"Silas, you old dog!" Shady exclaimed, setting down the glass he was cleaning with a damp cloth. "Shadows, I haven't seen you in these parts in years." Silas stepped over to the counter and gave the aging innkeeper a nod. Decent crowd, at the Waystop Inn. Time was, the inn had seen worse, or so Shady would tell you, if you listened to the old man spin a yarn or two. "You know how it is, Shady," he said. "I go where the work does." Never mind that Shady had gone by other names on other worlds. It was as Shady that Silas'd known him first, and it was the name that came most readily to his tongue. Shady nodded, sagely. "Still working, then? Silas, I could've sworn that you'd left this sort of work by now." Silas smiled, ruefully. "As I said, Shady, you know how it is. The work gets under your skin, and then you're in deep, disentangling leads, trying to work out where to go next." He shrugged. "Guess I never really found a way out of the game." "Still," said Shady, "Should know you aren't alone here, say Khas occasionally shows up here and there, for all he's said he's out." "Khas?" Silas blinked. "That's someone I haven't heard from in—quite some time." In quite some time, thought Silas, and not with this particular face. Something to do with Wurum, from what they say." But he was too old, too long in the tooth for such games, Silas reflected. Maybe that was why he liked Threnody best. Some of them never really liked the world—Khas'd described it as a 'Cognitive Shadow scarcity pseudo-postapocalyptic hell world' once, but there was something simple about chasing criminals and fools in the Forests of Hell and completing contracts that appealed to him, in his twilight years. Sometimes, you had to keep the lights on, even when you were tired and waiting to die. "So what's the word, then?" "Seems like a fellow by the name of Vinnie's looking to gather a crew for an expedition." "Huh," said Silas. "Dangerous." "S'usual, isn't it?" "Yeah." Silas thought about it a little longer. But he was in between jobs at the moment, and this was work. Even if he wasn't up to it, he'd reckoned he'd want to keep an eye on this Vinnie and what he was planning. "Right, so deal me in. Where's he, and how do I sign up?" Shady grinned. "So, you're interested then you know the drill." Silas slipped the chits across the counter. Dangerous to deal with silver in plain sight, for all Shady kept Slaughter below the bar. An old dog like Shady knew a great many tricks and slept with an eye open, but even so. And there were other valuable things, when you worked the game for long enough. Things more priceless than silver was on Threnody. "S'pleasure dealing with you," Shady said, smoothly. "So, care for another drink? Still haven't caught up from that last time, and I'll tell you exact what I've heard about this Vinnie..."

Similar to me, though for me it's the other way around - mood and inspiration are my primary drivers. Getting too engaged with solving a game as Village can negatively affect my ability to RP, which is unfortunate. But if inspiration is strong, then I usually still do some RP/keep it up anyway. Time definitely plays a role as well. Khas is my iconic (probably more so than Kaddar) character for this reason. I don't know if I would say most fun, because my memories of the game are badly swamped by the turning point on N4, but I really enjoyed the amount of scheming and plotting we were doing. And it's still my first SE game and my first Evil game, so the memory is strong. Partly as well because of his ties to Wurum, Wyrm's own iconic, I suppose. I remember Edaan, yeah. Didn't know he died, but I definitely knew you didn't play him anymore. I'd agree with this. Kaddar became an ascended secondary iconic for me because of how many kills he tanked in MR4 and still kept on living. I kind of respected that and felt as though that needed acknowledgement. Sometimes I bring back characters I feel I didn't really do sufficient justice to, like LG20 Karnan. But I've very seldom recycled unless it's a GM character I will be using to GM a few more games, like Karsten Heron. I remember this RP off! Jain and Wyrm and I were messing around too Probably a tie between AG2's Kassien and LG73's Duncan Kerr. Duncan tied up quite a few loose ends from MR3 for me, and was a nice reference to that game, which was probably one of my slightly less disastrous Elim runs, but one I got to work on a team with Wyrm. I liked the way I got to explore what it must've been like, on that doomed platoon, led into greater disaster by Wyrm, with Kas backing him to the hilt. Duncan's ending felt right. It felt like catharsis and I loved it for that. With Kassien, it was just getting to do standard Tyrian RP and to bounce off El. She decided to sign up as my apprentice and we spent a decent chunk of the game while I was alive collaborating on our RPs in order to make things work. At points, it was more interesting to me than solving! My permanent regret is I never ran Kamsil. In AG3, Wyrm and I agreed to do 'paired RP' as well. This wasn't just collaboration, or rather, it was going to be more difficult. He would run Wyl Sharpe, a noir private eye. I was going to run Kamsil, a blind swordsman. Our characters would be good friends, but Wyrm was going to be writing everything noir-style, and I would take that and translate that into wuxia-style. We'd synched up and prepared our introduction posts, with Wyl talking about how Kamsil was an old friend of his from his days in Luthadel (I think?) and Kamsil talking about how Wyl was the only man to beat him in a brawl which was why they'd become friends in the first place. The two genres are quite different so we expected it to be wild, good fun, and also a challenge. I backed out of AG3 for life reasons and SE stuff I don't wanna talk too much about. But in all fairness, I don't expect to have lived long in that game. Wyrm would've had to kill me sooner or later, so I guess nothing much was lost.

