In 2021, we had our first Staff Review on the 17th Shard, with the intention of it being an annual occurence. We did it again in 2023, and now in 2025, so it looks like it's become a biannual event instead! 17th Shard Demographics We received 120 responses this year, a significant decrease from the 157 we received during our last review, which was particularly surprising given the overall growth of the community since then. If you're someone who answered the previous one but not this one, or know someone who did, we'd be interested to hear why! Did this year's feel longer or more complicated? Not as active in general anymore? Just didn't feel it? If there's something we can improve next time, we'd love to hear from you! First of all, we asked you: Which of our platforms do you use regularly? About 80% of you use the Discord, whereas almost a third use the forums. That's roughly the same as in 2023, with a small increase in the Discord population and a small decrease in the forums population. Our first big question: On a scale of 1 (terrible) to 5 (great), how do you rate the overall quality of 17th Shard Moderation? Overall our results were pretty positive! Over 70% of you said our overall moderation quality is great, and less than 3% of you gave us a rating below a 4. Interestingly, despite us having far fewer active mods on the forums, our ratings remained almost identical across platforms, with the average rating being 4.68 on the Discord and 4.71 on the forums. Do you think the mods are in tune with the general 17th Shard Community? Here, we asked you to rate us from From 1 (No, they have no idea what we want) to 5 (Yes, they're just like us). The response here was pretty positive as well, with results being pretty consistent with our last poll. As mentioned before, we're aware that we're a bit less active on the forums, and we were eager to see if the poll results reflect that. On average, forum users rated us a bit lower on this question than Discord users, with the average being 4.45 for the forums and 4.61 for the Discord. How strict do you think the mods are as a whole? The vast majority of responses were positive, with a large portion of voters saying that we're neither too strict or too lax. On the whole, these numbers are about the same as in our last survey. What do you think about the way the mods resolve problems and conflicts on the Shard? Here, 1 meant that we only make things worse, and 5 meant we always resolve any issues appropriately. While the results were overall very positive, 50% of you rated us a 4 out 5, so there's still clearly some room for improvement on our end. Several of you gave feedback in the open questions, which we appreciate! How do you feel about our spoiler policy and the way we enforce it? 87.4% of you said that it's fine and we do a good job of enforcing it, which is great to hear! 8.1% of you said that our spoiler policy is too strict, and we understand that complaint. However, we prefer to err on the side of being overly strict with spoilers, because some folks care more about being spoiled than others, and different people consider different things to be spoilers. Up next, Have you ever reached out to the mods? If you haven't, why not? The overwhelming majority of you either have never felt the need to contact us, or have done so, which is great to hear! Which contact methods have you used? and Which contact methods do you prefer? The results for both of these questions were pretty spread out across both platforms. Pretty much all of these methods work great, though keep in mind that for things like bots or scammers, it's preferable to just report them (both platforms) or @staff (Discord) so that we see it and take care of it as fast as possible. Now for the fun question! Who is your favorite 17th Shard moderator? This year, #1 Taln Fan snagged 1st place, with the the previous winner, Argent, in 2nd! LewsTherinTelescope came in 3rd, just barely beating AonEne for a spot on the podium. However, if we sort the results by platform, we see that Argent won 1st place on the Discord, and #1 Taln Fan won the forum vote. And on the forums, AonEne overtook LewsTherinTelescope to claim 3rd place! Last but certainly not least, we asked you all to share your fondest memory from the 17th Shard! We got a lot of great responses, and we loved reading all of them! Here's a few of the responses we got: Jasnah Debate Debate Getting to see so many fresh ideas as hundreds of people worked over each WaT preview chapter on release. It was like a theory supercomputer When Ben ate a shoe A lot of stuff on #you-people, but probably 17th Shard helping me come out When I turned bacon into charcoal and everyone found it funny. Running RPs on the forums Every ping day in #writing is always great, but I really enjoyed a night a month or two ago where a few of us all watched Feather play E33 Every time #you-people becomes #linguistics Thank you to everyone who filled out our survey this year! As a reminder, you’re also welcome to give us feedback at any time during the year if you so please, via any of the various contact methods.16 likes

