That's not true, specifically. Re-sealing is the only (known) form of Cosmere healing that is not Spiritual in nature at all. ReSealing more like magical surgery, its doing it at a physical manipulation level only and required intense anatomical knowledge to accomplish, but it cant heal cognitive or spiritual damage and it doesnt engage the spiritual/platonic Ideal. That's the whole reason they needed to bring MaiPon in on that thing with the emperor.

Which Compounding Twinborn would you LEAST like to be?
Quantus replied to Ninth of the Night's topic in Mistborn
The description we've been given is that it's a slider between Depression and Mania, which is definately niche but wildly helpful to anyone who struggles with either or both of of those. On the other hand I saw a pretty interesting theory that it's actually Storing specific "Intents" as if they were Connections, and that the Depression/Mania effect is just what happens when the Ferring isnt specific and just stored unFocused Intent. But otherwise I agree, it's really only useful to a specific subset of folks that want control over that specific think. Heat for example is only really an issue if you want to spend a lot of time outdoors in hostile climates. Breath is nice to be unstranglable I guess, and it would be a lot of fun to live underwater (or ignore all air polution), but for a normal lifestyle it's not that great. I generally put Wakefulness there too, though with Compounding you can actually stay awake forever, so that's roughly 1/3 more waking lifetime. -

Agreed, that's where it'll get weird and interesting. And the flip side is that this could threaten Savantism for both the Allomantic and the Feruchemcial abilities, but it hard to image what form of warping and consequence that might impose. -
Agreed, and I think it's also for the same reasons that having lots of Breaths Investing you will grant Immortality but not heal you, and even a Divine Breath wont unless maybe they can learn to back into it via control of their Shapeshifting?

H-Nicrosil is the one that interacts with general Investiture directly. F-Nicrosil stores the ability to Use a particular investiture (or granted abilities from them, in one WOB's wording? I think that implies the granted effects of Heightenings the the sensory stuff would be on the table) and the only two abilities you'd have to store are F-Nicrosil or A-Nicrosil. So (assuming Nicrosil compounding gives a multiplying effect) Compounding A-Nicrosil would give you a temporary equivalent of eating a whole Pile of Lerasium/Nicrosil Alloy, or the really the effect of tapping that one metal from the Bands: You'd become the most powerful Nicroburst in the world but you'd still only be abnormally Invested while actively Burning per the rules allomancy. Or you'd multiply the ability to use only Nicrosil for Feruchemy and I dont see what benefit that might have at all, though Im curious to hear ideas. -

Allomancy doesn't store any Investiture in the misting themselves so at most they'd only gain those additional benefits while actively burning. That path leads to Savantism fairly quickly. -

Hmmm, I think see two possible problems with that. If we assume Nicrosil mistings work more or less like Nicrosil Medallions, then they get Stored and Retrieved as a single whole (like memories in Copper) rather than Tapping to get some numeric boost. So Compounding may or may not magnify the Stored Power in any way. But assuming you can Compound it in some way to get a Power increase, what exacting is getting increased? The only Power you'd ever be able to Compound is the ability to Store Powers itself, and multiplying that offers no (obvious?) benefit. Even with a quantitative Compounding effect, Nicrosil is only useful in a world where Other powers are around to be gathered and stored. But without anything like that it's as useful as Duralumin-Gnat, technically a Power and an Investiture use, but without any actual benefit (beyond the ability to eat & destroy samples of a particular metal). -

I think what you are describing is Burning Investiture with the specific goal of developing Savantism, but per the retcon WOB that should always have a downside. -
Can you add a ring with the Herald's associated Virtues? They dont have overlap the way the Surges do but we might be able to find some level of thematic continuity between them and the shared surges.

