  1. And again, I would point out that Feruchemy creates energy like there is no tomorrow - in particular, Feruchemical gold can allow you to regenerate lost organs, adding matter to your body (as well as go without breathing/eating for a while). 1 gram of matter, in raw energy form, is sufficient to power human body for thousands of years (assuming average rate of about 300W. It is actually lower) - without growth, of course. So a single regrown finger can account for years of stone-throwing and human-throttling.
  2. One should not forget that Feruchemy also allows for creation of the infinite amount of physical energy - Feruchemical iron see-saw comes to mind. Not all attributes, of course, but weight, warmth and Health, at least, ignore the laws of thermodynamics rather extensively, and not only them, but also laws of conservation of Energy and Momentum
  3. Well... You would probably need to spike a spren to begin with, not Soulcaster. Then you would need to Awaken the thing - theoretically possible, but quite hard (hema charge isn't that much Investiture), and that might mess the charge... Then forge the spike, reducing its power... attach gemstone... To get something that bleeds black smoke, is possibly sentient, and probably insane. OR you could just make a common fabrial that does the very same thing (if you manage to capture, say, cryptic) which, to me, seems easier.
  4. Ah, I see. Well, it is sitting snug in the gem, so it won't be attracted anywhere It may be used to reduce pain too, probably.
  5. Ahem, perhaps I should rephrase. "How is that relevant to the topic at hand? Seems like a non sequitur to me."
  6. Where did that come from? And I would reply "Both, duh", as I did before and will do again
  7. Dor is... Well, the current consensus is that Dor is the raw power left over when two shards were ripped apart (Splintered). I'll search for the quotes. The Shards are quite dead, and, IIRC, the magic system was different before that. And see the quote above - it says "Because the power, once used, returns to him", "him" being Preservation. Here is source: Hm.. I am not sure.. That is what it was called in Ars Arcanum, so I guess... Some fabrials (machines) have a settings wheel (example:spanreed) switching functions to an extent. And frankly, what else do you expect a painspren to do but cause pain
  8. Just a few quick possibilities: Vin can pierce one coppercloud, but barely - she has to concentrate to hear pulses, and her range probably goes down. She probably cannot pierce two of them, do her burning copper would effectively negate her piercing abilities , and make her Seeking only barely effective at most. Seekers in posts- are we sure that they just sit in there, and are not, say, attached to station and patrolling about? The reason for coppercloud in station is to conceal constant Soothing, after all, and the position, not to make skaa Mistings feel safe ...
  9. Ok, Kurkistan have been lazy weary, so I'll try to point out some inaccuracies to the best of my ability. I'll try to limit conjecture.Warning: some of it will be nitpicking. Sorry about that. So without further ado. First, terminology: there are some relatively well accepted terms, using which in a different way may cause confusion. In particular, Investiture is a relatively ambiguous term, but the general consensus (and some WoB) is that Investiture is the power of Shard inside a person or object, etc. "weight/speed/senses/strength/warmth/" are not usually considered as such. The better term would probably be Attributes. Next, let's see... Power source of the Magic system is usually Shard(s) or remnants thereof. While the planet does have a soul, it is not usually tapped for power. In particular, here is a quote about Preservation: Now some corrections on the per-system basis: Allomancy: Hemalurgy: Nalthis.. Now I am not sure what you mean by "performing an investiture (magic)" - is that just a name for a process described in "way of investing"? Sel I am not sure what you mean here. As mentioned above, simply burning tin is sufficient and provides "PUSHING". ... Destination is not provided by intent - it is provided by Aon shape, as are all Aon effects: Once the Aon is drawn, it starts working - it not longer really listens. Intent is necessary to start drawing, though. Fabrials can provide a variety of effects in exchange for Investiture(stormlight) - they are hardly neutral (conjecture) [more conjecture] Negative/positive/neutral refers to Investiture income, rather than something else - in hemalurgy, parts of soul (Native Investiture) are lost from the system [/more conjecture] Roshar: Err... Well... Same arguments as above, actually. Nothing specific is wrong, as far as I can tell.
  10. Um... Kurkistan, if you read this, I officially bestow upon thee the honorable title of Swuhmaocwwe (Somebody who understands how many aspects of cosmere work well enough) and delegate to you the task of pointing out inaccuracies on the OP while I work P. S. I didn't down vote it.
