I'm betting on my ability to take Winter in a fight... which probably isn't a safe bet for me, come to think of it. I call dibs on Lucentia.

TwiLyght, can you be witness to some important legal matters? I'm making an amendment to my will. If Kobold King perishes in a way that any individual confidentially describes as "suspicious," then Voidus is to be edited out of the will and his bequeathed characters transferred to Winter Cloud.

What is it you want? A pony comic starring your OC? A minimum daily quota of Backtrack-tears? Songs of praise sung for your Epic-level creativity?

A challenge to make Backtrack cry? Because that's what Dark!MV would accomplish.

Brandon Sanderson: Pioneer Extraodinaire
Kobold King replied to ElusiveWorldhopper's topic in General Brandon Discussion
"Cosmere copycats..." ya know, I don't think I like that term, any more than I like the term "Tolkien copycats" for the writers of epic fantasy in general. Brandon Sanderson's work has the potential to revolutionize the field of fantasy just as much as Tolkien did. There's a whole generation of future writers growing up right now with copies of Mistborn and Stormlight clutched in their hands; some of them might even be on this very forum. They're going to be inspired by Brandon Sanderson as much as the Bandersnatch himself was inspired by Tolkien or Robert Jordan. If they someday write an epic fantasy series set on many different planets all with unique magic systems, are they copycats, implying lack of creativity, or are they simply rowing their figurative boats down the vast river of ideas that is fantasy? -

The distinction between us and Cupcakes is that we don't revel in darkness for darkness' sake. When an evil character commits an atrocity in the RP, it's only to illustrate the issues of the setting or to prepare a villain for his eventual comeuppance. If TwiLyght had spent a dozen pages describing Fortuity cutting Nathan to pieces while Funtimes giggled by his side, then she would have written a grimdark fic--and one I wouldn't be interested in reading. Being the good writer that she is, she instead hinted at horrific gore as a way of establishing what forms of evil Epics were capable of, and what kind of well-earned terror they could inspire in vanillas.

I haven't seen Daredevil, and the reviews I've seen make me suspect it's a bit too dark for me, but I know what you mean. A story in which Rainbow Dash discovers a horrifying conspiracy in Cloudsdale and finds herself with her loyalties torn between her fellow pegasi and her morals could be fascinating, and I could tolerate some darkness or violence if the story moved forward in the spirit of exploring the characters and the concepts its brought up. A story in which Rainbow Dash turns out to have been EVIIIIIIL all along and is the head of this terrifying conspiracy, with the story reveling in as much gore and misery as it can before ending on a downer? That's less of a fanfiction and more of a slap in the face to the readers who are presumably reading your story because they love the show and the values that you have rejected.

The sequel, [REDACTED], is actually a bit better. Still graphic, still very dark, but with a brilliantly composed score and a plot that ends on a hopeful note. But yeah. There were two gorey fanfics in early MLP history that have influenced all others to come, and both are extremely out-of-character distortions of the show and its values. I don't mind a dark MLP fic--when done right, they can strengthen the values of the show rather than break them down--but the most infamous fanfics are the ones that seemed to relish attacking everything that's lovable about the show and its characters.

If it's "September," sung by the Living Tombstone and animated by BronyDanceParty, then you're at the right video. Fun fact: you know how the correct month of the RP is September? Guess what pony song that's a reference to.

That's why you should always have Pinkie Pie's "Smile" song bookmarked for easy access, in case you see something man was not meant to see. She doesn't scare mine away. If anything, she draws them near.

That, or Dark!Funtimes exists to foreshadow Nathan's character arc when he gains matter manipulation powers and has to struggle not to become evil. Or Funtimes has been dreaming for the past twenty pages and we've all been unwittingly RPing her nightmare. Or Funtimes has been possessed by the same creature that turned Princess Luna into Nightmare Moon. There are a lot of possibilities.

Oh, it's showing. It's alarming to see Dark!Funtimes, once the rarest sight in the RP, rearing her ugly head more and more often. I'd ask whether MV has any family tattoos on her thigh, but then I realized that MV's the type who would have gotten any coat-of-arms lame enough for the Lawrence family removed a long time ago.
