Oooh. Hmmm, Yank them out while being hit with a Regrowth Fabrial to restore the damaged spiritweb? Instead of the fabrial, perhaps get short-term a loan of Breaths to the 5th heightening, for much the same reason? Talk a depressed Returned into making their Final Sacrifice? What happens when the Alleyverse Era ends?

They can usually give it away voluntary. They can use it up. Depending on the type of Investiture it might just plain leak out (Stormlight innately tries to do this). They can "destroy" it's container, releasing it back to the spiritual realm (like if you eat something with breaths in it). Nightblood and Larkin can straight suck it out of you. Hemalurgy will destroy some in the initial process, and will leak out over time. There are several ways to turn matter into Investiture, so I have to think somewhere there is a conjurer magic that would let you create permanent objects from pure Investiture, but it's going to be a massive cost along the lines of us type to create tiny individual particles with massive colliders and whatnot via reletivity-level conversions.

I don't they were being hunted, mostly because they are still living right on top of Cultivation's Perpendicularity and being Id have thought "hunted" involve more running and hiding. Their origin story blames their own "belligerent" natures at the time rather than an outside force. Combine that with the fact that their language is directly rooted in the Dawnchants and shares grammar with both Shin and Singer languages, Id lean more toward the idea that theirs was something that happened prior to the racial falling out over the course of the desolation, likely closer to the original Ashyn migration when everyone was still friends. P.S. Interesting note: This WOB indicates that anyone with red Hair (and specifically Shallan) is at least distantly part Parshman, mostly by virtue of intermingling with the two main half-breed races (Horneater and Herdazian).

One of my favorite performances from Academy Award Winner Nicholas Cage (who must be addressed by his full title at all times!) I want a sequel in Spiderman Noir's world where

@Ookla, the Hivemind Nice! Thanks for that, the thread was before my time on the Shard. That makes sense, I knew he'd trained for the blades prior to being made Truthless though I didnt have the WOB that he was specifically well-respected prior to becoming Truthless. That's interesting in light of the fact that to Shin the warriors are considered the lowest calling/job (and are also traded among masters via a Stone like a Truthless is), being about destruction rather that Creation, and Szeth can read the "warriors script of [his] homeland". Id never stopped to consider the mechanism by which the Shin would be able to detect his loss of the blade. I can think of another way, tell me what you think: If the theory is correct that he'd bonded a Spren as a Radiant and was cast out for that (with that being why he is a "special Case" and was given the blade), then perhaps they Imprisoned his spren and are waiting for signs that he has died, thereby releasing his spren from the bond. For a people that seem to so revere Spren, it would make sense for them to consider Bonding one (and thus endangering it in all the ways the Stormfather objects to) to be a sacrilegious thing worthy of such a punishment.

Go for Reckoners if you have not already, it's another Sanderson series (completed trilogy plus a short at the 2.5 place of the timeline). It's YA but it's a fantastic story about what amounts to a superhero dystopia, and as fantastic as we've all come to love from Sanderson's works. Past that, you'd have to tell me what you most enjoyed about the various works, they're all different enough in genre and execution that it's hard to give meaningful. Im a huge fan of all three of Jim Butcher's series' (Dresden files the Urban Fantasy, Codex Alera the more traditional High Fantasy, and Ciderspires the Steampunky one with talking cats). Patrick Rothfuss is well worth the read. Multiple reads, actually, as you will catch a lot of cool details you cannot know are important the first time through. The Fionavar Tapestry has been my single favorite Fantasy trilogy since I was a kid, which is why nothing will ever actually be able to knock it off the top of my list even if objectively other things are better. The Sunrunners series by Melaine Rawn is stuck on my list for similar reasons, but admittedly I havent gone back to read it in probably two decades.