Double-posting to thank you! I rechecked, and tried a new converter. Still leaked. Long story short, realised it was a very thin crack in the housing (it's transparent), so the loupe wasn't enough, but I uncovered it via a flashlight. No more leaking, thank goodness. But I'll need to pick up more spare parts...

I could ask this in a non-specific dead doc, but I kind of want to get input from more people than this. RPers of SE unite! We only have our lives to lose! Okay, but seriously: what determines whether you RP or not? Do you find yourself returning to a few persistent characters or do you go the permadeath route and retire a character for good if they die in a game? Am curious about your style as I know in the single-digit LG days, permadeath seemed more the rule than exception, but now it's all over the place. I try to stick to permadeath where possible. I feel it makes me more invested in the characters, and getting to kill Duncan Kerr for good in LG73 was a great part of my SE experience, though admittedly I have no idea what to really do with Koren and Araris gave him a fantastic send-off anyway. I do have a couple of ascended/recurring characters that are very closely associated with me in the heads of long-term SE-ers (IDK, I'm guessing here!) that I probably wouldn't permadeath but I don't put them out in games anyway. I guess I would also say it feels satisfying, almost as much as finding Elims, when you get to close out the arc of your character just so and finish it the way it should be done. For that matter, which RP run are you proudest of?

Yes, basically this is a point where I'd call it in favour of the Elims, because that future Elim has not been killed, and it seems cruel to ask the player to exe themselves, but there is no way the Village wincon in that world is fulfilled, while the Elim wincon has not technically been fulfilled yet but will be if forced to play it out. Hmm. Ok, you're right, in that world, yes. But this would also be noted in the Time Vortex doc, because players could actually be receiving questions, so I don't think this is too problematic. The Master would be much harder to detect, and less useful unless he shuts down all actions targeting him that aren't kills. I mean, the thing about that taking you quite a while is also that it actually makes the info less game-breaking. Discovering who all the Elims are C2 is gamebreaking. It's passé on C9. Asking for certainty is also tricky because certainty is a doxastic state, meaning people can report uncertain or irrational doxastic states, e.g. because they are subjectively more confident/have higher credences in claims like '2+2=4' than Renegade identities. Basically, once you start asking them about what their belief states are or ascribed degrees of confidence are, it's harder to defensibly enforce truthfulness since people can fail to be perfectly rational or to reflect on their credences appropriately. Conversely, very confident players will also throw this off. Again, my reflex to the second question would be to allow any screwball but technically true answer from the Elims, because the point of the question is both thematic and to allow the Doctor to reliably occupy several roles, e.g. rolescan, target scan, action scan, alignment scan, depending. The other way instead of yes/no is to potentially add in The Valeyard and allow him to lie since he's iconic anyway, and/or also go with what I suggested in B. - I'd realistically have to intervene as a GM no matter what, given the questions mechanic, since at least one player is going to mess with the question. B codifies it and makes it formal and makes it clear then that if the question passed GM checks and has been handed on to the player, then it has to be answered honestly.

