There is a bit later on where Dalinar draws in some stormlight, the healing process begins, and he realises he has done that before, on the battlefield. So, he has been known to draw in stormlight prior to bonding the Stormfather.

How do you know they were neither human nor listener? I don't believe we have WoB telling us what the Unmade are, or were. That they are Splinters of Odium, I'm not going to deny that, I think it is likely. But, I don't believe they are 'living Investiture masses'. That might be how they manifest in the physical realm, but isn't necessarily what we would see when looking at them in the other realms. We even have proof of this. Look at the differences between the 'mindless' Spren in the physical realm compared to Shadesmar. What you see in the physical realm is only a small fraction of the overall Spren.

I'm staying clear of what Cusicesh is the spren of, but I do have a theory about the faces. I think the faces are of the people observing it, and that is why everyone feels a bit woozy (I forget the exact words used) - It is sucking part of their Identity away, or maybe feeding on it. Not enough to harm the locals, but enough so they feel it. Maybe even sucking Stormlight out of their spiritual web.

This was a WoR quote, not OB. Also, I believe it is a reference to Kaladin killing Syl as he fell into the chasm.
-
i remember Dalinar attracting loads of Gloryspren, but I don't remember his proto-Plate. Jasnah's is the only (potential) Plate I can remember, other than Shallan's, which may or may not have been real.

Interesting idea, but I think the answer is going to be 'no'.
-
You have quoted what they look like in the physical realm. That isn't to say that their spiritual aspect looks like something else. If the Unmade were once human (or listener), then does it matter what their physical forms are like? Surely their spiritual forms would still be humanoid?
-
There were ten of them at the big, final showdown, including Taln and Ash. Venli bonded Timbre during the battle. She was the tenth.

Hoid doesn't have the Honorblade. Yes, the Honorblade was switched out by someone, but we don't know who. We have WoB that Hoid doesn't have it though.

I'm in the camp believing them to be Unmade. Also, I don't think they were travelling in the highstorm. I think they were travelling in the spiritual realm, and the only reason they can be seen in highstorms is because the storm opens up a 'gateway' (bad term, I know) into the spiritual realm to allow stormlight to pass through to the physical realm. Also, with regards to someone's comment earlier about the Unmade being immobile, I disagree with this. The comments from Mr T suggest (in my eyes at least), that Moelach is moving on because something has caught the Unmade's attention, and also he talks about finally locating Nergaoul.

The faces were particularly dense this morning?

theory [OB] Adolin and Shallan will not last
Bort replied to MonsterMetroid's topic in Stormlight Archive
While I do agree that he probably knows what's going to happen with them, I'd just like to point out that Brandon himself has said that sometimes his characters do unexpected things, and they develop in new ways he hadn't considered. -
I'm with @The Sovereign although for different reasons. I want to know more about the Parshmen and their background and history. With the big reveal about how humans on Roshar started in Shinover, I think finding out a bit more about how that came to be, and what happened next, will fill in some gaps before we visit there with Szeth in book 5.

You're right, this is going to be really cool. The bit I'm looking forward to the most though, is when the Spren object to how their friends and family are being captured by humans and quite possibly tortured to produce an effect.

