  1. Sounds a lot like Savantism, Im curious to what extent the mechanism are similar or different (aside from the fact that Resonance is the interaction of two powers, specifically, rather than just the overuse of one). For that matter, by that WOB it sounds like Resonances will develop between Allomantic and Feruchemical abilities, but specifically not between the various Allomancy abilities, even with a full Mistborn. That might imply that Resonances will only form when the Investiture of two different shards is involved, as is the case with Feruchemy and the Surges, but not Allomancy.
  2. Excellent point. The only difference I can think of is that in the case of Forgery the aluminum is the Target of the Aon's effect, rather than being sort of tangent to the energy flows, being the physical material where just the shape is important. In Forgery, could you make a functional soulstamp out of Aluminum? Does the soulstamp (object) itself need to hold an Investiture charge, or could it still be used to apply a soulstamp?
  3. That was the general idea. Though as an extension, would they be able to anticipate it? Atium cannot anticipate an Aluminum bullet, Id like to think that might extend to the Aon scribed into it, but that feels like having it both ways.
  4. Aluminum body-suit, with Scadiral Medallions for basic Life Support.
  5. I honestly dont know about aluminum and Dor, so Ive asked that question separately so as not to derail this too much. Technically All but the metallic arts, so it's not 100% incompatible with Investiture. Dor Aons are pure Cognitive constructs that are, uniquely, sourced in the Cognitive realm (bypassing the than the Spiritual entirely), I wonder if that is enough difference to side-step Aluminum's Investiture-sink properties (especially if they are a Spiritual Realm thing).
  6. This came up while talking ways to kill Fullborn An Elatrian can create aons with physical materials like stone and wire, could they use one scribed onto Aluminum, and if so would it function any differently? Technically it is immune to Investiture from all but specific bits of the Metallic Arts, so it's not 100% incompatible with Investiture. Dor Aons are pure Cognitive constructs and are, uniquely, sourced in the Cognitive realm (bypassing the than the Spiritual entirely), I wonder if that is enough difference to side-step Aluminum's Investiture-sink properties (especially if they are a Spiritual Realm thing).
  7. True, though I'd think that just means that you'd need some element of Surprise, which is always going to be the case; the actual method of destruction is still viable. So lets talk Dor Traps: Scribe the Aon onto a piece of Aluminum and thus set a trap they cannot detect?
  8. For what it;'s worth a Larkin can also do that. And since they are called "Dragon Bugs" I suspect dragons can as well.
  9. Agreed that gross dismemberment would likely do it, though a big part of that is the fact that it would by it's nature be separating the Compounder from their Metalminds. But if there remained a single gold metalmind with enough stored health to fully rebuild a body, they'd likely still be able to come back from even tiny fragments of the body, like a starfish or Shardplate. The question we wont be able to answer without experimentation is whether an actively Compounding Fullborn would be Invested enough to resist the Aon Daa attack
  10. As a general statement, there are some Shard theories (such as the Quadrant theory that I love to advocate whenever possible) that do call for a "Survival Shard" as one of the 16, but specifically not the "Shard that Wants to Survive" (which in that theory is more likely the Knowledge/Wisdom shard (on the theory that it's know so much about whats actually going on across the cosmere that it's making the Smart Move and hiding). I agree completely at Now=Era1, I probably should agree but secretly dont want to at Now=Era2. Is there any evidence yet either way in Era 2 given the other shenanigans? If we're right about Trell's identity, there might be a Local that is waking up as an avatar, if not full shard.
  11. Crem seems to be the trick, it solidifies all the broken bits back together in irregular lumps and whatnot, even leaks under doorways and needs to be chipped up after a single storm. Per WOB there are no Plate tectonics but it is still moving, thus eroding and being rebuilt on the other side. Separately and complicating the matter is the fact that the shape of the Continent is a Fractal, specifically a 4D Julia-Set Quaternion fractal, (See animated video here), Supposedly the fractal shape is going to be maintained so I suspect the shape of the continent is going to continue to mirror that fractal mathematical shape-change-over-time function, as seen in that animation. The soil of Shinovar was, by best guess, Created by the Shards to maintain a more earthlike ecosystem just there. Welcome to the Shard! Dont trust cookies from Strangers.
