  1. Now Im curious. Turns out "Spook" is a borrowed dutch word that literally means "Ghost". It became a verb as a secondary usage for Fear, typically in the context of something that makes you "frightened or unnerved", though in usage it's either something that is vaguely unnerving (like a spooky house or forest) or it's more like startled (ie "the horse got spooked by the sudden noise"). In North America it also became synonymous with shadowy Men In Black style spies or government agents, because they are ghost-like in the sense of how they dont officially exist, can figuratively walk through walls, etc. (not sure how broadly that usage has made it to the rest of the world, sounds to me like a US Cold-war era evolution). Middle of the 20th century in the US it was also a derogatory term for somebody with African ancestry, though I doubt that last one would ever be particularly relevant to any Cosmere usage.
  2. Kaladin trying to tell a joke. It's like a dog trying to play the piano
  3. Wax's was originally stated to be an example of Savantism, but Brandon backtracked on that because he said Savantism is specifically supposed to have a downside. I could be entirely wrong I thought it was now just being called learn-able skill. I have a guess on Wayne's: But that is a bit more of a literal combination of the two abilities, and the two actual Resonance examples we have (Lightweaver's memory and Windrunner's Squires) are a good deal more abstract than that, so Im probably way off base.
  4. Id argue that the Desire you speak of is specifically trying to achieve something that is not currently a reality. It's perpetually more, it's the next goal, the next achievement and Increase of Self; it reaches a state of satisfaction. Ambition requires Change, because it is fundamentally a dissatisfaction with the whatever the current state is. At least as compared to other shards like Devotion or Dominion (or arguably Honor) that are theoretically achievable states.
  5. I agree with this entirely. While I could easily see Windrunners doing Spiritual Adhesion too, I think I prefer the literary possibilities of having the Orders each having different expressions and subtle differences in how they leverage each surge. Having the BondSmiths uniquely being able to Forge those Spiritual Connections, and in general having some surges express themselves along different Realmic Lines adds a lot of fun variation.
  6. I never really liked/got Leras's Light on the floor explanation. I tend to think of it in a more computer model: The Spiritual Realm (and/or Spiritweb) is a frequency vibration-based computer made out of Investiture harp-strings (ie Connections), the Cognitive is the energy/machine level it is operating on, and the Physical Realm is the Software Program it's running.
  7. For what it's worth, Time does exist in the Spiritual Realm, it's just easier to view as a whole. But the ever-moving horizon of the Now has significance, insofar as how it interacts with the other two Realms, it's the point where possibility solidified into reality. It's why actual Time Travel is impossible in the Cosmere even for the Shards that exist mostly in the Spiritual. That's where I think the Temporal shards come into play, there are a few who's Intents (Preservation, Cultivation, Ambition, arguably Ruin) are fundamentally defined by Temporal Change. Ambition is by definition a desire for Change, Preservation is a resistance to it, Cultivation is all about the Before&After, etc. You can have Honor or Devotion as a static thing, but those others just cannot exist without a temporal component.
  8. The Dor, having been left alone too long, gaining sentience with no mortal persona to contain it and give it context.
  9. Adonalsuim's second wife, whom Hoid dated back in high school. (Not really, it's definitely Cultivation)
  10. Ooh, good point. So if we assume that 4 of 10 surges is too much (not unreasonable), Im curious what would happen if the two orders shared a surge. Might they get a resonance between the three? Might there be something akin to a Resonance effect from having two different versions of the same Surge, in the example of a Windrunner/Bondsmith that both get Adhesion but apparently will sometimes use it in different ways. I could see Spiritual Adhesion giving the WindSmith more conscious control over their Squire Connections, for example. Next to Bondsmiths with their unique spren, I think the next most likely to e open to it is (by a wide margin) the Lightweavers. Speaking Personal Truths makes the incompatibility with another Order's Oaths almost a non-issue, and if Pattern is any indication they are very willing to try new things purely for the value of the Experiment.
  11. The Heart of the Revel, at least, is also stirring emotions. But I was thinking more of the fact that Rayse defines himself as "Passion" rather than Odium, which would make him the OG Rioter, but not at all Soothing. As far as Cultivations's forest, I was thinking of that as more just part of the influence of the Spren in the area causing things to rustle and grow erratically, the same way Wyndle moves about by growing temporary Vines.
  12. If you'r looking purely at effects, I think I'd call Preservation Gold, since allomantically it's focused on the Past, and feruchemcially it basically restores the Physical to match the Spiritual Truth. I might put Ambition on Bendalloy, since Ambition is pretty fundamental about a Better (personal) Future; Cultivation fits ok for the same reason, thought electrum would work for her too. Based on his own self-definition in Stormlight, I'd call Odium Zinc before Brass.
  13. Given that each of the three seem to have wildly different Typologies, Im not sure it's a question that can really be Answered. A Line going through a Circle is both Parallel and Perpendicular to it, depending on your frame of reference. The Cognitive Realm is stretched and flat even when the Planet it reflects is spherical, and "all places are one" in the Spiritual. You could call them Perpendicular to each other, or go with the more traditional Parallel Worlds, or as wildly different Planes of existence (which I always sort of think as Parallel too), or mixed together and overlaid on top of each other.
