The sixth chapter (and the final sample chapter) is now posted on Tor.com. This will have to be your last Alloy of Law fix, but boy, it's a good one. Guns! Allomancy! Awesomeness! You can check out the chapter here: http://www.tor.com/stories/2011/08/the-alloy-of-law-chapter-six And our requisite spoiler topic can be found here:

Is it just me, or were there more typos in this chapter than usual? Cheese Ninja already referenced one. Should be Marasi. So, is it metalborn or is it Metalborn? On the broadsheet, it was Metalborn. I would think capitalizing it would be more consistent with magic users--Mistborn, Misting, Feruchemist, Allomancer, etc. Should be constable-general. Probably a formatting error for Tor.com, but it should be one paragraph. Other than typos, this was an awesome chapter. More mysteries about koloss-blood, and whatever the crap is going on with Miles. Also, come on. Marasi is way cooler than Steris

Oh, yeah, that's true. That leveling system was my favorite. If it makes you feel better, by gaining reputation points you can become a Shard. That's practically a god

It is a bittersweet day, because Timewaster's Guide is closing its doors after many years. It feels like an end of era, but that just means there is a new beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel... wait, wait. Let me try this again. Timewaster's Guide was the place where Brandon's forums were located. It was the place where I met a ton of amazing people. It's through this site that our staff met. So, with a community that has such history to it, I'm saddened to hear that TWG is closing its doors. The reason was because the site got hacked. Now, don't panic if you were a TWG member. What happened was some jerk hacked into the site, and posted a gigantic spreadsheet of emails and passwords. However, the passwords were salted and hashed--fancy language to say that the passwords were encrypted. It would be theoretically possible to break the password (especially if the password was really simple), but I think the most important thing to do is, if your email on TWG used the same password as your TWG account, I'd recommend changing passwords. Ultimately, I would not worry. About the worst thing that could happen is you get some spam, because the emails are publicly posted. Just make sure your password is good and everything will be fine. In any case, the Spriggan, the administrator on TWG said it would be challenging to fix the site due to the great deal of custom code on it. With that site closing, a few key communities vanish with it: Brandon's, Dan's, and the Reading Excuses writing group. It is phenomenally humbling, then, to announce that we have now become the official forum for Brandon Sanderson. Check out the screenshot. In addition, we are pleased to give Dan Wells's forums and Reading Excuses a home as well. It's only fair, because Dan was so gracious to give the writing group of Reading Excuses (which I have had the privilege to sometimes-moderate) space on Timewaster's Guide about three years ago. If you've never been to 17th Shard before, welcome. I hope you will enjoy your time here as much as you did on TWG. We're slowly making the site better with each passing month (better server hosting is coming eventually!). The Welcome to 17th Shard topic explains all about the site, its features, the rules, and--most importantly--the meaning of the pretty colors some members' names are in. And, um, welcome to the official Brandon Sanderson forums? Wow. That feels weird to say. I don't think we'll get over that anytime soon, if ever. You guys know who Dan Wells is, right? He's this amazing author of excellent psychological horror novels. The first of his John Cleaver series is called I Am Not a Serial Killer, and if that title doesn't make you want to read it... you clearly have issues. And, believe it or not, the two sequels are blow that superb first novel out of the water. You're missing out if you aren't reading his stuff. As for you Reading Excuses members, I've posted a topic in our new home about the transition. I’m going to send you an email shortly, but basically, if you submitted this week, go ahead and re-post it. We'll do this week's critiques like normal. Some people have asked us if 17S is susceptible to a hacking, too. I would not worry. We are using very modern (and expensive) software in Invision Power Board. While it's always theoretically possible, I'm confident we will be okay, considering we pay for this stuff. And if you're sad that TWG's data is gone forever, don't be! I'm working with Spriggan to get a backup of the forums going, which will be read-only. I'll keep you all posted about the progress.

Everyone, welcome Dan Wells, psychological horror author extraordinaire. With TWG closing its doors, we’re going to be hosting Dan’s forums for quite some time. His John Cleaver trilogy is amazing, and if you haven’t read it, you’re missing out.

It's time to give this a permanent link on General Theories. This wonderful Brandonothology is pretty much the best resource for cosmere research ever. All credit goes to zas678. Link: https://sites.google.com/site/brandonothology/home Here's Zas's introduction to this:

A welcome to 17th Shard, and site information
Chaos replied to Chaos's topic in 17th Shard Discussion
Groups on the Shard Let me introduce you to the several groups on the forum. Most of you are in a group called "Members" but there are some special groups you should know about. 17th Shard staff Head Administrators: These are the three founders of site. They are Rubix, otherwise known as Josh Walker. He is one of the co-founders and the owner of the site. He and his wife, Mi’chelle--firstRainbowRose--both live in Utah and primarily stalk Brandon. Then there is me, Chaos, otherwise known as Eric Lake. I'm the day-to-day site administrator. When the site breaks, it is usually my fault. Administrators: These, along with the Head Admins, are the day-to-day leadership of 17th Shard. Some of these have a particular area where they specialize in outside the forums, like the Coppermind or Arcanum. They have expanded powers over moderators. Moderators: These are staff members who do regular management of the forum, like move topics, edit posts, deal with reports, etc. Other groups Next up, we have people who are not 17th Shard staff, but manage other sites we run. There are Keepers, which manage the Coppermind Wiki, and then there are Arcanists, which are staff of Arcanum. Then, we have +Patrons, who are our Patreon supporters. Lastly, we have Dragonsteel Entertainment which include Brandon, his assistants like Peter Ahlstrom and Isaac Stewart, and other Dragonsteel employees.- 5 replies

Welcome, darniil! I've been enjoying your edits on the wiki so far, and I'm glad you could join us. I'm Eric, aka Chaos, and I'm the forum/site administrator. I probably know too much about Shards. You'll see me around a lot.

