  1. Or maybe the artist just forgot to include it? (not being snarky, just presenting a genuine possibility). Could also be on the other side of the coat flap. The flap is sticking out as if it is being pushed back: (don't know how to embed the image directly under this part so you may have to refer to further in my post) But if we are using all the artworks as reference, then the UK artwork should be considered, and she is in a full dress in that one. But all dresses have safehands that can be opened and closed. They also can include a safe pouch that can be fastened and unfastened. That is not unique to that dress. Shallan, as well as Navani, Jasnah and etc have all mentioned that. It is actually standard for vorin dresses. True, though in the prompt Adolin was not mentioned at all and two of these as well as the UK version don't include Adolin at all. At the end of the day, these were artist interpretations of the writers prompt which was Shallan, Cognitive realm, and Storm. Brandon ultimately chose one, so we can attempt to glean stuff from it, but as I mentioned in another thread, based on how the past covers have worked, I think it is very difficult to glean much definable information. One point I made for instance is the assumption that Shallan and Adolin will be together the entire book because of this cover. I am not saying they won't. Just Way of Kings has two people on the cover (some think Kaladin, some think Eshonai) and Dalinar. For 90 percent of Way of Kings those individuals were apart or had not even met yet. Words of Radiance same deal. Kaladin and Szeth ran into each other twice across the entire novel. One brief fight in the palace, and then the fight at the end. Finally Oathbringer has Jasnah by herself, yet that scene involves the entire rest of the cast. So for all we know there could be three people off screen. Or Adolin and Shallan could have just met up after having been in separate groups. Or they traveled together the entire time and this is the moment they split. Or (my joke theory) Adolin could be dead and Shallan made an illusion of him (shes done it before) so she does not have to accept his death, thereby her last truth is that Adolin is dead and gone. Basically I honestly feel like the only actual information we can take from this cover is at some point at the end of the novel Shallan definitely ends up in the cognitive realm. What she is doing, how long she has been there, who she is with, who she is not with, and where she is going after this scene are all big question marks to me. edit: oh! oh! oh! Just had a thought! We also cannot say that because Adolin is holding a sword that it is not Maya! Because the UK artwork has Shallan with Pattern sword and she is in the cognitive realm. So if Shallan can manifest her blade while in the cognitive realm, then theoretically so can Adolin!
  2. That was my point. Having the sword doesn't mean he is going on an expedition. He wore the sword when going to speak with another brightlord in the warcamps. So the sword is more for in line with the codes than to be prepared for anything. As to the clothing, Shallan is wearing a dress under the jacket. She also has a safe hand sleeve. Are you guys discussing the winning cover? Or the runner up? edit: See?
  3. Re-reading the prostitute scene with Adolin in Way of Kings makes me feel like the sword is not as important an indicator as thought. In that scene Adolin has a side sword that he rests his hand on when first talking to the Sadeas officer. When Adolin and the two guys with him get surrounded, then he summons Maya. So it certainly seems that walking with a side sword is normal regardless if you are bonded with a shardblade or not. Or at least it seems common for Adolin.
  4. I thought that's what you two were getting at in regards to discussing "absolute morality". For instance the slavery topic. He or she was not saying that there was nothing wrong with slavery. Just at that time, at that place, in that culture, it was seen and perceived as acceptable. So it was treated as such. We now looking back, with our own time, place, and culture, we see and perceive it as unacceptable. So it is treated as such.
  5. From a philosophical standpoint, the question becomes how do you know what that voice is telling you is good and moral? The "Son of Sam" heard a voice telling him what was the right thing to do and he truly believed it was. From other individual's perspectives, what that inner voice was telling him, was most certainly not good nor moral.