Today's a huge news day for Cosmere fans: Apple TV has bought the rights to the entire Cosmere, and Brandon has an insane, unprecedented involvement. In an article from Hollywood Reporter, they call the deal "unprecedented," and the first stuff to be adapted would be Mistborn for feature films and Stormlight Archive for television. Brandon will have a level of involvement beyond even J.K. Rowling or George R. R. Martin, where Brandon will be "the architect of the universe; will write, produce and consult; and will have approvals." Brandon commented on this on Reddit, too. He said Apple really wants to be an actual partner with him, and he believes they understand what he wants to accomplish. Apple also does fewer things, but they are higher quality. However, he says he will be working on the Mistborn screenplay for the next five months, full-time. Brandon stated, "I promise not to get too distracted to do books. However, if I want this done right, I need to give some real attention and heart to it now." I am pretty excited that Apple picked this up. They have a ton of awesome sci-fi shows that get a lot of buzz, but they do lack a headliner fantasy series. But, though I certainly want something well done, I am concerned that the level of Brandon's involvement will make getting bigger books like new Stormlight novels harder for him. But, Brandon says he will have a stream Friday at 6pm Mountain to discuss this all, so I hope he comments on his overall schedule with Hollywood stuff long term. I also made a video discussing the news, too! Put your thoughts down below, or in the forum thread on the subject!12 likes

Blightfall, the first book in the new Riftwake trilogy by Brandon Sanderson and Janci Patterson, will release on September 1st! Also: US and UK cover reveals, blurb, and a sample chapter. First off, what's happening? For those who may have missed this until now, Riftwake is a follow-up to the Skyward series, formerly known by the placeholder name Skyward Legacy. It's being co-written by Janci Patterson, co-author of the Skyward Flight novellas. However, Brandon and Janci have clarified that Blightfall is meant to serve as a new entry point, so you don't need to read all those other books first if you don't want to. (I think they're good though!) Context over, time for pretty pictures! Here's the Gollancz cover (UK): And the Delacorte cover (US): Also, Delacorte's first edition will have sprayed edges (shown below) and patterned endpapers (no picture provided): Next up, the description: Random House has also got an excerpt from the first chapter available, which you can read on their website. So yeah, book! (Outros are hard, don't @ me.)8 likes

From 631 to WaT, it's been a full year of memery, theory crafting, and stories. Isles of the Emberdark is just around the corner, and the Ghostbloods counter is ticking up as we look forward to more adventures on Scadrial. We wanted to take this time to say thank you for being a part of our community, and to ask for feedback on your experience here over the past year. What did you enjoy? What can we do better? If you have a few minutes, take our survey and let us know. You can complete as much (or as little) as you want. We're happy to hear from you— and we're looking forward to seeing who you vote for as favorite mod!7 likes

Did you forget about us? At long last we are finally ready to release more episodes of Diceborn, starting Sunday January 25, 2026! For anyone new to the series, Diceborn is the 17th Shard Actual Play Series. Like Season 1, Diceborn Season 2 uses the Mistborn Adventure Game rules from Crafty Games, and is set on Scadrial during Mistborn Era 2, between the events of Bands of Mourning and The Lost Metal. You can check out the Season 1 Announcement for some background and the trailer for the original series, or the Diceborn Season 1 Playlist if you want to catch up or rewatch older episodes. If you haven't already you can also check out our five part limited series set during the time of the Final Empire, Diceborn: Secrets in Stained Glass. Diceborn Season 2 picks up where Season 1 left off with the original cast: @Overlord Jebus as Dervish, @Kaymyth as Hallie, @Comatose as Luka Elariel, @thegatorgirl00 as Marelyn, @WeiryWriter as Royce Hadrial, and Asha Ence (BrambleBerry, @ashaence) as our narrator and Lord Roller. Season 2 was recorded over the course of 2022 to 2024. For context, we started recording Season 2 during the release of Season 1 and before the release of The Lost Metal, and finished recording prior to the release of the new Cosmere RPG from Brotherwise Games. While we are excited about the prospect of releasing Cosmere RPG content in the future, we want to get recorded content out first before embarking on any new actual play projects. It is safe to say the last few years have been a lesson in actual-play production for our team, as we faced challenges in coordinating schedules for recording, and then in handling editing and production workload. Our incredible editor for the season, @FeatherWriter, has spent many hours getting the episodes ready for release, and it is thanks to her we are where we are today. On that note, we are continually adjusting our production process for Diceborn to make more efficient use of our limited editor time while still getting episodes processed and ready for release. Some elements present in Season 1 and in Secrets in Stained Glass, like background music, sound effects, and overlay changes, will lessen and be phased out as Season 2 progresses. The final product for later episodes will be similar to our regular Shardcast in terms of production elements. In order to start releasing episodes after a long hiatus, we also made the decision to split Season 2 into Seasons 2A and 2B. Season 2A consists of 8 episodes, which will be released every other Sunday on the following schedule: Episode 1: 25 January 2026 Episode 2: 8 February 2026 Episode 3: 22 February 2026 Episode 4: 8 March 2026 Episode 5: 22 March 2026 Episode 6: 5 April 2026 Episode 7: 19 April 2026 Episode 8: 3 May 2026 After Season 2, Episode 8, there will be another hiatus. Editing and production on Season 2B will continue, and release will be announced at a later date. The finale of Season 2B will close out the stories of our Diceborn crew for the time being. Any future actual play projects from the 17th Shard, including any CosmereRPG content, will likely be smaller in scale, similar in scope to Secrets in Stained Glass. Stay tuned for further announcements leading up to the Season 2A release, including updated character art by Shuravf, which you can see previewed in the promo image, as well as any streams or live premieres. Like season 1, our backgrounds are by Connor Chamberlain, and the Dice Roller was designed by our very own @Paleo. Thank-you to all the Diceborn fans for your patience. We hope you are as excited as we are to dive back into the story, and roll some dice! See you on January 25th!6 likes