(Spoilers for mistborn/stormlight archive) an opinion fight.
Quantus replied to Chasmfiend#1's topic in Cosmere Discussion
They'd have as much chance as the average military trying to take down a mid-sized Kaiju, which is more or less what we'd be talking about. A few fistfuls of coins scattered about would go a long way to giving them some amount of air superiority (by height if not maneuverability), and they'd be too small and numerous for a chasmfiend to get rid of. If shardbows can do damage then Coinshots would still have a chance, especially with flairing and/or if any Inquisitor had the Crasher combo. And who knows, if one has feruchemical Fortune and maybe they'd just "get Lucky". The tactic would be basically the same that shardbearers use: distract and take the legs out one at a time. Eventually it would be rendered martially inert and they could go in for the kill at leisure. The downside is that they'd need to deal substantially more damage to each leg than the single shard cut that shardbearers get away with. It's worth noting that per WOB Roshar has substantially more free Investiture in general than Scadrial, which is on the low end of the spectrum since so much of both Shards was tied up in the actual Creation of the planet and people. And given that the Chasmfiends are a part of the natural Investiture ecosystem of the place and have Gemhearts (which are crystallizing chemically flawless gems via a Spiritual Realm connection) they might count as Invested enough to resist some of the external Metallic Arts innately. On the other hand, if they are susceptible to a Soother they might be able to calm it enough to get close for a surprise attack. Or even direct control if having a gemheart is similar to spikes for the purposes of Control (which is a long shot, methinks). Truth is, even with far less powerful Metallic Arts, the Era2 Scadrians would have a much better chance by virtue of firearms and explosives. -
The spren of the Singer Radiant doesnt reside in the Gemheart the way the Form-granting spren does. I assume this is the difference, since it's presumably not as deep a connection as a Nahel bond, and given that it doesnt reside in the gemheart (and ultimately couldnt and still manifest as a blade) I have to think that such a Radiant still requires the same spiritual cracks.

This is very likely the best Spiderman movie ever made. And I say that fully being more of a fan of than most of the ones that have come out over the years. Seriously, in terms of visuals, characterization, storytelling, etc. it's phenomenal. I truly do not have a single complaint about this flick. So, seriously: stop whatever you are doing and go see it right now. Unless somebody is about to die in the next two hours, you have nothing better to do.

Parshendi used shards historically. Does that seem odd to anyone else? I would have thought any parshendi in a spren-based form would hear the same screams.

[SPOILERS!] Mistborn: The Final Empire
Quantus replied to Snake Eyes Productions_YT's topic in Mistborn
Clubs, purely because of the wooden disk bit (though it happened in a later book). Also, Spook even if he's not necessarily a full member. -
I like all the POV Radiants for different reasons (though admittedly it took me a while to come around to Shallan). I grove very strongly on redemption stories, which is why Im a huge fan of both Dalinar and Kaladin. Jasnah is a gloriously analytical and self-aware, and Lift is just plain distilled awesome (You have to like anyone that is so Immune to social convention and/or propriety). Im convinced Navani will be one soon, and I gotta love the fellow Engineer. Shallan bothered me the first time through, but on the reread (and thus knowing her spoilers) I can understand and relate to her better this time through. Im listening to the Graphic audio, though, and she has the same voice-actor as Siri in Warbreaker, which may have helped. I am wildly interested in Nale, as the only Herald Radiant, and I really like him for the fact that he is self-aware enough to be doubting himself; Im really interested in how his story will play out. Similarly, Venli's whole progression in OB and the unique possibilities of a Singer Radiant are intriguing. Not a fan of Malata so far, but I dont know enough about her and her motivations to really form an opinion. Would have like to see Tien come into his power, I cannot for the life of me figure out what his emotional crack was, aside from maybe some mild ADD I dont really see any of the mental conditions the others seem to have. Gun to my head, though:
-
That's true, good point. Though there are a number of peoples and religions that name things "gods" without actually being a fan of them. The Singers re. Odium comes to mind, so there may be respect without actually being fans. Part of what really confuses me is the fact that they actively train to use the Honorblades, send Truthless out into the world with one, while being apparently (per that Shin trader in WotK) very hopeful they'll not have another Truthless any time soon. I cant figure out their view on and/or role with the Honorblades. If they considered themselves Keepers of the Blades for the Heralds, I wouldnt have expected them to send one out into the world with somebody they believe will be lucky if he's allowed to be tortured in the Afterlife (per Szeth), though as I type that I realized that's a reasonable description of the role of the Heralds themselves. If they were expected to keep the blades away from the heralds (perhaps they know of the madness, or of the true circumstances behind them abandoning Taln and the Oathpact) I also wouldnt expect them to send them out into the world, and Nale in particular would be the Herald that managed to steal his back. I have basically all questions, no real answers, which is what's nagging me.