True - but I think the other concern is really just Villagers info-dumping and asserting it's true as an irrelevant answer. I prefer yes/no responses in this case then, I don't think 'any question' works without Aonar as a GM, since this was originally his Free Magic spirit mechanic I agree with Aman and Orlok - if Elims can lie, then it defeats the point of the question. Sort of the Archer problem all over again. I mean, if players really want me to rules lawyer, then - yes or no question with a single clause. The moment you have 'and' in there, for instance, it's not a valid question. If your question can't fit in less than 140 characters, it's not something you can ask. Edit: @Ashbringer - the other way I think is if you split the roles into Master and Valeyard - so the Valeyard, as the real 'anti-Doctor', will shut the Doctor down for two cycles, and the Master can lie. Edited to add 2: So my takes on this: A. One way is to relax GM enforcement if the player is clear they want to powerfully Aonar this. In other words: the more you want to be Aonar and deliberately use the rule to destroy the balance as far as you can, the more I'll allow the Elim team to Aonar you just as strongly, and accept any technically truthful but creative solution that screws with the answer the Doctor wants, creating an armsrace. Since the whole point of the question ability and the truthfulness being enforced is that the GM had to step in I will accept all player names listed with RSA or OTP encoding. It sounds fair. Want to make another specification it should be in plaintext? Alright, plaintext Ancient Chinese homophones sounds fair. Wanna do cuneiform? I'll allow it. Has to be in English? Okay, hope you enjoy badly handwritten messages, and so on. 'Current' teammates? But you're dead, you don't have teammates. Or you're not yet in the game, and as such, don't actually currently have teammates. Okay, I'll allow that. You can argue I'm letting the Elim team get away with breaking the spirit of the rule and abiding by the letter of the rule. At which point I'd raise my eyebrow and ask the Doctor at which point they think they're not breaking the spirit of the rule either. Live by the sword, die by the sword. B. The other way is if you (general you) prefer me to take the tighter regulatory approach. The Doctor can ask any question, but it has to be GM approved, so closer to MR1 Nightwatcher. There are several simple guidelines to this: The more gamebreaking the information you ask for, e.g. the roles and the alignment of the entire Elim team, the more likely it is your question will be rejected. Be sensible. If your question cannot be answered with yes/no, or the name of a player, it is highly likely to be rejected. If your question is longer than 140 characters, it is highly likely to be rejected, because this means you are trying to Aonar. If your question can translate to an ingame action, e.g. rolescan, action scan, action tracker, it is highly likely to be accepted. I am happy to tell the player if they ask me in advance whether their question is acceptable or not. If your question contains more than one clause, it is likely to be rejected. Don't Aonar

Hmm. So what I was going for was to treat this as was truth indexed to the player's beliefs. There are two ways I could see this going: -I want to encourage players to give the Doctor exactly what he asks for. "list the entire Elim Team exactly" -> "Two Lurchers, One Coinshot, one Vote Manip" is a legitimate answer. I will intervene if a player is being far too slippery in answering, but the more complex/the more info the Doctor is asking for, the more I am willing to let them give him exact words and go ham on the wordplay. Sort of 'if you want to make it this kind of game, you're welcome to deal with the consequences.' I would also say that saying they don't know who the Elim team is is not an acceptable answer for a Villager - you give your best guess, based off the current state of your beliefs. The reason is I think we need to avoid a situation where a Villager takes literally any question and states their alignment as part of the answer. "What is your favourite colour?" "I'm a Villager and it's blue!" -I can also restrict the player to 'Yes/No' answers.

I don't see where this is game-breaking You could find the Master (or one instance of him) and warn the thread, but think about what this costs you: You can't scan for another two cycles The Village may kill that Master ASAP when he spawns in, but you potentially die because everyone knows you're confirmed Village, and your regeneration could be Evil.

