Ara decided to switch her tactic and gave him puppy eyes. “But you can protect us. We can stop her from being bad.”

Nico looked away. "I cannae protect nob'dy, 'Bella. I can't even protect me-self."

“Then we’ll help you! I can kick really hard.”

The serving boy smiled faintly at the idea of Arabella kicking Allivia in the shins, but his smile faded soon thereafter; Alli wouldn't care that Bella was a kid, she'd kill the lass. "She'll kill you, Bella..." he whispered. "You can Katie, and she wouldna even live with a mark on her conscience 'bout it."

"Sarah taught me where to punch people!" Katie frowned. "Though I think those were specifically for boys."

"It doesn't matter our numbers. If there's a problem, it obviously needs to be stopped."

Nico regarded Alienor seriously. "Yer Highness... with all respect due ya, what are you gonna do 'bout it? Iv'an hates you, what power does you even really hold?"

Ara’s face looked more solemn, and she looked up at Nico. “People who kill other people need to be stopped.”

"Yeah, well. She'll only hurt people if I does som'tin' wrong. Wendy tried to help me an' now she's in the medical wing, she is. Iffin' I just keep..." He looked at the little girls and held his tongue. "Iffin' I does what she asks of me, everyone'll be fine."

Nicolae's mouth worked and a tear rolled down his cheek before he said, "No."

“Then don’t,” Ara said softly.

Nico sat down, the poor thing, his face white as a sheet. "Even iffin' I kill me-self," he said, "She'll just find some other poor boy to take. Truth is, that's the only reason I'm still alive."

“Then we need to stop her.” Ara sat down next to him and looked Nico right in the eye. “So she can’t make  you do stuff.”
