Essentially, this is physics/metaphysics interaction Remember, in vacuum, small splashes of mass and energy always appear and disappear, and, for example, stretching quark-quark pair results in the another quark pair being pulled from vacuum, since it is more thermodynamically favorable than increasing distance between them. Feruchemical gold alters the system in such a way that pulling mass from vacuum becomes favorable, with the equilibrium being "healthy human being". The more Feruchemical gold you tap, the faster relaxation towards that equilibrium. It is no more surprising than our universe pulling vacuum (which has nonzero energy and mass per unit of volume) out of nowhere at all as it expands (as per some current theories. Nobody knows for certain what happens to the universe yet.)

I think a good idea would be for original PAFO receiver to PM Peter once, then, if no answer is forthcoming, ask about at another opportunity - preferably Peter directly. Just IMO, of course.

Done and done - I am watching, and I have sent the email So far, nothing applicable to a ebook user in Japan

I think "fear" in this case is like "doesn't see Steelheart as a threat to himself" - which most Epics would, to some degree (see:paranoia), while Steelheart himself never considered suicide
-
Well, I based that bit on this quote: The whole team used tensors, and Conflux powered the whole city, so the effect would be minimal. Diggers may have gone mad for any other reason.

Put them in a cat, breed that cat, rinse and repeat with kittens until you create a race of sentient cat-people with full power set, and then put spikes in one of those? That would be one powerful cat, yes it would And yes, one would probably get stronger than Lerasium mistborn by adding spikes It might be possible that enough spike would reduce fuel requirements (metal) to nothing or nearly so, or have duralumin-level power without duralumin. Whether the body would stand s¥that for long is another question entirely.

I think it mentioned mitochondrial change and then rapid decay, rather than just quick death. What else you have missed... The power given by Calamity turns Epics evil/immoral. Epics that can give the power away may or may not be immoral while the power is bestowed on humans. Giving it to the same human appears to warp psyche of that human. This may imply that Calamity is, in some way, sentient, and imposes its worldview on Epics.

Being a. From another country b. In yet another country c. Without friends that share my interest in fantasy literature (in *any* country) (mostly) d. a Ebook user (got Steelheart just a minute after midnight in Pacific Standard) I find myself unable to participate in Steelhunt, which is mildly aggravating. While posting in the thread is obviously against the rules (the posts are publicly visible), I think that some system of distributing the codes over PMs would be nice, be it just "receiver sends 3 PMs to random members" or something like contests/rolls or whatnot.

What format do you enjoy the best for Brandon's books?
Satsuoni replied to Mikanium's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Ebook, mainly because it is easier to get from another country. I would read them in any form, though Audiobook, however, takes too much time, and in general, spoken English is harder for me to grasp than written. -
Well, I would probably set myself up for life, all careful-like, and then... Even basic Allomancy like steel/iron is quite powerful in our metal-filled world. With power like TLR's, it should be possible to open tumbler locks (and many other kinds thereof) with ease, arrange suicides with Emotional allomancy, etc... I would probably meddle Assassinate "important" political figures and see what happens, etc... And of course, I would search for the source of my powers and a key to worldhopping In other words, I would have fun Edit: Epic fun

Shard would recover energy in the same way it recovers allomantic energy (note that since metal eventually returns to planet, there is energy gain). How exactly? Well, I am not sure, and I am relatively sure Brandon does not know. I have some thoughts on that in my old thermodynamics thread (in my sig), which boil down to the idea of entropy being different in Cosmere - possibly defined with taking into account Shardic intent and current mental state, possibly with the 3-realm interaction turning our real entropy into a kind of complex number, no longer comparable (no more "more" or "less" entropy). Then the second law of thermodynamics becomes, in many cases, null and void, and energy conservation becomes very different indeed as long as "magic" is involved.
-
Of course, the case of Spook Spiking seems to argue against intent - did the soldier intend to give Spook that power? Though again, one may argue that in that case position or Ruin's Intent counted. Other possibility is that heart has a huge number of Bindpoints close together, so that the donor spike would indeed get 4 powers (or your whole soul in case of Atium - it is God-metal, so why not? Lerasium alters your soul permanently, Atium steals it.) - but the recipient would only get the power of the acceptor-point ( )the spike happened to be the closest to - even if it pierces several at once. Or maybe the strongest donor power takes over and suppresses all others...
-
Buy. In WoR, Kaladin would get a Plate somewhere around his fight with Szeth.
-
Mind you, you still get extra mass, no matter the true mechanism. You could repeatedly cut off pieces of yourself and regrow them (as long as you are gold compounder), and then do whatever (eat?) the cut off parts. This is not the only case of Feruchemy (even without Compounding) adding energy to the system - the simplest case would be Feruchemical iron on a pump connected to generator storing and tapping repeatedly (say 5sec half/ 5sec 1.5). Bottom line - the energy/mass is probably provided by the Shard in some way, then recycled as usual.
-
I am relatively certain that (since it doesn't have to be Feruchemical gold) this spike goes through one of the universal bindpoints (I am relatively certain that heart is universal or nearly so, for instance, just as it is universal donor). Mind you, the implication from "and it doesn't have to be the healing spike" to "it can be a healing spike" is not certain - it might be, for example, that a linchpin spike can be positioned in different points depending on type of spike while still retaining coordination properties. The particular positioning in Inquisitors was designed for ease of extraction, after all, not for function per se... That being said, I am pretty sure it is one of the possible positions for universal spike, yeah. Strictly IMO, of course.