  6. HUGE DISCLAIMER PLEASE READ ENTIRE POST ESPECIALLY THE END Just had a crazy idea that I had to write down while fresh in my brain, then later I will respond in full to chickenliberty. What if Adolin dies early to mid of Rhythm of War? What if Shallan gets incredibly hurt by his death, and thereby makes an illusory Adolin so she would not have to come to terms with his death? She can pretend he is still there. The scene on the cover is her and illusion Adolin. That her fifth and final oath, that she will confront in book five, is that Adolin is dead and gone, and she needs to move on! How is that for an insane twist? HUGE DISCLAIMER PORTION OF THE POST. PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY 1. This is just a "wow random idea I had" post. It is not a theory to be taken seriously 2. The likelihood of this idea, stands equal in my head as my other ideas. Ideas like that Navani would become a dustrbringer since an engineer would like to see the "inside of things" despite Brandon having said we have not seen a PoV of a dustbringer as of Words of Radiance, and we had already gotten a Navani PoV. Or that Malata is actually on team good guy, but is a solo spy on the Diagram, and everyone just thinks the dustbringers are bad. These are total tinfoil theories. I just like the way they sound or the twists they provide 3. This idea does not mean I want Adolin to die 4. This idea does not mean I do not like Adolin 5. This idea has nothing to do with the number of PoV's Adolin has had in the past or will have in the future 6. This idea has nothing to do with whether I do or do not consider Adolin an important character It was just an idea that came to me that I thought would be an insane twist so thought to share it. Hopefully that disclaimer covers everything. Whew!
  7. Again, my intent was solely focused on using the cover having Adolin and Shallan as evidence that they had to only be in group 2, because the cover only included the two of them. I am in the middle of something right now, so I cannot at this time, but I will be happy to read your post in depth and in a separate post comment on my overall thoughts. But the point of my post was to indicate we cannot glean much information from the cover and certainly cannot use it to conclude what group they are part of. In my opinion. edit: Oh! Also consider that for most of Way of Kings, Kaladin/Eshonari (depending on interpretation) were separate from Dalinar for 90% of the book, yet they shared the cover. Words of Radiance, Kaladin and Szeth were separate for 90% of the book, yet they shared the cover. Jasnah was off to herself for a good chunk of Oathbringer, yet the solo cover she has is in a scene with the rest of the cast. So for all we know, the scene on the Rhythm of War's cover could be the groups meeting up, and Shallan and Adolin having just seen each other after having not been around each other the entire book. Not saying I am saying that is the case. Just trying to illustrate how difficult it is to take anything in the image as a means of conclusion.
  8. Eh, to each their own. I am not overly attached to either interpretation so am fine with it going either way. Regardless, both scenes were not the "big" moment which was the main intent of my post.
  9. The spear and shield are of parshendi bones. Kaladin was using it to draw parshendi fire. edit: Its chapter 62. You have to read for a bit before you reach the scene.
  10. That was thought to be the case for awhile, but the person in the distance is wearing a shield on their back and is holding a spear. Eshonai was wearing shardplate and had a shardblade in that scene. Yes Eshonai saluted Dalinar and Dalinar saluted her back after the battle, but earlier Dalinar saluted Kaladin and bridge 4. Its page 876
  11. Did you use Elliot? You have to use a person with a "smiley winky face" which shows that they will produce the best of the best of that recipe. You should then end up with a good chunk of the best version, some of the medium, and some of the eh version. The best and the medium is sold for more than all the ingredients you bought combined, which nets you profit to buy more and do it over again.