It's a big topic, and one too great to be contained by a single episode. Today we're doing a deep dive on all the info we have about dragons in the Cosmere, talking about lifecycles and abilities. (And a slight diversion into the Spiritual Realm, because who doesn't love a Spiritual Realm diversion, right?) Today's cast includes Eric (Chaos), Ian (Weiry), Evgeni (Argent) and Bonnie (Cosmeregirl). Having seen the smash success of Wordle, we here at the 17th Shard decided to ride its coattails with our own clone release a themed version! The pool of Shardles is hand-filtered by our staff from the titles of Coppermind wiki articles about the Cosmere, Cytoverse, and Reckoners universes, with a new one available at your local midnight each day. (Note that by default you can still guess normal English words to try to find letters, due to the number of recognizable Coppermind titles being so small, but this can be disabled in the settings.) You probably know how the base game rolls by now, so we'll focus on our new features: Explanations: When the answer is revealed, a short one-sentence explanation of the term is shown, along with a link to the relevant Coppermind page for more. If you'd like to guess without potentially getting spoilers, you can disable this in the settings. Time Machine: Travel back in time and play old games! These will not count towards streaks or scores. G L O W: A fancy schmancy glow effect is used to warn about words that are not on the list. More specifically, a red glow means a word is invalid and cannot be guessed, while a yellow glow means a word will be accepted as a guess to help you get more information, but will never actually be the answer. And really, what more do you need than to stare at that mesmerizing pulsing all day? Go play Shardle today! Feel free to share your results on our Discord server, in the Wordle thread under our gaming channel, or share your feedback or issues in the #17s channel! We've also set up a forum thread for you to share your results.2 likes