Agreed, but Ill try one more time: 1000 years is barely anything in the timescale of Shards. I dont really know how to argue against your assertion that there are now negative consequences of Honor being shattered since those consequences seem to me to be the central theme of the whole series has been exploring, so I dont know how to make a better argument than the stories themselves. But regardless of what the predicted consequences may or may not be, an unattended Shard is very much a Random Variable that can develop into lots of different things. Even for a normal person not supernaturally warped into the Embodiment of Cultivation that could be worrisome and motivate them to take steps to reverse it before facing an incomprehensible and inhuman Shard-level spren, or a semi-sentient Power-monster, or a weaponized prize for the Ire some other power-hungry mortal to scoop up. For Cultivation, allowing such things to go wild and unattended may well be something she is no longer capable of allowing. Or she could be motivated by Altruism or Fear or Duty or sentimentality, or any combination thereof. -
Sure, a Mental Resilience Fabrial is probably possible in theory. It's probably too late for that alone to reverse the damage already sustained by the Heralds, but it might have let them last longer.

Shattering of Shards is reversable per WOB, no exception necessary. Unless you are saying Cultivation needs some specific motivation to deal with the mess right in front of her to explain why she doesnt set off on a crusade across the cosmere to repair all the Shattered Shards out there as well? For all we know that's exactly her plan, however we are given to understand that it would be catastrophic for her to attempt to take the Cultivation Shard itself away from Roshar (at least as damaging as it'd be for Odium to leave). She could not act unilaterally because she isnt all-powerful, and only recently did Odium break the stalemate and set all these new events in motion. And as far as Why would she do any of this, Again we cant guess all her motivations from two scenes, but Duty would explain it, as would Altruism, or Fear/Paranoia, or even just the accumulated Pressure of her Intent. The Intent had supposedly pushed Tanavast far enough to forget that people can Change (leading to the root flaw in the original Oathpact), Cultivation might literally be unable to stop herself from planning for and acting toward a specific desired Future. -

I cant really claim to know her motivations from the two scenes we've had, but the OG shards dont seem keen on leaving a Shard's power unheld for too long and risk it gaining sentience on it's own, even Rayse agreed if the Dor is any indication (though Im sure he had his own reasons too). I think she just plain wanted Rayse dead, personally, for killing her mate. Past that she could have lots of reasons for not wanting to leave Honor's future up to chance (anything from Futuresight warning her of a specific outcome to simple Sentimentality for her dead mate's final job/tasks/responsibilities to having respect for the Role of Roshar's God to a sense of Duty to the Goal of the Original Shattering (depending on what motivated it). I dont think she waited for a Desolation so much as she was waiting for the Destined Replacement Vessels to be born. Or really, she waited for her Moment to Kill Rayse and everything else is preparing for things After that prime goal. Also this is the first Desolation since they lost Honor, so it might have been her first practical opportunity to accomplish what she's after. And for the most Tinfoil Answer I can offer: Maybe she didnt actually wait. What if she's tried before, but last time it had unintentional consequences, as implied/foreshadowed in Hoid's Story of Queen Tsa when the Green celestial entity wanted to be mortal for a day but accidentally got stuck longer than she wanted and almost lost her place/power entirely. So this time around she's not trusting anyone and is instead taking her time to Grow/Cultivate her own surrogate/successor. I dont think that is true, actually. The Oathpact was established somewhere within the original lifetimes of the Heralds, which puts it after the Migration and the formation of the Fused from singer but within the original lifetimes of the Ten, who all (but Ash) are confirmed to have been born on Ashyn. Prior to that they had access to some unknown form of Ashyn Surgebinding (and specifically something analogous to a Bondsmith and Elsecalling for the actual Migration, per WOB) but the Rosharan/Radiant version emerged sometime after the Ten were empowered as Heralds with the Oathpact and given the Honorblades. -