  12. FIrst and foremost, just to be clear I am not ringing in favor of either line of reasoning (Shallan and Adolin in Group 1 or Group 2). What I am commenting on is I think it is too early to conclude that Adolin and Shallan can only be in Group 2 based on the cover because it just shows the two of them. The reasons I state this is because (in list order for fun!) 1. The scenes portrayed on the covers are not pivotal scenes. As in, they are not moments that can provide spoilers nor are the "big" moment of that book. 2. The cover of Way of Kings depicts Dalinar saluting while Kaladin is on the other side of a chasm. The "big" moment of Way of Kings is when Kaladin swore his next oath, jumped across the chasm, saving bridge four, and ultimately saving Dalinar from fighting Eshonai. The salute comes after all the "main" action. It takes a few sentences and then is done. Further and more importantly, you would not know who either person in that scene was unless you read the books, and especially with Kaladin till almost that moment. Nor would you understand the significance. 3. The cover of Words of Radiance depicts Kaladin after he landed and after Szeth had killed a bunch of people. Now this could be argued to be a "big" moment, but again Kaladin swearing his next oath was the "big" moment. Kaladin catching Dalinar in the nick of time was a big "moment" and his battle with Szeth in the highstorm was a "big" moment. Him landing and getting refueled by bridge 4 with stormlight took up just a few sentences. Also, more crucially, from the scene we did not know where we were, nor what was actually happening. The scene does not spoil Kaladin's leveling up, because Kaladin is crouched. He is not demonstrating any additional abilities that we have not already seen. All we know is that Kaladin and Szeth are about to fight, which occurs multiple times in the span of the novel. 4. The cover of Oathbringer depicts Jasnah restoring the wall of Thaylenah. As with the prior two covers, it is not the "main" moment. That goes to Dalinar's declaration that Odium would not have his pain and uniting the realms. Further there are other moments arguably "bigger". Jasnah and Renarin realizing Renarin's visions are not fixed. Amaram getting killed. Dalinar trapping the Thrill. Conversely Jasnah's moment restoring the wall is told from another person's PoV, and takes up 2 or 3 sentences. 5. As shown in the above points, every instance we have seen, the individuals in the cover are not isolated and alone. In Way of Kings, the scene involves not only Kaladin and Dalinar, but also Adolin, and all of Bridge Four. In Words of Radiance, that scene does not only involve Kaladin and Szeth, it involves also Dalinar, Adolin, all of Bridge 4, and etc. In Oathbringer, the scene involves not only Jasnah, but the entire cast showing what everyone is doing to support the war effort. So all this leads me to conclude that it could just as easily be depicting Shallan and Adolin while off to the side are three other characters, indicating Group 1, or it could be Group 2 or even Group 3. So again, my only argument is, having just two people on the cover does not confirm that they will be in a group that only has two people.
  13. Hey at the end of the day build however makes you happy. That's what is great about the system. Buy the ingredients for an omelette. Use Elliot to make it. You will get an ommlette that sells for more than the materials it took to make it. Use that money to buy more materials for the omelette. Make more omelettes, rinse repeat.
  14. I thought there was a bunch of WoB on this. I will list what I recall and pull them up later when I have a chance for reference 1. affecting metal in a person's body is difficult due to the person's innate investiture. Though difficult, it is not impossible (as evidenced by the Lord Ruler pushing on Vin's metal flakes in her stomach) 2. Metal spikes (both hemalurgically charged, as well as normal) can be burned by the person it pierces. Just you have to consciously chose to burn them, and it is very painful. 3. Affecting metal in a person's body is more dependent on the strength of the individual using the power, than the concentration, though it can help. Wax for instance was able to see the spikes in Tensoon via his steel sight, and push on Wayne's metal minds when they were not as full.
  15. When you can put it on either Elliot or Emma and never look back. Maxed out it gives 90% chance of criting on magic. Magic that can hit every single enemy on the field. Magic that can target enemy weakness. Mobieus may not seem like much now, but get to cooking and use the omelette trick for making money to buy a ton of ingredients and you are golden. End up a better healer/buffer than a magic healer, and you have room to spare for other quartz. edit: side note, this is not RNG. A high percent chance actually matters. So 90 percent chance to crit, means you crit just about every single time on every single enemy. Dodge chance of 70 percent and up means you almost never get touched.
  16. Potentially yep. I am curious why no one followed up later to get a more definitive answer from Brandon. Side note, I have a personal theory (though it is very loose as there is not any concrete evidence supporting it, and some have stated it does not work this way) that Jasnah was suffering from a minor form of schizophrenia. That like John Nash Jr, Jasnah learned through logic to cope with the symptoms. Her use of logic to maintain a form of "sanity", is what I think attracted Ivory, that she ultimately meets the night of Gavilar's death. But like I said, at this point, it is a very tinfoil hat theory
  17. Not an exact date, but this may help Questioner When did Shallan take the First Oath? Brandon Sanderson That's been quite a while. She's been on this path longer than almost anybody. Jasnah's been going for a while. If you look at the timeline, I think Jasnah beats her. But she's been on this path for years. Questioner Do we get to find out when she took that First Oath? Brandon Sanderson Yes, I'm planning to delve into that. It's supposed to be a "Wait, What?" I'd have to look exactly at the timeline, Jasnah beats her. Jasnah definitely beats her. Questioner 2 <Are you sure?> Brandon Sanderson Maybe not. I'd have to look at the timelines. This is why I have Karen, to keep my timelines for me! FanX 2018 (Sept. 6, 2018)
  18. That is another theory I have heard and I like a lot. I still prefer my own bondsmith one, but I could totally Sja-anat having a hand and I think that would be really cool.