I'm fine with this theoretically because unless the Elims have a significant Time Vortex presence (which would put them far off from winning), the main connection this has is with the future regenerations (some of whom are Evil and are currently feeding this info into the Renegade doc!), and the Doctor disrupting the timestream of any player in the Time Vortex. As far as I can tell, the way the rules have been set up means there can be multiple Masters in the Time Vortex, while only one Doctor can use his ability at a time. Since the Master's ability is a passive, this should limit the strength of Village scans via Time Vortex questions (even if the Doctor asks for Time Vortex info) so it doesn't overtly break the game. If this adds too many complications for the BT, then my view would be to enforce doc separation. I'd put the dead players into a separate doc, and the pre-players in another doc, and a third spec doc, and let the Doctor ask someone in the dead or pre-players doc. IMO the safest way is to not allow a doc at all but I actually feel that's a negative - a game that splits players across 'time' via regenerations is potentially going to have difficulty keeping players engaged. The best way I can see to address this is to introduce the Time Vortex doc, which gives everyone a continued stake in the game. I still prefer this current set-up, but welcome comments from more experienced Elims. Ooof. One thing in my head I forgot to add explicitly, thank you. All have to be killed. So if it's all-Village but one Villager will die and become a Renegade, then the game still goes on. (That's the thing Ash and I were thinking about.) I would argue variable by the lord - it allows the GM more fine-tuned control of the distro, which is always a good thing when you're messing around with rules that could really screw with balance. I kind of hesitate because the Doctor is in essence a role scanner ++, soft guaranteed to always be in the game unless you kill his regenerations, not to mention the kills flying around and if Rassilon is Village, and I'm aware that too many scanners in a game is trouble for the Elims. I'm having difficulty working out which of the two sides has the harder wincon right now. I feel the Archivist is most useful with an Elim team that plays teammaxxing because immediately, you know that if you scan a new player and ID them as being regenerated from the NK target, there's a decent chance they're probably Evil since the Elims win as soon as they currently outnumber the Village, i.e. teammaxxing seems like the right strat for them. Though they could always go for the IKYK there I guess. Edit: Oh right. I was using the Topic link, not sure why it failed. But: Does this one work better?

My heart wants to say yes, because she's amazing. But I do think she was a victim of the writing. I'd say I feel that while Capaldi was done dirty by some of the writing, you have better character-driven arcs with Capaldi than with Whittaker. But some of that kind of boils down to if you are a Moffat Whovian, RTD Whovian, or Chibnall Whovian. Chibnall did a great job with Broadchurch but I feel as though he missed quite a bit in Whittaker's run and it hurts me because I like her Doctor and feel I could love her but she kinda got drowned out. And now I'm rambling damnit. But ok: tldr; pinch of salt because my Doctor orderings rn are like: War > Twelve > Unholy Mess of Thirteen/Ten/Eleven > Nine > Eight > Seven (I SWEAR THIS IS NOT IN ORDER I JUST THINK HE'S A LOLTASTIC CHULLSON.) I don't watch for the mythology either and felt some of the Chibnall episodes there fell short. I think small one-offs like Rosa and Demons of the Punjab were fun. Spyfall, Village of the Angels, kinda want to say the Witchfinder episode, and the one I think it's called It Takes You... Like if you're a big mythology Moffat style fan or when RTD liked to do the Holy Doctor stuff then I guess you might like the Flux arc but IDK it's controversial af. Yaz and Whittaker's Doctor were supposed to be great but I felt like it just wanted to be iconic like Ten and Donna or Twelve and Clara but never really got there. And I like Yaz! Mad excite for Ncuti though :eyes:

Herlitz wouldn't be thin. There are two varieties here, but the ones from...I kind of want to say the ones not from China, but I can't remember if it's their China or Indonesian line - are bad, feathering and all. The other one is fine, cheap, and takes ink like a champ. Ah. Sorry, can't help you there. I do have a sample of egret (?) paper from Lennon Toolbar and a couple of Taobao calligraphy papers but it's easier for me to get my hands on those because of our connection to the Chinese market.

No because I generally have no use case for it. Herlitz paper is good and cheap, and I have TR and Midori for when I want to be a bit more fancy with shading.