  14. I think a more interesting question at this point would be what are the potential Consequences of a single person being Bonded to Multiple Spren. The Nahel Bond has been described several times as a literal blending of Spiritwebs, it has implications on both Parties. So what happens if there are three being blended? Would the Spren start to change, becoming more like each other? Would new Resonances being to appear? If it were specifically a Bondsmith Godspren and a more normal-tier spren, would the lesser ranked spren get a Power boost? Would the Godspren object to the other spren forming a Blade? Do they get two sets of Plate, or one Super-mech Voltron set?
  15. What he said was this, and I think he was referring specifically to the theory that @RShara mentioned about the "Destroy Evil" Command provdiving a Connection to Ruin, specifically.
  16. Im going to go ahead and chime in with my favorite theory here (ignore me if you've heard it). The WOB that @Elegy posted is actually what I consider one of the stronger supports for it. The theory is that all the 16 shards can be mapped to a 4x4 chart just like the allomantic metals, with similar Quadrants (which I defined as sort of a combination of the Allomantic and Feruchemical charts). So there are four quadrants: Physical, Cognitive, Spiritual, and Temporal. Each quadrant can be further subdivided along axis of Inward/Outward and Increase/Decrease, more or less like the Push/Pull, Internal/External subdivisions of the Metallic Arts. What it means is that each shard has an underlying definition based on those three pieces of information, and the rest is all the Vessel's interpretation of the leaning imparted by the shard. So Ruin is (by my best guess) The Outward Decreasing Physical who wants Everything Else to Stop Existing Physically; Preservation by comparison is the is the Outward Decreasing Temporal who wants Everything Else to stop Changing. This also works with the Stormlight theory about Unity, on the logic that Unity and Honor have the same Core (Increase You Own Spiritual Connections) and the difference is between Tanavast's one-on-one Oaths focus while Dalinar is taking a much more group/Community outlook. This room for vessel interpretation is why the Shards don't innately all have 1-to-1 paired Opposites, because you can flip each of them across multiple axis, and the subtleties of their vessel interpretation is where they become compatible or not. So if you assume all that Tinfoil is more or less accurate, you can map the Allomantic Metals to various shards. It may not have any actual relevance in-world, and your pairings are only as good as you guess on where the Shards should fall on the chart, with a lot different assignments that seem logical. Mine fall out this way: Ruin = Outward Decreasing Physical = Iron Autonomy = Inward Decreasing Cognitive = Copper Dominion = Outward Decreasing Cognitive = Brass Endowment = Outward Increasing Cognitive = Zinc Devotion = Outward Increasing Spiritual = Nicrosil Honor = Inward Increasing Spiritual = Duralumin Odium = Outward Decreasing Spiritual = Chromium Ambition = Inward Increasing Temporal = Electrum Cultivation = Outward Increasing Temporal = Bendalloy Preservation = Outward Decreasing Temporal = Cadmium (Id give a link to my original Reddit post, but reddit appears to be down for the moment).
  17. Dalinar yes, Galivar maybe, Elokhar no. For Dalinar it's a waste of time and effort better spent elsewhere, but for nearly anyone else that is high enough up on the social food chain to actually wear Plate, it's likely to be a trivial expense at best (and a menial task they expect servants to keep up with). It entirely depends on their opinions of the value of Fashion, and as one example we've all met Adolin...
  18. "Expense with no Benefit"...Sounds like the Lighteyes' style to me
  19. It would have implications on those borrowing plate, like the King's Blades and Plate that get loaned out for duels. The plate readjusts itself to fit whomever is wearing it, and a lot of paints would start to crack and flake off under that kind of strain.
  20. So I was and so you were. Oops.
  21. Your probably right, but on the flip side Roshar has way more abundant Investiture than Scadrial, so the Radiant's are likely to be able to pull off things that would take Shardic intervention on Scadrial. Elscalling is one example, some radiant's can just Do It, but on Scadrial it takes an actual Shardpool. Theoretically a Bondsmith has managed a permanent Spiritual change to most of an entire sentient Race, which would take a shard on Scadrial (and specifically one of the Shards that were already heavily Invested by creating those races)
  22. For the most part I doubt it. The increased mass is described as some sort of higgs' boson quantum hoodoo, but so far has always shown him retaining the ability to move and survive the increased mass (as opposed to being crushed under his own body weight like a beached whale). That being said, they could very well get bogged down in sand or water, and eventually reach a point where every step breaks the ground and it's like walking on eggshells. As far as combo's with a potential downside, I could really see somebody blasting Electum Determination to the point where it became a drug with a wicked depression hangover. Ditto Mental Speed and Wakefulness. I have no idea what it would look/feel like to walk around as your actual TrueSelf (ie superblasting Identity) and then coming down from it, but it sounds like it might leave you feeling a bit Lost. I could see somebody overusing Bendalloy might eventually loose the ability (or at least appetite) for normal food & water
  23. Tin is problematic to overuse and stop when it's purely the allomantic version of sensory increase, I would not be surprised if there was a similar situation when over-using the feruchemical version (even if feruchemical effects don't lead to savantism).
  24. Perpendicularities are locations where the three Realms get pinched down and/or squished together enough that the boundaries blur and things can pass between them. Massive concentrations of Investiture are one way (likely the most common way, a possibly the only "naturally occurring" way) for that to happen, acting sort of like a realmic gravity well. But are not the only method to create them since a Radiant's Elsecalling surge is also creating a small perpendicularity using normal quantities of stormlight. Makes as much sense as anything. Though now that we have WOB confirmation that Nightblood has a whole bunch of Ruin in him, it may not be necessary.