  19. There is a WoB for that! lol Rebeca What would happen differently if a person found a Shardblade and Shardplate that belongs to the same Radiant? Brandon Sanderson That is an excellent question. It happened way more in the past than it happens now, but certain Blades and Plates are historically kind of linked together. If you were knowing to look for a difference, you would notice a slight difference, mostly if you could speak to or sense the Sword, but it wouldn’t have a very big mechanical difference, if that makes sense. DragonCon 2019 (Aug. 29, 2019)
  20. So quoting both because my response is to both. We have a WoB confirming that Adolin's shardblade is an edgedancer blade, and that living the edgedancer oaths are not enough to revive Maya. Something more needs to be done. I understand and respect the theory that by seeing Maya as living is that something more. Personally I disagree, and lean towards my personal theory of the something extra being a Bondsmith using connection to infuse Maya with investiture, to restore what was lost (thereby avoiding the issue of investiture interfering with investiture). But I wish you luck with your theory! Kaladin al'Thor I noticed my last time reading Words of Radiance that there were several times-- vines that were on Adolin's shardblade as he summoned it. So I was wondering if maybe the Radiant who used it had was an Edgedancer? Brandon Sanderson You are right. Kaladin al'Thor You mentioned before that it would be possible to revive a dead shard[blade], but it would be very difficult-- Brandon Sanderson Very difficult. Kaladin al'Thor Like I think what you said is that it would have to be the same person that broke the bond? Brandon Sanderson That would be the-- Yeah. Kaladin al'Thor So if it was an Edgedancer's blade if he made those same oaths could potentially he… Brandon Sanderson That would most likely not be enough. Something else would have to happen. Good guess though. Firefight release party (Jan. 5, 2015)
  21. It doesn't split. I say that because: Mistborn spoilers So translating this to soulcasting 1. There is cake. there is a bead for cake 2. Jasnah seeing the cake, she understands that the cake is made of layers (sponge?) and frosting 3. Jasnah does not like frosting and wants to soulcast it to smoke leaving the layer (sponge?) 4. Holding the bead for cake, while still seeing the representation of the cake (in the cognitive holding the bead gives you the impression of how it looks in the physical, and being in the physical you can peer into the cognitive to see the bead), Jasnah focused on the frosting portion 5. To all outside observers, the stone is still a stone for cake. Cake is still cake 6. She then chooses to soulcast only the frosting. the stone is still the stone for cake 7. if she then leaves the cake the way it is without frosting (and does not choose to eat it) and people see the cake the way it is now, without frosting, the stone is still the stone, just now it is the stone for a cake without frosting this would stand for the waterfalls turned to stone. you are separating a portion of the water to change it to stone. now that people see it as separate it will have its own separate bead as water now frozen as stone, but the rest of the water still continues. So from my understanding, a "stone" is only formed separate when something is separated and viewed by many as separate. As long as it is still part of the unified whole, and by the many viewed as a whole, it does not matter if you can see it separately, it does not make a new stone. that make sense now? Edit: to take it further. Let us say the frosting is only external, i.e. it is a one layer cake. So just sponge, covered with frosting. Jasnah soulcasts the frosting to quartz. She then lifts the quartz off of the cake, leaving the sponge and places it next to the cake. People will then begin to see the quartz as a cake "lid". The frosting now has its own stone as a cake "lid". But the actual action of Jasnah perceiving the frosting as separate in order to enact soulcasting upon it does not change the stone, and does not change the stone for others. Because the other people still see and perceive it as one unified cake, sponge, frosting and all. So one stone. Regardless how Jasnah viewed it in that moment edit 2: Just had a thought given my cake example. Yet another reason why I love soulcasting! "Aw honey, you ordered your burger with no cheese on it, but they brought you a cheeseburger anyway!" "That's no problem for me!" ::::holds burger in place, then soulcasts cheese to stone, then just peels it off in one solid chunk:::: "All fixed!" edit 3: added the quote from the Mistborn book in the spoiler. As you can see, the perception on Wax's part didn't change anything for Forch, till Wax actively acted on it.
