Do Feruchemists draw from the entire metalmind at once ?
Quantus replied to erarufus's question in Cosmere Q&A
Per this, metalminds can be broken and still accessed, which implies that the Investiture gets spread evenly over the whole object, which jives with the realmic idea of an object having a whole identity (ie shadesmar beads, etc). It could get wonky with Copperminds where you are storing and retrieving a discrete thing, but I dont know if that applies to other metals. -
How all deadeyes travelled to Shadesmar ?
Quantus replied to samsocial's topic in Stormlight Archive
Why would anyone in Lasting Integrity know her? She was a Cultivationspren from the generation before any of the living Honorspren (other than Syl). As to your other question, it said they will wander into the bead sea when left alone, trying to reach the location of their Blade form, since that's where they would be. So a whole bunch of them are likely wandering zombies on the bottom of the bead sea. But even if we did meet them there's nothing to let anyone recognize that random deadeye; it's not like the spren in any way resembles the blade. -
How all deadeyes travelled to Shadesmar ?
Quantus replied to samsocial's topic in Stormlight Archive
Deadeyes are the Shadesmar expression of the Blade (like a bead or flame), and as I understand it they both exist simultaneously for the most part. It was stated in OB that a deadeye left to their own devices will attempt to reach the location of their physical form. -
I dont think that would be a barrier, we already have a spren that successfully refuses to become a shardblade and takes a non-lethal form instead. And we've seen Radiants that will never be fighters, Stump comes to mind. I think he'd do better as a Truthwatcher, and I would like to see a classic one in the supporting cast. Although it might be interesting to see him use Edgedancer Friction to prevent illness by preventing anything from touching or sticking to his hands during his Doctorly duties, or I guess when he doesn't have enough stormlight for ReGrowth for plot reasons. Hmm, maybe he becomes an Enlightened Dustbringer and gets Abrasion and some variant Division?

Honestly I think Nightblood becomes an active Perpendicularity when drawn, at this point.

Yes, entirely. Vin's Earring took powers from a baby. It is confirmed that you cannot steal with an already charged spike, If you tried to spike into a baby pre-birth, it would either steal something (roll of the dice) from the mother and kill her, and implant it into the baby, or else miss the mother's bind points and steal something from the baby (likely killing both).

Off the top of my head: Lerasium Connects you to the Shard of a Godmental that is alloyed with it, and as a side effect it's pure form will Connect you to Preservation when provided no target via an alloy. Other known Godmetal: SA Spoiler If what we thought was pure Atium is actually an alloy with Electrum, then I think it Inverts the behavior of the metal it is alloyed with, so with Electrum it made the Internal/Self effect become External. Alloyed with Gold it would effect others, with the External Temporals it would make them Self effect only (Super OP, that). That starts to make thematic sense with Feruchemy too. If Lerasium Connects you and Atium Inverts Effects, the perfect alloy of the two Connects you to the Metallic Arts art while granting a more persistent Inversion ability, tuned to each of the Metals.

About the 5th book's Amazon listing
Quantus replied to Fulano's topic in Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians
It definitely says book five on the cover art, and the release date is correct for book five, so I think you are fine. A lot of times amazon will take the First Book's description and use it for the whole series (to avoid spoilers if nothing else?). -
Savantism as intended is a result of overuse of a type of investiture, which causes warping and/or damage to the Spiritweb. It has not always been presented this way, but the intent is for there to always be a downside to it. If it is just a cool trick, it will tend to fall into either a Resonance of two powers or just a rare learned skill. It is confirmed that Hemalurgy cannot transfer Savantism. I believe that is because Savantism is not a localized effect, rather it's more the result of "crossed wires" in the broader spiritweb structure. So a Spike doesn't transfer it because it's not going to steal enough of the relevant spiritweb (ie all of it). However you can get Savantism from overusing powers granted by Hemalurgy, same as if they were natural.