That's the critical part, I think. We have the example in Harmony of two shards intermingling, but even in the intermingled state the element of Opposing Forces has not gone away (most directly exemplified in the volatile nature of Harmonium). On the other end of the spectrum we have Autonomy that by all indications is splitting up and/r sharing the shard among multiple vessels/Avatars, and I suspect that doing it that way allows more of the total shard to be utilized than is possible for any single Vessel, by sharing/distributing the Cognitive load. To create a literal 17th shard, I think it would require a massive act of Destruction, as in destroying one or more entire star systems, or something else representing an equal amount of Adonalsium's Investiture that had been committed to some physical Creation pre-shattering. And even that assumes that things Created by Adonalsium were not then reassigned to a shard the way the rest of the Investiture was, which is an assumption Im not yet willing to commit to. It might also stand to reason that what I described would not work because the act of Destruction itself would assign the "freed up" investiture to Ruin.

The Skybreakers revere and obey the local laws, as part of their devotion; even Nale will stop his hunt for a Radiant if the local Laws dictate otherwise. However, they take it upon themselves to instantly Pardon anyone who joins them and swears the 1st Ideal. Do they actually have that Authority, legally speaking? They definitely have agreements with some localities, as evidenced by the prison-break test and the warrants they'd obtained. I could see them interpreting Nale's Authority as a Herald to work in the Vorin Kingdoms where there doesnt seem to be a strong separation of Church and State. They even pardoned a Shin Truthless, which in particular seemed a bit of an extreme move, though in reality I have no idea how the Shin view the Heralds or the Skybreakers, though by Szeth's hinted backstory it seems they are not at all fans of Radiants. Thoughts?

Bunch of random questions/theories about the Cosmere
Quantus replied to MrPotato's question in Cosmere Q&A
Regarding Aluminum, I strongly suspect it does have some connection to Adonalsium, but I dont think it can be a literal Godmetal, on the logic that Godmetals are pure, dense, crystallized Investiture, and I dont think that Ati and Leras would have been able to Create Scadrial whole as they did with such a large supply of any godmetal. That being said, in creating Scadrial they created the Metallic arts and by extension the only known way to Invest Aluminum directly, so there were already some amount of shenanigans afoot regarding aluminum. -
That would make a certain amount of sense in light of the fact that Inquisitors are typically the only one of the hemalurgical constructs that are so frayed they require a central spike just to hold them together. At that point they might be drifting in the general direction of other Cosmere constructs like the Returned that are basically souls staple;ed back onto the body. They wouldnt necessarily get the innate immortality that the heightening and/or divine Breath offer, but there existence is more directly a result of active Investiture effects, and skewing their lifespan wouldnt be an unreasonable side effect to my mind.

Can you store attributes you gain from allomancy
Quantus replied to Ain'tNoOneWhatKnowTheCow's topic in Mistborn
There are two separate things: 1) Via the Compounding Hack you can burn a filled metalmind and get a burst of the Feruchemical trait fueled by the Allomantic burn of the metal, wildly increasing the available stored Trait, but this is a "hack" of the two systems and you need to have access to both the Feruchemical and Allomantic version of the same metal. This is what Miles did, though it doesnt necessarily have use in every metals case. 2) Separately, you can store certain abnormal things in metalminds in certain circumstances. For example, you can store all kinds of senses in Tin metalminds, even the Life Sense from Breaths or allomantic Bronze. I would imagine burning Pewter while storing some of the others like heat or health or nutrition would likely mitigate the downsides of storing. Would probably work with double Pewter but at that point the full compounding Hack would be more efficient in most if not all ways. -
You are definitely right about that (Atium is a fortune effect per WOB) and in general the Spiritual Realm seems to be the key to anything approaching precognition or Time-Travel-esk insight (though real Time Travel is not going to appear in the Cosmere). I suspect/assume the fact that it's a voidbinding effect on Roshar has a lot to do with why they consider any predictive activities to be taboo to the point they even are wary of meteorology.
-
I always liked the sounds of Double Tin, on the logic that both augment Senses but in very distinct ways, and being able to Fill Senses individually would be a great way to mitigate the drawbacks of Allomantic Tin. And if also we're talking crossover abilities, Alleyverse, etc, I would want at least the 3rd Heightening on top of that.