Yesterday, at a signing at JordanCon, Brandon read out something that was very old, which he said we had been waiting for "for a long time". He thought it was about eight or nine years old. It is crazy, and very exciting. It's a piece called The Traveler which is quite cosmere-aware, which Brandon thought he could now reveal. We recommend you just read it with no further introduction, but if you want some analysis, scroll on down. Get hyped. All of this is transcribed on Arcanum, and you can listen to the audio from the man himself at the links below. Here is Brandon's introduction to this piece: And so, here it is. Note, again, this is a very early draft from a long time ago. The Traveler A focused southern breeze made the trees sound like they were chattering. Tiny crisp leaves spreading the news of the Traveler’s return. Pure white leaves, clustered along branches like skeletal limbs. Even the bark clinging to the trees was white. In some lands, white meant purity; in others, it meant death. Here, it didn’t mean a thing. It was simply, normal. The Traveler sat on the mossy white ground, back to the tree, legs crossed idly as he picked at a pomegranate, eating the seeds one by one then spitting out the pits. They fell on the stark moss-covered ground, leaving red juice like blood running across a sterile white floor. To say he wore rags would have be an insult to many a goodwife who kept her washing rags in much better shape than the Traveler's costume. Ragged brown and black canvas, tattered cloak, and scruffy beard, rubbed dark with a black material that might have been soot — or ash. The leaves suddenly fluttered excitedly behind him, and a strange puff of wind blew across the trunks. A moment later, a figure in simple gray robes walked into the clearing. Clean-shaven and silver-haired, he had the look of an aged scribe, not haughty, but tired. “So, you’re back,” the elderly visitor said. “Did I leave? I am the lingering odor you can never quite locate, my friend. Just when you think I've faded you open your cupboard and find, in an overpowering reveal, that I've merely been… ripening.” “Hmph, that’s a new look for you.” The Traveler looked down at his ragged clothing. “I’ve been learning to blend in. Hard to do that in one of my normal costumes.” “I doubt you’ll ever be the type to blend in.” “You’d be surprised!” “Is that soot in your hair?” “Maybe.” The elderly man sighed, walking across the short clearing and settling himself down on a large protruding tree root. “You can’t keep doing this.” The Traveler continued to eat his seeds, though he had started to chew them up rather than spitting out the pits. “You will just make things worse.” “Ati and Leras are dead,” the Traveler said, picking a piece of seed out from between his teeth. The elderly visitor said nothing, and the Traveler eyed him, leaning in closely, studying the man's eyes. The pupils were rimmed with a silver far too metallic to be natural, at least for a human. “You sly old lizard!” the Traveler said, pointing. “You already knew! You were watching! And here you were chastising me.” “I did NOT interfere,” the elderly man said. ”You meddle in things we promised to leave alone. Things that we—” Traveler held up a finger, interrupting him, then slowly he pointed at the older man. ”I. Made. No. Promise.” “You made your choice. Why now seek for things you so eagerly denied? My friend, it’s the dangerous desire, the lust for power best untouched, that created the situation in the first place.” The Traveler did not reply. The two sat for a time, listening to the winds through the garrulous trees. “Did you… find what you were seeking?” the elder man finally asked. The Traveler shrugged, picking at another seed and nibbling on it. “You will not find a way to restore what you have lost, old friend,” the aged man said softly. ”It is impossible.” “You don’t know that. The old rules no longer hold.” The Traveler turned the pomegranate over in his fingers. ”Besides, I’ve heard of a place… It doesn’t matter. I don’t care. This isn’t about the dead… or it’s not JUST about the dead, at least.” He dropped the fruit to the ground, wiping his fingers on his riding coat. “So it’s a simple vendetta, then,” the aged man said, sighing. “How many years have you lived, and you still can’t learn the wisdom of just letting go?” “A simple vendetta?” the Traveler said. He rose, stalking up to the older man, holding out a finger and touching the man's chest. “You saw what Ati nearly did.” The Traveler leaned down, face even with that of his older companion. “I would not think it MY vendetta that should worry you, old friend.” Isn't that crazy? It's obviously set right after Mistborn Era 1, right after Hero of Ages, with Hoid (the Traveler) talking to Frost. Not only that but it really sounds like they are on Yolen as well. Remember in The Way of Kings, the part two epigraphs were a mysterious letter of cosmere significance? That was sent to Hoid, from Frost. Then, in Words of Radiance, Frost sent a reply. This is crazy. What do you think? Also note, there's lots more JordanCon to transcribe in the JordanCon event in Arcanum. Come help out by signing up for an account, going to the Sources page, and hitting Edit. Come into our Discord in the #arcanum channel and we can help you out, or go here for a guide on how to do that.1 like

We've been wanting to make this episode for a long while and it's finally time. Let's talk about the planet Threnody and the different kinds of evil that stem from there! Today we have Eric (Chaos), Ian (Weiry), David (Windrunner), and Grace (thegatorgirl). Have you heard of the upcoming Stormlight Roleplaying Game? Well, then you've heard wrong because it's been the Cosmere Roleplaying Game this whole time! Yes indeed, as announced today, the Stormlight RPG we've been getting teased for the past few months is actually intended to be encompassing the entire cosmere, with confirmed modules for Mistborn, Elantris, and for playing as worldhoppers - and a promise of more to come in the future. We'll still be getting the Stormlight part first, though. The Kickstarter has gone live a few hours ago, and got funded in all of 11 minutes! We didn't break the website this time (thankfully), but as of this writing, the Kickstarter has already made almost 13 times its intended goal (at this point, we shouldn't be surprised; Stormlight is a certified money printer). If you want to pledge to the Kickstarter and get the goodies, you can do so here! But what are the goodies? The campain offers a lot of different stuff - not just rulebooks for both Stormlight and Mistborn, but also illustrated world guides for both of them, books of pre-made adventures, item cards, custom dice, a game master's screen, maps, tokens and miniatures - all in all, everything and more than you'll ever need to run an RPG campaign on Roshar or Scadrial. It's worth noting that all the physical books also come with digital copies, while all digital copies (if purchased without physical books) also come with virtual tabletop modules, so if you buy one of those, you don't have to get the other separately. Do keep in mind, however, that it's going to be a while before the books release properly - the digital version of the Stormlight rulebook is expected to go out to backers in the second quarter of 2025, while the physical copies will be delivered closer to the end of that year. Mistborn is even further out, with expected fulfillment in 2026. It's not all a dry spell, though - Kickstarter backers get access to the beta preview ruleset, an online character creator, and a starter adventure called Bridge Nine. If you have any more questions, you might get your answers soon! Brandon will be running a livestream along with Johnny O'Neal of Brotherwise Games (the company behind the RPG) tonight! You'll be able to watch it on Brandon's Youtube channel at 6:00 PM Mountain Time (1 AM UTC), and if you have any questions, you can try asking them in the associated Reddit thread. So - big news! What do you think? Are you backing the Kickstarter? Do you have a party ready for some Roshar adventures? Which cosmere world are you most excited to roleplay in? Let us know in the comments!1 like