Cultivation has made personal Visitations to three character and each of them have a specific conenction to one of the three Shards on Roshar. The Theory is that Todium was prepared to replace Rayse, Dalinar was prepared to Reform Honor (as Honor or as Unity) and that Lift is being prepared to take up Cultivation so that Koravari can retire. As to why anyone would want that, ee know it's considered dangerous to leave shards worth of Investiture alone too long so the OG shards would presumably want to keep them in Vessel Hands, and we know she was Mates with Tanavast so she'd expected to be together forever but may not want to keep holding the Office for a literal Eternity without him (especially with his Ghost hanging around). Retirement and a new pursuit makes a lot of sense for somebody in that place. Not repeat it, and not make the same mistakes, but make some new Oathpact to put limits back on Surgebinding seems very much something they'll want to consider. The Current Bargain addresses some of the restraining Odium aspects of the original Oathpact but that was not it's only effect. Right. Is that not the topic of this thread? -
You can technically grant a Kandra Powers with non-standard Blessings, so it theoretically should be possible to make a full Mistborn Kandra, though it would have become a lot harder in Era2 where there were no longer any naturally around to Spike, and Blessings are special in ways only Harmony knows. Given enough time a Kandra can technically digest enough matter to grow pretty big and at least attempt the form of things like Chasmfields, but they'd lack the Spren-based antigravity that makes them function at that size with normal Physics limitations. So they could process food into more Body Mass, but eventually they'll they get so big that they start crushing themselves like a beached whale.

Investiture on the logic that For Mr Earthling me would not have any other powers to Store so there wouldnt be much benefit for either version (the allomantic or the feruchemcial). If it were inside the Cosmere, Brass is probably the most disposable. -
They each win on their home turf, or at least Roshar wins on theirs. Non-specific Radiants can outlast anyone not a Fullborn/bloodmaker so long as they have access to plenty of Stormlight. Most mistings are way more limited but Scadrians dont care what planet they are on for any aspect of their power. For Rosharan forces to win on Scadrial they would need a Bondsmith or a way to fuel their Powers from the Mists or something. EDIT: I admire your optimism, but I know of no Power of God or Mankind that can end settle an internet "Who Would Win" debate once and for all.

Honor is reformed, Cultivation "retires". The Oathpact's successor enchantment is Forged. Several Big Twist reveals about the Migration generation and the events surrounding the dawn of the War, how the Singers agreed to be Fused and the Heralds were needed all in less than a generation, etc. -
I'm with you on that, though it would be an expensive way to go about it. Because Breaths are so malleable and ready to adopt the Identity of the target, I fully believe there exists a Command that you could use to add one breath units worth of Investiture to an existing metal mind. Somebody like Hoid might be able to swing Moving Memories directly from Breath storage to coppermind storage but it would be a more delicate thing since you need to preserve the specific encoding pattern.

Is this an error or am I simply not quite getting this?
Quantus replied to nightwriter's topic in Mistborn
I dont think so? In this context "Not Unless" = "Only If". So "Ill Die Next Time/ No you will not unless he has atium." works but your version adds one too many negatives. -
I guess I can see that, the idea that it's a more fundamental issue of the specific magic rather (kinda like the Self effect limitations of Breaths because Endowment. Or maybe it's the result of the basic Storage Command that's being used; if the Breath has no active effect Tuning it wouldnt have anything to Compound. Maybe, for example, if the Breaths were storing Memory when Burned, you'd get the same effect as if you'd Burned a filled Coppermind (whatever that might end up doing), instead of just returning the otherwise inactive investiture.

Pre Era of Solitude Histories
Quantus replied to Nightstar The Bright's topic in The Coppermind Wiki
Hmm, I dont know, that feels like saying American History begins at 1776, and that the colonial times that came before in those regions must be discussed as a separate thing. I think I'd arge that these pages are about the region, inclusive of the people, geography, culture, and Government structure. -
If you burn somebody else's Metalmind you get sick as if where an improper alloy, correct? I suspect burning metal that has been Invested (in any way) with somebody else's Identity is going to have a similar effect. I'm a little surprised by that 2nd WOB that says it would be returned with no effect, I would have thought you'd get some form of the same ReTuning of the Investiture that you get when you burn feruchemically Charged metals. Perhaps that would require a more specific Command when the Breaths were Invested in the metal?