The tops of the plateaus are more or less the same elevation, more like the Mesa regions of the American Southwest, a relatively level Plain with chasms and canyons carved into it. The bridges were built wildly different depending on the Highprince, it was one of the main points of contention between Dalinar and Sadeus. The Bridge 4 bridges were built with relatively light wood and stripped of all extraneous components (like shields or any form of fortification). They were run to the edge, then dropped and pushed forward out over the plateau, ideally with the bridge being twice as long as the span to be crossed. Dalinar's were significantly heavier (and slower) and were drawn by chulls; they're described as being "built like siege towers, with enormous wheels and armored sections where soldiers could push. At a Chasm they unhooked the chulls, pushed the machine forward by hand, and ratcheted a crank to lower the bridge. Once the bridge was set down, the machinery was unlocked and pulled across. The bridge was built so they could lock the machine onto the other side pull the bridge up, then turn and hook the chulls up again" (TWoK, Ch 26). As far as how many it would take, they said they manned them with 35-40 but it took a minimum of ~25 to carry, and occasionally soldiers had to pitch in to get them back after heavy losses. As far as what a coordinated and determined group of people can lift by hand, Ye Internets recently showed me this video of ~80 Amish folks moving a reasonable sized house by hand. Because Human Determination...

Aggreed, and a further bit to add is that I think this ability is likely the reason Lightweavers were historically said to "provided spiritual sustenance even for the other orders." This was a defining trait of Tien, and is evident in the way Shallan's drawing of a person has a tendency to help them better understand and/or redefine their own personal self-image. I'd been attributing it more to an alternate use of Soulcasting, both in the trans-realmic quality and in the way Soulcasting is all about convincing something, or in this case someone, to redefine their own self-definition. But @Calderis point about Lightweaving and Truthwatchers makes a lot of sense, especially in light of how the "inverted" Illumination Surge in Voidbinding seems to have been redirected to look into the Future.

Do hemalurgic spikes interfere with southern-scadrian medallions?
Quantus replied to Krios's question in Cosmere Q&A
Nope, to the best of my understanding they shouldnt interfere, they are operating on different mechanism in that the medallions dont actually make any real/permanent alterations to the user's spiritweb, which by extension means the web is not being damaged enough to give a Shard the same backdoor access that spikes do. That being said, we're pretty sure that hemalurgy is involved in the creation of medallions, and at least one fairly detailed theory by @Calderis speculates that the reason medallions (other than the Bands which are weird) have a limit on the the number of powers they can combine is for similar reasons, but the mechanism involved is a more of a Connection Interference issue rather than the Spiritweb Crack/Decoherence problems you have with with actual spikes. -
It's my understanding that you have to be Invested (as in the Lightkeeper's use of the term, not the Innate investiture of all living things) to actually use a shardpool to transition realms. I dont have the exact quote, but somewhere it was mentioned that one of the reasons that Worldhoppers are relatively hard to kill is that by virtue of being able to use a perpendicularity to Worldhop they can flee in a way almost nobody can follow.
-
Awakening all but has to have a mechanism for worldhopping, given that both Vivenna and earlier the Five Scholars made it off-world. Whether it requires the Shardworld perpendicularity or can accomplish it on it's own like the Surges can, I cant say one way or the other. Now, if you are talking a Type IV Awakening I think you could do it and would have made what amounts to a sentient Transportation Fabrial, though I assume you'd still need to feed it Investiture to function.