  12. I think Edgli's meddling takes the form of her choosing people to become Returned based on a specific intended Hoped for outcome, with the sort of foresight you'd need to be a Shard to arrange. In the case of the Five Scholars I think she was specifically hoping for them to world-hop to Roshar and then try to mimic the shardblades to create the Chekhov's Godkiller. As an even less supported Idea, I think the theme of Five Ideals combined with the fact that Honor and Cultivation werent behind the emergence of the Radiants (and the Watsonian fact that Warbreaker was conceived as a Stormlight prequel), all make me thing Edgli's meddling was behind it as well. I think she uses her Spiritual knowledge sort of Aim's her chosen at different goals, but consistent with "Endowment" she is giving them the tools and then letting them succeed or fail on their own (as their free will theoretically dictates), as opposed to actively meddling throughout. Here's WOB that Edgli has hopes but not specific tasks for the Returned, and is herself very erratic. This new WOB makes me think it's crazy power is coming from Ruin, which while not a counter-argument, would make it a bit more of a tangle being both Ruin and also some secret bit of Edgli separate from the initial Breaths. Also, had she purged herself of her own evil/darkness, I'd have kinda expected her letter to be less...cold?
  13. Greetings! As a random start: Name a fictional weapon you'd rather have than a Faithsaber. I cant really think of any, other than one from my childhood: Woundhealer, the Sword of Mercy from Fred Saberhagen's Books of Swords series. A sword that heals flesh instead of cutting, but is otherwise the a supersharp, indestructible Damascus long-sword, part of a set forged by the gods that they later killed.
  14. Wow, over a decade as a professional controls engineer and I've never had a real need to dust off my old Dynamics and Diff-EQ books, but Allomancy does it? I f-ing LOVE this place! Can you add the physics/behavioral assumptions to the write-up, for those of us that havent reread Era1 in a while? I want to go through it with Wax's Crasher trick in mind. I vaguely recall some less than intuitive workings surrounding the Conservations before/during/after Impact events, and Ive never really tried to wrap my head around them in Higgs terms.
  15. Id say start with the Coppermind link at the top, it's the wiki collection for the Cosmere. After that Arcanum is the Word Of Brandon collection, which has tons of really interesting information about the inner workings of the Cosmere and the ways all the different stories and systems interact, compiled from various Interviews, Q&A sessions, etc. If you are looking for an entry point on either of those, "Hoid" is a great keyword to start delving the mysteries. Be warned, it's right up there with TVTropes.com for its ability to just blink away hours of time without you noticing.
  16. What's coming out? ALL THE MOVIES: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_in_film#2019_films Avengers: ENDGAME Captain Marvel Water-Boy2: The Aqua-Man Shazam Spiderman2 (#3) Hellboy Glass Dark Phoenix Joker Godzilla: King of Monsters How to train your Dragon 3 John Wick 3 Lion King Aladdin Dumbo Star Wars Ep IX Toy Story 4 New Mutants IT 2 Pet Cemetery (Untitled Terminator Movie) Men In Black (reboot/remake/sequel?) Chaos Walking Artemis Fowl Zombieland2 Adams Family (remake) Sonic the Hedgehog (!?!) Charlies Angels (Dont hate, it has Patrick Stewart in it. Oh wait, it also has Kristen Stewart...) The Kid who would be King (Has Patrick Stewart as Merlin, so I guess I have to...) Captive State Gemini Man damnation, if i didnt know better Id think 2019 was the Year of the Mouse
  17. Adding to what @Ookla the Mind Sculptor said, from the scene with Dalinar repairing stone, they definately have their own opinion of themselves, something that changes over time, such that there's a window where the chunks still remember being one piece.
