RoW Reading, Sample Chapters Begin Now, WoBs, Oh My!

Lots of news in the past hour, so let's cover them on the quick!

First, Tor.com has published the Prologue & Chapter 1: Calluses  of Rhythm of War! You can go read them on their website, and also bookmark the Rhythm of War index, because new chapters will be dropping every Tuesday at 9 AM Eastern. You can discuss this set of chapters in our Prologue and Chapter 1 discussion thread.

Normally, this would be news enough, but today we also have a SDCC video of Brandon reading from Chapters 7 & 8 from the new Stormlight doorstopper (also embedded below, for your convenience). Note that the second half of the video is a brief Q&A that's full of spoilers. All of the questions were selected from this Reddit thread from about a month ago, if you want to go read some of the discussion around them.

In less explosive news, Brandon sat down with Alison Flood of The Guardian and did an interview.

Dawnshard, the new Stormlight novella taking place between Oathbringer and Rhythm of War has jumped to 20% in just about 3 days, so that seems to be going well.

And finally, Isaac posted a new Kickstarter update a couple of days ago, it includes some of Ben McSweeney's sticker illustrations and some actual photos of the leatherbound.

I listened to the reading, and that was fun! ...but that'll probably be it for me. I don't partake in the official pre-release chapters, so I'll be spending a lot less time around here until the book comes out.

Oathbringer isn't an Honorblade

Huh, what would the Rosharan poles look like...?

Soulcaster fabrials are specifically more likely to cause savanthood? That's very fitting somehow

Odium isn't aware of how limited Harmony is, this might suggest an information network rather than Shardic nature allowing him to know of Sazed's Ascension

One thing I didn't get about the timeline on this new novella is: it will be released in December and Book 4 will be released in November. If the novella is set between books 3 and 4, wouldn't it make more sense for it to be release before book 4? Are we supposed to just not read book 4 for a month and wait for the novella release??

The physical copy of the novella is coming out around December time (maybe earlier for kickstarter supporters I think but not sure), however the digital copy will be coming out as soon as possible. Brandon speculated it would be at around early October to mid October sometime. Basically you get like a month to read it before RoW

Lift and Kaladin team up!

Fabrials are increasingly important in battle. More support for Navani as the stealth main character.

Moooaash! *Shakes fist*

Really great video from Brandon!  He later corrected himself about Oathbringer being an Honorblade on his livestream...stuff happens.  I am living for this Lift/Kaladin team up!  No more chapter reads for me...time to sit, and wait for the release!

After the sample Interlude of Syl's from the newsletter I am super concerned that Brandon is going to give Kaladin the Disney Luke Skywalker treatment and ruin the character.  Is anybody else concerned about that?  I understand that the characters need to grow but I really thought Kaladin had made peace with his problems now that he had chosen to protect Dalinar and his men. So the Interlude really has me concerned. Oathbringer ended so strongly with Kal and the rest of Bridge Four I was really looking forward to Strong confident Kaladin and instead it looks like we are back to square one. I understand the other characters broaden the story and give us more viewpoints to learn about the world through, but my favorite parts of these books are Kaladin being awesome as Lift would say.  Brandon, please don't ruin Kaladin. Remember you don't have to tear down a character to make another look better. I'm looking at you Disney.

Looks like Tuesday is my new favorite day of the week!! I can't believe they are starting to drop chapters so early. It's almost as if they knew that there is a world full of people who desperately need something positive to look forward to...

I dont think the situations are at all the same. Kaladin has always been portrayed as having serious depression and problems with guilt, and the various achievements he has accomplished

Spoiler

(freeing bridge 4 and saving dalinars army, beating szeth and saving dalinar again in WoR)

, have never magically cured him of this, even if they were achieved with a resolution of his arc for that book and a swearing of a new oath.

Spoiler

Failing to protect elokhar and his singer friends in oathbringer, then being unable to swear the 4th ideal

I think is something that it is very in character for Kaladin to be morose over.

Drayal,

Thank you for your comment. You do raise an excellent point. That and with the action packed chapter that Brandon read to us above I still have hope. I guess in the end we will all have to RAFO. It kind of feels like Kal has been set up for another big loss of someone he cares about and I can see his depression hitting him again. Especially if he lost his parents or his new baby brother. That would affect all of us. However Sometimes it feels like Brandon sidelines Kaladin so he can make other characters shine, which is his prerogative. Though it is dangerously close to what was done with StarWars by Disney. Thanks again for the response!

I can understand what you're saying here. It's been a while since I read Oathbringer, but I remember how it was frustrating to see Kaladin revert back to the emotional state he was in during TwoK. However, I think we should also remember that growth, healing, and recovery, especially with something as serious as depression, is rarely linear. In real life, people who are trying to overcome mental illness can regress at times, and that's most likely what we're seeing with Kaladin. Because character-driven storytelling revolves a lot around the premise of making positive steps forwards (legitimately the message of the Immortal Words), watching Kaladin go backwards is hard to deal with, both from a narrative and personal standpoint. I also wasn't a huge fan of the Luke Skywalker arc in the sequel trilogy, yet I have faith that Brandon will be able to portray Kaladin's struggles in a sympathetic way. He reassured us that Kaladin won't go the "Daenerys" route, so if anything, I'll take that as affirmation that Kaladin will ultimately be okay.

I don't know where to post this, as it relates to Brandon's website not the Shard, but hopefully someone will see it & let the Dragonsteel folks know. (I could not find a "webmaster comments" function on the site.)

The word "rhythm" is misspelled in the text at the left on this rotating banner image on the home page:
Slider-2-row-preorder.jpg?lossy=1&strip=

Could someone (@Chaos maybe?) please pass the info to someone who can fix that image?

That's all - thx.

I mean at the very least I think it's 99% likely that he'll swear the 4th ideal at some point in RoW, which presumably is something about choosing who to save and knowing when to let go. I think that'll be a big step in his growth (and maybe get some badass shardblade too who know)
