from.
  21. Splinters I agree, but we're talking Slivers. There is no doubt that Susey is a Splinter, for sure, with him being Returned. But I just don't think he fits the bill for Sliver. Brandon defined it at some point as having held the power of a Shard. No one in Warbreaker (except maybe Hoid, depending on his unknown past), fits that.
  22. When a minor character in a Sanderson book has the same name as you, spelling and all, and you have to take a few minutes to compose yourself, even though you know it's not named after you. I'm in the Reckonerverse, and my name's not David or Megan! Heck yeah for mildly uncommon names!
  23. When you said old timey I thought you meant more along the lines of mid-90's. But I can play along. Gen III of Pokemon is hands down the greatest generation of old Pokemon. Ruby, all the way. StarFox 64 was my jam on the N64 (as well as Hydro Thunder). I also don't think any discussion of that time period is complete without mentioning Tony Hawk Pro Skater (thank you Dunkum). I don't even like skateboarding and that was a good game. Need For Speed Most Wanted, as mentioned above, is definitely the best of the series. Unfortunately Forza and Gran Tourismo popularized the driving sim aspect over the racing, and Need For Speed only got worse from there (I'm not a fan of driving sim, but I love me some good racing). Speaking of good racing, Diddy Kong Racing anyone? As far as PC goes, Battlefront 2 and Battle for Middle-Earth were my go to games. Sunk ungodly amount of hours into those. I also can't feel comfortable until mentioning everyone's favorite Hedgehog. Sonic 3, followed by Sonic & Knuckles, were awesome. Sonic CD was really good too, albeit not played by many. And to comment on Donkey Kong, they are platformers nearly identical to Mario, but they are much much harder. If you've ever found yourself wishing Mario games had a bit more challenge, pick up a Donkey Kong game. Fun times ahead. Of all those games, I think the N64 is the newest that I'd consider "old" at this point. Doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the rest, though.
  24. Doesn't change anything? DOESN'T CHANGE ANYTHING? I thought they made quite a few useful changes that made the game better than the original GCN version. One such change was the addition of the Speed Sail (Fast Sail? Quick Sail? I forget the official name). That addition alone removes much of the tedious nature of traveling the world. Other minor additions, such as granting you the color pictograph immediately, rather than requiring you to do a side quest that eats up a bottle, were nice changes as well. All in all the little things they tweaked make the experience much better overall. You don't like the Wii U controller? So do you not own an XBox or PS system either? The Wii U Pro controller is the controller for the Wii U, and it is essentially the love child of the 360 controller and the GameCube controller. The GamePad is just a Pro Controller with a screen thrown in the middle, and I've only played one game that required me to use it. For the most part, it is reserved for multiplayer purposes, in which Nintendo has made fantastic use of it. Allowing me to play Hyrule Warriors with a friend, and not having to share a screen, is ingenious. Creating multiplayer gameplay like in NintendoLand where the person using the GamePad can make use of the screen to see things the other players can't is ingenious. I understand the aversion to something so large and lunky, but use it before you judge it. And so long as you aren't planning on playing Rayman Legends, I have yet to play a game that required I use the GamePad. Instead, I turn the console on, navigate the home menu, and play all my games using a Pro controller. The only negative I can even think of about the GamePad is that it auto turns on when I start up the system, so unless I'm okay with having the screen on while I'm playing on my television, I have to take the two extra seconds to turn the screen off to conserve battery. Really not a big deal, and definitely not something you should allow to keep you from experiencing the best next gen console (regardless what the media tells you, the Wii U has the best line-up of games, period). Back to the Pro controller, it is honestly one of the best controllers I've ever used. It fits in my hands nicely (way better than 360), the buttons are in a comfortable position (like GameCube), and the battery lasts over 80 hours (they advertise 80, but mine goes longer). It's a fantastic controller that I prefer over the GameCube controller (on that note, the GameCube controller currently only works for Smash Bros, to my knowledge). The only complaint I have is that the triggers are digital and not analogue, which affects racing games most noticeably. I don't play racing games, so the lack of gradual compression doesn't bother me, but I know it urks some people. On top of that, the only controller I've ever handled that feels better than the Wii U Pro Contoller is the PS4's controller. So my point is this; if the controller is actually the only thing other than money keeping you from grabbing the Wii U, don't let it. Buy a Wii U Pro controller as well and enjoy an amazing console.
  25. Though a reasonable argument, Brandon has pointed out gem types for no reason before. Why specify that the puddle in the Chasms glowed that purplish color due to a gem? If I recall correctly that served no greater purpose. Just because there is a level of detail does not make the detail important by default. That being said, you could be completely right, and the gems do serve a greater purpose. I find myself doubting it, though, as I think there is more reason to think they don't.