  18. Interesting thought. I think it would know what at it's time of physical creation, before the time bubble experiment was brought into play. Even while mundane it would have enough of a cognitive and spiritual aspect to be repaired by surges, and I would think (based on nothing in particular) that any act of conscious Creation/Crafting is going to imprint some amount of Intent/Identity/purpose. If that didnt do it, a group outpouring if Investiture targeted at it would, I think, force some bit of their opinion/definition onto the object along with their Investiture (assuming there isnt some way to scrub that from investiture the way you can with personal Identity). Everything needs a spiritual and Cognitive aspect, I dont think anything can exist without thinking itself is something. Closest I come up with is if the sword/focal object is a other shape/object that could be used as a weapon. So if it thought is was say just a large shard of obsidian, but would consider itself a weapon until used that way; put another way, a naturally sharp stick (or coincidentally sharp curtain-rod) isnt going to become a spear until it stabs somebody.
  19. Greetings, fellow Dresenphile! Quantus is what Ive used since my AIM/ICQ days in highschool (~Y2K) is a bastardization of Quantum Traveler, which was in turn a really obscure Star Trek TNG reference (the guy that taught Wesley that Space, Time, and Thought were all the same thing, and who eventually unlocked his superpowers). I was also Quantus on the JimButcher forums, did you ever haunt there? PS. The Cookie is a lie. Today is National Cookie Day. On this day, or any other day, NEVER accept cookies from strangers...
  20. Agreed, though the fact that the waters have a mechanism to withdrawl just before the highstorm hits makes me think it already has some deliberate Setup in it's design. You could do that with pure air pressure, but the inner flows inside the rock to pull it off would be too specific to be natural, especially if they do it without harming the fish-life. Not all geologic change happens that slow, even without a catalyst as powerful as the Highstorm. The Great Lakes of the American Midwest were carved out ~20,000 years ago, and that's with a Glacially slow drive mechanism, as compared to the Highstorm-driven Crem cycle. Hell, they farm the crem into shapes, but what would take thousands of years in a dripping earth cavern, while there it can happens in a matter of years to the point where they mold the landscape that way. I strongly suspect otherwise, but only because the Fractal nature of it's current shape implies makes me want to believe unusual if not actively supernatural mechanisms influencing its evolving shape.
  21. damnation, I was taking him at the "Dwarf Galaxy" size descritpion, but you are right I see where he reduced that further to ~100 stars as a "cluster". Granted, ~100 stars is likely what most of the US can see on the average night, with the current state of light pollution. Could be that the in-world cultures are just used to less visible star than an earth contemporary culture? Reasonable inference except that we have a specific WOB that the Cosmere is finite, no?
  22. I wonder about that: given how much personal Identity and Intent impact the manifestation of such things, especially when it happens naturally. I mean, sword is fundamentally, conceptually a weapon. I mean, a TypeIV could be just about anything based on the Command (overpowering any innate definitions). But a naturally emergent Sapience would be, I think, something of a slave to the core concept of whatever it actually is. A naturally emergence sapience (or a forced but unguided one) that was a Pacifist sword would be as impossible as a placid&timid Stormfather; you couldnt be the embodiment of the Storm while manifesting it's opposite traits. And as I write that, I feel it has implications on the heralds...
  23. My understanding was that with In-world usage they had no concept of a distinction between Cosmere and Universe. The questions in my mind are not whether or not the Spiritual Realm is location restricted (agreed it is not) but rather the more fundamental "Is Cosmere<Universe?", If So, is there any Spiritual Barrier that is actively separating the Cosmere's Investiture from whatever may be outside (not a Location restriction, more a Connection one). I figure that if there exists Zero Connection between anything inside the Cosmere and Outside (and Im pretty confident in that assumption), then for all practical purposes they would have entirely separate Spiritual Realms, since what passes for geography there has no link or interaction between the two.
  24. Jeez, until this thread, I was apparently under the impression Shinovar was an Island like Amia... So, the Rosharan Continent's current shape is a slice of a 4D Julia set Fractal, implying that both its shape and its changes of shape over time are theoretically following a predetermined mathematical Pattern. So assuming the planet doesnt go entirely to pot, I think it likely that it's movements/shape will continue to mirror that fractal set. Here's a pretty cool animation of what that change will look like Related Question: If the continent is not drifting so much as being worn down and rebuilt, will the Purelake and/or Cultivation's' Perpendicularity move as well, or will it eventually be a coastal feature?