We got a lot of Shadesmar in Isles of the Emberdark, so there's some stuff to talk about now! This episode is part discussion, but also part explainer for things. Also part pointless arguments on the GODFORGE and the Shadesmar sun, but hey. This episode we have Eric (Chaos), Ian (Weiry), Evgeni (Argent), Jessie (Lady Lameness), and Ene (AonEne)! We have a scoop for you today. Recently, a few of us at 17th Shard got to talk to Brandon, and he had a serious bombshell: he secretly wrote a book. Okay, none of us are shocked but that after the announcement of Bands of Mourning, but what we didn't expect was that the project was actually a fully formed Stormlight novel. Not Stormlight 3, but Stormlight 8. "I've been working on this for a long time," Brandon had said. "I have all the Stormlight books plotted, and it was always the plan to skip certain books. We will get back to Stormlight 3-7 eventually." We questioned further, and discovered the answer was time travel. "Time travel has always been a strong component in the science fiction and fantasy community, and I wanted to do it justice. Temporal magics have a role in the Cosmere, as you've seen with cadmium and bendalloy. I've actually seeded this into the Stormlight novels, if you looked closely." "The Truthwatchers watch every time period," he added. But if this was truly the eighth Stormlight book, how would readers who have just read the first two avoid massive spoilers to the fifth book, which will still be a decisive climax, splitting the Stormlight Archive into two five book series. "Since we are following specific characters into the future, they don't know what happens in book five either," Brandon said. When asked on how it would avoid spoiling who lived and died in books 3-7, Brandon just said, "Yeah, it's a fun first few chapters, when they find it all out." It all makes sense. We're insanely excited to see if Brandon can pull this off. There's no release date for the 500,000 word tome, as it requires rewrites. Brandon joked that Tor may need to invent time travel to develop a machine able to print the massive, door-stopping book. "I want to keep everyone guessing," Brandon said. "The fans, my characters. And now Tor can be added to the list of people guessing what will happen next." When asked if he was simply going mad with power, Brandon cackled and did his best Emperor Palpatine impression. It was comparable to Eric's terrible impression, at least a 7/10. But we are sure that Stormlight 8 will be a 10/10. Though, technically, depending on how you count, it would be a 3/10 or 8/10.1 like

We've been asked about 17th Shard merch for years, and the time has finally come! That's right! Our online store is now open! store.17thshard.com This has been a long time in the making, as we've explored a few different options over the last few years. We're keeping things simple at first with a focus on a few varieties of t-shirts and hoodies that feature some of our core brands: 17th Shard, Coppermind, Arcanum, and Diceborn. The site is organized by product type as well as by design, so you should have no problems finding what you're looking for. We're using a print-on-demand service that lets us ship to USA, Canada, Australia, and most of Europe! We know everyone is excited for Wind and Truth, but is there honestly a better way to read a new Stormlight book than while wearing a cozy 17th Shard hoodie? And if you're searching for a soul mate, we can't promise a Coppermind shirt will help, but we can't say it won't help either. We've tested these out and we're pleased to share them with all of you! If you order in the next few days, you might have your order before Dragonsteel Nexus 2024! Your feedback in all of this is greatly appreciated! If you have any issues or questions about the site, the products, or an order you've placed, you can contact us through the contact form on the store site, or through any of our usual channels. (One thing we're aware of is that order confirmation emails are often going to spam.) This is going to be a bit of a learning experience for us, so we may need to ask for your patience, but we will do everything we can to help you out! Your input on everything from the store to the quality of the products is very valuable to us, so that we can continue to refine what we're offering! If you have any questions, like whether it may be possible to ship somewhere else, we're happy to look into it. If everything goes well, we're excited to explore other items and designs in the future! P.S. A note to our Patrons: If you support us on Patreon at a $5 Scholar tier or above, we have sent you a coupon code! Don't miss it!1 like