  22. (Genuine question) Did you see my Mistborn mention earlier? Wax does the same thing. Also Roshar has a general understanding of atoms. They refer to it as axi. There is a scene from Jasnah's perspective where she says to herself how she aligns the axi of the air together to create steps. So it is not convincing an object to become two things. It is seeing the object differently, or its component parts. Its the difference between seeing a couch, and then choosing to see it for the cushions, and then take away the cushions. The couch still is, just you understood and recognized a component part of it, and chose to separate it out. But recognizing the component parts does not change that it is a couch on whole. And only if you alter the couch enough that it would not be viewed as a couch anymore, would it then change. Below is the spoiler for mistborn and the quote from Oathbringer. Oathbringer page 1157 She willed steps to soulcast beneath her feet. Individual axi of air lined up and packed next to each other, then Soulcast into stone - though in spite of the realms being linked, this was difficult. Air was amorphous, even in concept. People thought of it as the sky, or a breath, or a gust of wind, or a storm, or just the air. It like to be free, difficult to define. Yet, with a firm command and a concept of what she wanted, Jasnah made steps form beneath her feet. It does say burning letters into a page. I took it as turning minuet parts of the paper directly to flame, leaving the shape of the letters. I guess the alternative of soulcasting the air into fire into those shapes, to etch the paper could work too. Either way, requires much skill, and practice. Here is the quote: Way of Kings page 501 "There was also one of Jasnah burning words after running out of ink. When Shallan had seen her burning letters into a page, she'd been amazed at the Soulcaster's precision.
  23. Yep. Which is where skill, practice, and intent come into play. Shallan was impressed and had no idea it was possible till she saw Jasnah soulcast words into paper when she ran out of ink. Jasnah would need to understand the makeup of the paper, be able to perceive it as separate axia, and intend to change only the ones that shape the words she chooses to inscribe on the paper. Incredibly difficult and awesome at the same time. Its why soulcasting is my favorite of the magics on roshar. Transportation coming second.
  24. Still dont have the time to respond in as much detail as i would like but it looks like everything has been pretty well handled. The only thing i would like to add is that there is a WoB concerning cake. that the bead in the cognitive realm would be for cake, not the individual components (flour, egg, etc). The idea is that a individual who is soulcasting the cake, that is in the know, understands the components and can get that across the the spren (another WoB showing that the only thing preventing a soulcaster from soulcasting plutonium is understanding the structure and getting the concept across to the spren), then the soulcaster could soulcast the flour out of the cake for instance. But that would still require the soulcaster to know what the thing is made of, understand it enough to be able to exclude that portion, and get that across to the spren. The jam is different because jasnah was just soulcasting the whole thing to what she understood to be strawberry jam. Its like i have a glass of water, and you dissolve salt into it. I soulcast the water to water. The salt is "gone" because i soulcasted it all to generic water. Where it went wrong is jasnah admitted she isnt as good with organics, and since she normally dislikes jam, she doesnt have much of a base line understanding to work with to recreate it. Hopefully i didnt confuse the matter further Edit: ah i had one more thought which helps this all! Powdered sugar on top of a cake when it is complete is not seen as separate. Its part of the cake Pizza toppings are not seen as separate from the pizza when the pizza is complete. Its all seen as pizza. So too for the poison. Its a "topping" on the cake.
  25. Quick response, will add more later, but the gist is this. Seeing component parts of an item requires the person soulcasting to be very practiced and heading towards savantism as well as intending to separate out component parts. That requires awareness of the parts existence and conceptualizing it as separate. Its mistborn spoilers: Sorry doing a poor attempt at explaining. I have better examples and more to say but have to run at the moment. Edit: quick side note, forging and soulcasting are functionally different. Soulcasting has access to more power to force the change