Greetings all Reading Excuses members. Welcome to 17thshard.com--also known as why I was not as active on Reading Excuses for the past considerable while! Since Reading Excuses is related to Writing Excuses, and Writing Excuses is related to Brandon, hey, it kind of works, right? I'm sad to see TWG go. It was a fantastic community, where I met many of the people who now populate these boards. I loved that site. Here's basically what happened: TWG got hacked. Due to the great amount of custom code that was on the site, Spriggan--the website administrator--said it would be challenging to fix it. He also said that the original purpose for TWG to exist was so the group of friends at The Leading Edge would have a place to hang and catch up with each other after BYU. That purpose could be reasonably filled with other sites, like Facebook. The primary communities still around on the forums were the Brandon community, Dan Wells's forum, and Reading Excuses. For better or for worse, 17S is taking over those responsibilities. I think this will work out well, since it'd be a boon for Reading Excuses to have a greater forum community around it. For Spriggan's posts about the hack, see: And for the big news post announcing the move, see: If you're worried about this site getting hacked, too, well... In theory it is always possible to hack. However, the forum software that TWG used was quite old. 17th Shard runs on Invision Power Board 3, which is expensive and new. It's possible, but unlikely, that this site gets hacked too. And in any case, in the TWG hack, the only things they got were your emails and passwords, but the passwords were encrypted. I would not worry too much about it. Unless your password was a simple dictionary word, you're probably okay. I would make sure that the email address you signed up with on TWG doesn't use that same password, however. What does the move mean to Reading Excuses? Very little, really. The group will operate exactly as its been running for the past three years. Silk will still be the principal moderator. Submissions will roll every week, as usual. We'll just be on this forum on 17th Shard rather than Timewaster's Guide. What of the old Reading Excuses data? I'm going to get the old TWG forum's database, and I'll put it in a read-only forum (probably at twg.17thshard.com) for us to all see. It would be a shame if we lost all those critiques, and fortunately that will not be the case. So, this week we are in kind of a transition period. If you submitted this Monday, re-post your topic in this forum. I don't think anyone got a chance to critique stuff yet. I don't have the submission guideline file handy, so we'll sit tight until I get that old forum data. Also, I'm thinking of reposting the last month of threads that we had, so if you happened to not get to a critique from three weeks ago, there will be a thread here still. Short version: there will be a bit of fragmentation for a while, but eh, at least we will have the archive of the old topics. I think it will work out okay. Before you ask, it would be fairly unfeasible to import the old Reading Excuses forum into this forum. I'm fairly sure moving an individual forum would be difficult, and even if I could, for those old topics to make sense, I'd also have to import the 6,000 members from TWG into our database, which I do not want to do. Sorry. This looks like the main way we could do it. So for people who critiqued this week, make a topic for your submission, and let's get back to critiquing!
-
I sent you an email about it Sprigg. We could host an archive of the whole forum if you desire.
-
It's very easy to have an archive be done. (We did, after all, move our SMF forums to IPB) If Spriggan gives me the forum tables I would like to make an archive of it.
-
If it went down, I'd very much want to move Reading Excuses to 17th Shard. That is quite sad to hear. It had a great run, though, and if it is gone I will greatly miss it.
-
Hell if I know. There isn't a setting for that, though. You gotta think, would a comment then mirror to the forum post? There's fragmentation either way.

The Silence Divine, a future cosmere book, shares a solar system with Roshar, so I would say it is one dimension but different planets. I disagree that they seem like different sets of physics. Brandon has even said there is a Grand Unification Theory for his magic systems. The reason we see variance of magic systems is (from my perspective) different Shards on different worlds. The Realmatic interactions between the Physical, Cognitive, and Spiritual Realms would remain the same. We just don't know all that much about Realmatic theory to understand it. The different magics are just different aspects of the power of creation, just as each Shard has a different aspect/intent to the power of creation. Makes perfect sense to me.

TWG was hacked a few months ago, so there's a big security vulnerability. Please take a look at this topic on TWG if you are registered there: http://www.timewastersguide.com/forum/index.php?topic=8466 Check the spreadsheet that's posted. Your email is probably on that list, so you'll probably get more spam. The passwords that are in the spreadsheet are hashed, so if your password is worth anything, you're probably okay, but I just wanted to let everyone know this.
-
I've got the 408 error a lot when the server is being dumb.
-
Those are all the pictures that I think were publicly posted on Twitter. Peter said he'd upload more this week, so I'll let you know.
-
It's sort of a bug, but it's sort of not. It happens when you promote a topic from the forums to be an article, and thus boosts the number of comments. They are actually referring to the forum topic.
-
Hmmm, yeah, with those big error messages, I am pretty sure that's a serverside issue. It's possible this was caused by it just being slow, so it timed out. And even when it did load, the link "expired" for some bizarre reason. Let me know if this happens again. Also, if anyone else is getting the issue, that'd be good to know too.
-
Coded by yours truly! Yeah. Let's all be glad there are staff here which have a mind for graphics design...