  11. Why would they chop it? The have to cut it for better Stormlight holding, but not chop it to pieces... One other thing: It is not that the size determines the limit of the object to be soulcast - that depends on the Stormlight amount, what it is soulcast into (probably), etc. It is that even if you were to replace it with several smaller stones (that may be possible for Surgebinders), those stones won't last nearly as long. It is probability thing - a large stone may never shatter if you keep soulcasting smaller things, but several smaller would become dust long before that (shattering again and again).
  12. Hm, lack of comment was more rlated to the fact that I don't like to type on my phone... So now that I am home, here are the relevant quotes: First, Stormlight is like Mist on Scadrial: From Ars Arcanum: From interview database (could somebody fix the links on the names there? they all give errors. Wait, that is because TWG archive is dead): So, no, normal Allomancers do not burn mists - they tap Investiture from Shards without having it in the physical realm (which is where the mists are manifested) Metal is a gateway: So there are similarities between two systems, but they are not identical - Surgebinders cannot draw Stormlight from ether/Spiritual realm or wherever it happens to be normally - they need it in gems or their body, a physical manifestation, and they use spren to filter it (presumably). Ok, now to other things: Sphere is described as "crystalline", so presumably it is a kind of gem filled with something other than stormlight: (from the link above) It is unlikely that Odium has splinters - he is greedy with his power, and I highly doubt that the sphere is self-aware (not sentient, but the splinter has to have self-awareness). It might be a bit of his power, though. *might* . He has been on Roshar long enough to his power to seep into the world, after all, so he is stuck. (where is the quote for that?) Let's see, the rest of your post Let's say... partial agreement. Maybe the Heralds could just be immortal and draw on Stormlight directly from Spiritual? That would make them plenty powerful. Yes, partial agreement
  13. AoL Ars Arcanum and numerous other sources identify metal as trigger and gateway for Investiture, not Investiture itself. Just as Mist is analogous to Stormlight, the closest Roshar analog to metal would be gems.
  14. Where did you get the idea that fabrial science is old? Soulcaster fabrial is relatively old, sure (though we don't know how old) - it was somehow made to mimic the abilities of Radiants - but that and Shards are the only pieces that can be called Fabrials - there is nothing else - and the Shards were probably created/grown by spren somehow - not made by humans. Here is quote from Brandon about WoK: As such, I am relatively sure that the majority of the fabrial science is new - sure, it has deep roots that go to KR time, but at their time it was more like an augmentation to KR, primitive and limited. For all we know, Soulcasters were made and charged by KR as well, which is why they cannot be reproduced. I am also relatively sure that such fabrials as heating, spanreeds, painknife, etc did not exist at that time. As I said above, I am relatively certain they simply didn't know how to capture them - not that they had any particular reverence to them. Soulcaster fabrial, for one, doesn't seem to have a spren, at least not in gems. Though I may be wrong.
  15. That is assuming that thing was fabrial - something I am sill not convinced it was. The fabrial science is relatively new -at least for the fabrials as we know them, and Radiants were around when they still didn't have steel swords. Originally, I thought that Stonewards were using Growth with gems being Stormlight source. Now I am not sure, but what if it was a storage device? Charged by Edgedancers with Regrowth, and carried into battle as a health pack? After all, normal fabrials can be recharged by anyone (presumably), so she wouldn't have to conserve Regrowth, but stormlight... A prototype, if you will - a gem construct, but without a captured spren yet. To the topic at hand - I doubt it. Taravangian said "given this monster of a shardblade by your people" - so I doubt Szeth took it. And I am not sure they left the blades anywhere near Shinovar.
  16. I assumed that those are different names for the same thing. "Prime" is a kind of ruler/king for that nation whose name I cannot ever remember. Kadasix is Herald. Hence, Prime Kadasix, King Herald, Herald of kings, Kadasix of Kings, Stormfather (presumably), etc. As an aside, what is that cute thing on your new avatar, Meg? I could swear I saw it somewhere...