[OB] Little late but...thoughts, questions and issues
Bort replied to ColonelMatt's topic in Stormlight Archive
First of all, welcome to the Shard. It's always good to see a new face I'd just like to comment on the points above. -Elhokar's death - The mess leading up to it was a necessary part of Kaladin's storyline. Moash's storyline probably could have done with fleshing out a bit more, but I think it covered what it had to in order to set up that particular scene. The friendly Parshmen killing the friendly guards, and Moash killing the king, all at once, piled on top of each other, was what broke Kaladin for the rest of the book. I can see where you are coming from about it feeling a little rushed, but I think that was deliberate too, so as not to give Kaladin any chance to respond from one shock before getting the next. I once asked Brandon if he wrote 'The Last Battle' (chapter in the final Wheel of Time book) deliberately to be the world's longest chapter, and his answer was 'yes,' because by the end of it, he wanted readers to be feeling the same emotions the characters would be. I think he was aiming to do the same here -*slap* these characters you were liking are now gone; *slap* and so are these ones; *slap* and this one; *slap* oh, and it was your friend who betrayed you, who you already had the chance to kill (and my prediction for the next book... *slap* Oh, and that traitor now has the same power set you do). -Parshmen are just like us - I don't think we've seen the end of this. I think this is going to be a major thing in the next two books, especially the next one (Eshonai/Venli's story). -Azure - I actually agree with you here. While it was nice to have all the greater Cosmere stuff in, the amount of screen time Azure, Wit, and Nightblood got made it feel a bit like it was more of a Cosmere book, rather than Stormlight Archives. -10 Heralds - Maybe, maybe not. It's as good a theory as any right now. I've got this bare bones theory knocking around inside my head that the Unmade are fragments of the Heralds' souls, invested by Odium. We know there are ten Heralds, and nine Unmade, and that Taln, the Herald that held the Oathpact, alone, for 4,500 years, was never meant to be one of them. My current thinking is that Odium took something from the original nine Heralds, and used that to create the Unmade. And that's why they are called the Unmade - they are the unmade fragments of the Heralds' souls. That's what I think anyways. -Resurrecting Parshmen - I doubt we're going to be seeing Eshonai again, except in flashbacks. Or visions, or illusions, not in real life anyways. From what I understand about the Fused though, you are right when you say Odium has a way to bring them back. I think of it like a ghost, possessing a body to use as a host. The Fused are the souls (or something) of the original Listeners that followed Odium. -
I don't think we've had WoB on it yet, but I'm pretty sure Timbre isn't Eshonai. Timbre is, most likely, a Lightspren. Oh, and her dead Granddad might be the deadeye locked up on the ship in Shadesmar. That is pure speculation though.

[OB] What’s your favourite chapter in the Stormlight Archive?
Bort replied to ICanDream's topic in Stormlight Archive
Less chapter, and more chapters. Namely, Whitespine Uncaged - Adolin's duel with Kaladin and Renarin as backup. -
She was nonplussed. To me that means confused, or maybe shocked. I think that would be a natural reaction if she had just mysteriously summoned armour without realising how. Also, if it was a surprise to her, she might not be able to get it back immediately, until she figures out how it was done.
-
I disagree Yata, otherwise why wasn't she wearing it? Jasnah was in the middle of a battlefield, with enemies outnumbering friendlies by quite the margin. If she knew how to summon her Plate, do you not think she would have been wearing it? She seems far too sensible for it to be otherwise.
-
Oh, well, that's just great. Brandon uses a word that could describe both confused, and unperturbed (or not-confused). So, really, it's a pointless word in the description, since it could mean that she was confused by the glowing framework, or she wasn't confused by the glowing framework. Edit: I tweeted Brandon for clarification, since to me it makes no sense to use the word 'nonplussed', if Jasnah wasn't puzzled or confused by something.
-
During the battle for Thaylan City, I believe Jasnah swore herself an Ideal. When Adolin is rushing around trying to help, he comes across a perplexed looking Jasnah, who has fading lines of a grid around her. I think that was her first manifestation of Shardplate. I also think Brandon kept it off screen because our main PoV characters aren't there yet, and Jasnah won't be one of those until books 6-10.
-
She was raised as royalty, expected to put on a suitable appearance, all the time. And as she herself explained to Shallan, it's all a matter of perspective. If people view you as royalty, then they will treat you as such. On the other hand, I have a neighbour who spends hours putting on makeup. Not because she needs it, or is going out somewhere, but because she enjoys wearing it, and thinks it makes her look better. Why can't Jasnah be that vain?
-
I still think it's about his perceived failures. "I will forgive myself my failures, in order to better protect the living." When you think about it, he was almost ready to swear, but it was the memories of the people he sees himself as failing that prevented him. Also, his line to Syl ("It's going to be a hard one, isn't it?"), and her response in the affirmative. His father told him way back when he was still a surgeon's son - "You've got to build calluses, son. You've got to learn when to care, and when to let go." - and this is something he has never been able to do.

Welcome to the Shard So long as you are in the right forum, you shouldn't need spoiler tags. Some people use them anyways, just in case someone wanders in by accident. To answer your question, Honour's Perpendicularity is a transition point between the physical, cognitive and spiritual realm. There is a hell of a lot more to the story than that, but it all depends... how deep do you want to go?

At the end of Words of Radiance, Hoid and Jasnah are talking. During the conversation, Hoid says that one of the things he knows is what it is like to live inside a stomach being digested for a week. While rereading Edgeddancer, I've just spotted a conversation between Lift and Wyndle in chapter 12.