Do you think the third Truthwatcher at Urithiru will be significant?
Quantus replied to Cocoa's topic in Stormlight Archive
I think it will be something to do with the cultural politics of the relevant Spren. There is only the one Elsecaller, and we know why. There were only a few Windrunners but will soon be more, and we now know why. There aren't any human Willshapers, and we now know why. In all cases it has a very little to do with the mortals in the equation and everything to do with their Spren's current culture. But I think it is telling that they are currently the most open to "Enlightenment" by Sja-Anat, and that will likely play a big part in their story... -
NIghtblood will feed on any form of Investiture that it's wielder has, but that can be Stormlight, Breaths, or even the Investiture of actively Burning metals. If those run out, the last Investiture it eats will be the innate Investiture of the person's Existence (something all people and/or Sapient beings have).

From a purely thematic stance I really hope this is in Venli's future...

I tend to assume so to, but Nightblood is such a special case, especially with the fact that he's still theoretically just Invested Steel and not pure Manifested Godmetal Investiture. His native for IS a sword. Which is true for Honorblades too, I would think.

Fun! Forgive me while I challenge the assumptions a bit. I am entirely convinced that Bondsmith Plate will be made of Gloryspren, on the basis of how they were congregating in huge numbers around Dalinar in very much the same way the Windspren were congregating around Kaladin from OB onward. Also, I would classify Logicspren and Creationspren as the same sort of "Passions"/emotion class of spren as the more classic spren like Fearspren. The two categories being those that represent Cognitive concepts and those that represent Physical ones. I dont think the Emotionspren are more fickle so much as they are simply less common in the Physical Realm because Humans are more fickle/fleeting than the natural things, so they are pulled into the Physical Realm less often and for shorter periods. But the Spren in Shadesmar felt that way about Windspren Kaladin was attracting, who spend more time in the Physical Realm. EDIT: I hit post before I got to the second one. I think "Unsavory" might be a wildly subjective thing that could still be compatible with certain Orders. Decayspren in particular might makes as much sense as Firespren for Dustbringer, for example, since Division can do either, and the particular Surge use in both cases is "Decay" as an equivalent to "Full Lashing" or "ReGrowth".

Agreed. Honestly I think they will remain looking like their Sword-forms, since the Spren looked at that to mimic the Bond and make radiants. Presumably they would see their humanoid spren forms, the same way Soulcasters look like the spren the make them up when viewed that way.

We did the math a while back. Those are the two main factors (Friction drag vs volume displacement) are separate and mostly independent factors in Drag calculations, with their own governing equations. Removing Friction will help a lot, but the faster you get (literally the closer to the Speed of Sound) the more force it takes to shove the mass of air out of the way (compressing it mostly) and the more that side of the equation takes over. At more reasonable speeds the Friction element plays a bigger role.

Theory: Such a person would need a properly Connected Physical Form so that they can be a Real Boy and not an Investiture Ghost. Having the Form makes him closer to a normal living person, instead of having an existence that needs constant Investiture to support. Notice how Ishar was trying to "make Bodies" for spren that would match their Cognitive Aspect fully. I think he's trying to Grow himself a Real Body (as opposed to whatever the Heralds are using right now) that he can use as a Vehicle to leave Roshar, and he's using Spren as the closest Test Subject he could find short of another Herald.

As a squire or holding an honorblade are probably the lowest impact methods.

It's still funny to me that he was supposed to deliver a sequel Shadows of Self and he showed up with "twins", having also written Bands of Mourning as a "warm-up" to "get back into the world."
-
Corollary: Could a Gasper Radiant "breathe" in a bunch of Stormlight and then store it as Investiture in a Cadmium Metalmind? This question really digs into the nature of Investiture that is supposedly fully manifested as a gaseous material. But if Gaspers get the same sort of selectivity as Bendalloy does for food vs water, I think they should be able to store specific gasses, and both conceptually for the Intent and physically by science, Mist or Stormlight should be just another gas.

Yes as far as we can tell, but they are all in flux and subject to change, and it doesnt sound like he's really trying to hold himself to a specific order. Lift is currently Book 6, but that is the only one that's been actually given a number that I can find. The first five have already seen some re-ordering from his initial plan.
-
You'll want Elantris in the mix, too, forgot to mention; there have been cameo's. Emperors soul doesn't have any actual connections, but it's magic system gets into really interesting aspects of the cosmere's shared mechanics and the story is pretty often claimed as peoples favorite.
-
I'd move Warbreaker up in the order, but then I love that book. That order will work as good as any. For what's left you're mostly connecting cosmere dots where you need both sides, so a lot won't come together until you read both sides of any given Easter egg.