  17. I still prefer "emergent eigenstates" over "Forms". And what do ants have to do with your theory, Kurk ? As for your theory, I can neither confirm nor deny it right now
  18. Hm. Yes, that is quite true. Still, it may be forgivable.
  19. Huh. Well, depends on whether I liked the neighbor. Wait, illegal? Legal system is weird. Well, murder for pie is wrong anyway. Don't confuse "murder for pie" and "murder in self-defense and then eating the body since there is no other food around." Because that is useless and unsanitary. And a lot of people (possibly myself including) are squeamish. Using his organs for transplants might be a better solution than injection. At least he would be able to, in some way, compensate for the evils he has committed. Maybe? I have always had an egoistic streak, and I wouldn't be thinking clearly, preferring sweet, sweet madness from stolen piece of soul to a sense of loss. Well, sure, but it is a pretty good copy of our society (specifically, not a bad copy of Stalin's era and several pre-Ussr epochs). It might not be stable, but it was recurring in history again and again: semi-stability, dissidents, revolt, revolution, repressions, and back again to the beginning. That cycle is pretty stable. And families did sell their own children to feed others. I know, I lived with the stuff for most of my life. Though lacking psychiatrists in my country, I am not sure if constant fear counts as depression. Even now, I live alone, with no one to talk to when I get depressed - though I talk to them when I am OK, I simply don't trust them enough to discuss more negative issues. I've learned to cope by repression and concentrating on the pain until something in the head gives and it goes away Yes, that does describe my mother rather concisely, though she isn't the worst Still, survivable Hemalurgy is more useful for extracting several attributes before mercy killing. Or using as punishment for grievous crimes. Though it does make me wonder about what is happening to the soul of spiked and spikee after death...
  20. I believe the quote is in MAG as a quote from Brandon himself, so it is reliable enough. Brandon has a different morality set from his characters, though, one of whom wrote Ars Arcanum. Since "evil" depends on person, well...
  21. Well, yes, but if you are going to kill somebody anyway (like during war), not ripping his soul and using it to augment oneself is greater evil, since it is wasteful killing. Besides, enemy is enemy. The problem here is reliability - like the fact that you may go insane and become less useful. Because the clone is completely different organism, and currently cloning mammal tends to reduce the lifespan drastically, anyway. So, much better to get another child the natural way. For now. Ok, well... When I was 12, my grandfather died before my eyes. I tried to catch his soul in a mirror and absorb it. (I don't think it worked). So. I would probably be ok with that. And my cat. And probably grandma. Though only if somebody I trusted would perform the operation. It all depends on the society: Imagine, for example, people living underground, with limited resources, but machinery that, for a small price of 12 infants a year would guarantee survival of the colony. Are you sure they won't do it? Won't consider it normal, the children heroes? In TLR rule skaa were killed left right and center, for almost any crime, for sleeping (or being raped by) nobles, for hemalurgy experiments. TLR hid hemalurgy not because he thought it evil or depraved, but because it was power that could be used against him (and of Ruin). And his society was stable enough for a thousand years. Well, sure. It is evil. But useful. You can make sentient cats with it - that is always useful. And the wars are also evil - yet societies go to war again and again, for no gain and little reason. Wars are much more useless. I am relatively sure that such damage would be quite visible, akin to Koloss transform. Muscles atrophying, skin sloughing off, insanity almost guaranteed... Though the wound you speak of might be possible with Allomancy spike taken. That is what my enemies deserve That said, it is possible that hemalurgy is not necessary, or is used only individually (metal is grafted into your body and spirit, without removing part and minimal decay). We shall see.
  22. I am well aware of what he wants to hide, but either way, that is not a good thing (unless you can enable *display all and every new topic* in settings later). Besides (and I am aware that it is a personal preference), I love me some spoilers. Marking all topics with "spoiler" tag/title (like the "theory" on recent Chaos's topic) might help.
  23. Presumably, their full vow was something like "we will live our normal lives in animal bodies, unless contracted by Harmony to do otherwise. We are free to add opposable thumbs and voice boxes to bodies if necessary."
  24. Why'd you want to hide new topics, Kurk? That is my default page, and if the topics are missing, I'd never be able to see them, which is sad...
  25. Well, the shardblade lies normally on the stone and can be carried: So presumably, the same thing that would happen if you were to use normal blade. Though it is possible that the unclaimed blade works differently, I suppose.
