Perhaps Nighthound could be Lightwards' trusty Gengar or Houndoom? I think a psychic pug would spend most of its time reading her owner's mind to see when the next meal time is. And good luck hiding a hamburger from such a scamp.

A sad story. The anime wasn't that great--not the episodes I saw, at least--but the creatures were awesome and lit my young and fertile imagination like a match to a bed of straw. Eevee is like the pug of the Pokemon universe. And even better, all of its evolutions are both adorable and badchull. I was going to say Lightwards would be Sceptile, but I can't find a picture of Sceptile that looks bitter enough.

You can't give me a multiple choice backstory like that, TwiLyght! I don't know what to believe any more. I'd believe either of those stories. The anime has steadily lost appeal to me as I grew older, but I still find the base concept fascinating--human beings gain the ability to capture animals of god-like magical power, which have entirely taken over the world's ecosystems. We then pit these creatures into gladiatorial combat with one another. The Orre setting of Pokemon Colosseum was especially cool, since unlike the Japanese setting most of the games take place in, Orre was modeled off of Arizona. It had an appropriate feel; think Old West, but with outlaws and lawmen who wild magical pocket monsters against each other. It was awesome.

Yeah... Lightwards' Pokemon wouldn't be anywhere near as well off. Can Flareon use Solarbeam? I confess that I never played any of the games besides Pokemon Colosseum, where Flareon was not available. (I used to adore my Pokemon pocket encyclopedia, though.)

Nathan is best Abra. As for the other two... Umbreon and Flareon, perhaps? I'm a sucker for Eeveelutions, so they're my default choices.

...Hold on. If Funtimes is a Pokemon trainer in this reality, would that mean her vanillas are Pokemon she's captured?

This is true. Also, I can see Funtimes as a Fairy-type gym leader. "Someday he'll be awesome and beautiful!" * sniff * "Like me..."

Who would be Blue? And would Backtrack accompany him as a fellow trainer who'd picked Magikarp as his starter?

One Nobel Peace Prize for the Nobelman. Finally got a vanilla to plunge the toilet? One Nobel Peace Prize for the Nobelman. Fed the starving wolf pack with homeless people taken off the streets.