Chasmfiends and the ecological impact of five years of hunting
Satsuoni replied to Gloom's topic in Stormlight Archive
Actually, the large one we have seen has already pupated, so there is a possibility that they are predatory *after* pupating. Still, I lean towards omnivore diet - rockbuds, shalebark, smaller shell beasts (including younger members of the species), Stormlight as additional energy source - rather than exclusive predators. As mentioned above, there are Chasmfiends in the chasms, but not much in the way of prey - and I don't think all of them were lured there by the bodies, since part of their lifecycle includes pupation on the plateaus. Brandon compared overhunting to whaling, so the things might be content in eating a lot of small things, like whales. The consequences then may be many - population growth of rockbuds leading to increased erosion, smaller shelled beasts mutliplying less Stormlight retained in ecocycles (no gems), etc. Did anyone think about what do Reshi islands eat? I am pretty sure not humans- 19 replies

I have just finished reading Ace Of Skulls, the last Ketty Jay from Chris Wooding. It was a bit sad, but good He writes quite differently from Brandon - the plucking of emotions is more pronounced, the world somewhat less

brandonsanderson.com site redesign
Satsuoni replied to PeterAhlstrom's topic in General Brandon Discussion
By myopes, do you mean shortsighted people, Meg? Because I am that. Brandon's site is OK, though (oops, it seems to be down at the moment)(and, it is up again. huh). Though I have noticed a disturbing trend in design recently (ios 7, windows 8) with flatter stuff that for me tend to blur and disappear as I move my eyes But not on his site, mostly -

Cosmere Battle Royale; AKA Who Would Win
Satsuoni replied to Gamma Fiend's topic in Cosmere Discussion
My thoughts are: Vasher vs Szeth : depends on setting, but I don't think Szeth can resist Nightblood's temptation, so: Vasher drops sword, Szeth tries to draw it, Szeth dies horribly -should probably work. TLR vs GodKing - depends on GodKing's experience in Awakening. As he was at the end of warbreaker, TLR would likely win, if he learns how to awaken stone/metal (and he has more than enough Breaths for that!), or maybe enforce cloth to work as super-armor (not impossible) - Susebron would probably win. Also, the amount of Breaths would probably make him near-immune to emotional Allomancy (Investiture interference) Breeze versus Bluefingers - uhh.. how do we get them to fight? Emotional Alloancy would probably give n edge, anyway. Clod vs Human - depends on skill retention for both of them... Could go either way, but I think Human can ultimately "win" -except that Clod can be repaired with enough Breath so... The lineup that I would like to see... well... Hoid vs everybody who was pissed at him in any of his guises, in a place he cannot run away from? (Yes, I don't like Hoid In my list of Evil he is only below Cadsuane, a few positions above DO) -
We do know that the Plate can be fed Stormlight through the gauntlet. Whether it is fed through a special slot, or whether simply pressing a gem to the inside surface is sufficient is unknown, though. As for the thinness - Shardplate is a powered suit of armor that at least partially feeds into your senses, so I am not sure normal considerations apply. And you could make the gems pretty flat, too. I agree that destroying the plate seems possible, but unlikely (an accident destroying the whole plate is probably rare, and intentional destruction seems stupid). I doubt the pieces that "explode" would work, though - I think they likely decay into dust soon after, if not immediately.

@Cartith -Are you sure about Steelheart? It is Alt Earth, so not cosmere. A short story "Shadows of silence[]" in anthology "Dangerous women" is, though.

I, for one, don't like when characters die in the end. It can be done right, but in many cases it feels forced - a character that has just survived several wars, killed gods, etc, etc is killed on the last page by falling rock? That is just wrong. That is why GRRM's song is such a light read despite several character's deaths - they fall like flies, but their deaths are fitting (and many are rather funny), they don't survive impossible odds (usually), the attachment is flimsy, etc. In case of mistborn, though - well, the deaths are..ok. Not "right", or "logical" for me, but ok. Still, the emotional "heaviness" (not sure how to describe it.. Darkness?) is much higher (for me) than in Song of Ice and fire over the series -especially staring from book two, I am not sure why, and the deaths fit that feeling well enough.
