During Hoid's retelling of the story The Dog and the Dragon, he mentioned that the story was originally told to him by a barkeeper at an inn that can only be found by the lost.

Is there really an inn like that? Is this just how Hoid chose to add flavour to his story or was this story really told to him by this barkeep? With how the Spiritual and Cognitive Realms work, with how attributes like Connection and Fortune work, with how Visions work... it's actually quite possible that such an inn might actually exist. It was rather suspiciously specific too.

Or maybe it was just a normal barkeep who told Hoid a story when he was feeling lost that he's recounting now to Kaladin? I recall that Hoid mentioned that he once shared a drink with Tanavast...

What do you think?

I think that the barkeep definitely matters, and I think it is literally some sort of magical Fortune/Connection related thing, but I doubt we’ve seen it before. I think it’s just foreshadowing for the future, not really enough to theorize about at the moment.

Unless the barkeep is Kvothe and Brandon is setting up the most epic crossover of all time.

And here I thought it was a shoutout to the people at The Dusty Wheel, or all of the taverns in The Wheel of Time.

I certainly thought it was a shout out to Name of the Wind. Or it could be Silence's tavern if we're looking for Cosmere connections.

I really like the idea that it is a real inn somewhere. It could be wistful thinking, but it would be a really cool place if in the future, Shallan gets herself lost in the Cognitive realm and finds such an inn.

Okay but can you imagine if Rothfuss published Doors of Stone and Hoid was in it? And then he goes "yeah we were planning this the whole time, that's why I took so long and Brandon wrote books so fast, we were trying to match up our timelines" AND THEN

I'm sorry, I think just latched onto this with way too much enthusiasm

I wish this was true, so bad.

I can see something like this actually happening though. Not with Rothfuss and Kingkiller specifically, but another author’s works being suddenly canonized as Cosmere. Brandon does seem to be starting a trend of sorta outsourcing some projects. (See: SotS 2020)

I wish Brandon would do something like this himself honestly. Like, he starts another non-cosmere series, like Reckoners or Skyward or Rithmatist. He is very adamant that it isn’t cosmere, but then, a fair ways into the series, we see Hoid. I’d freak out.

Somebody is going to have to explain that to me, I know it's a song but I've never heard it

The Eagles - Hotel California

I'm 99% sure you've heard it, either in full, in a TikTok, or as a sample in some other more current popular song. It is one of the most listened to songs ever produced.

You should go listen it now.

I also thought Kvothe but we will have to ask Brandon if this was intentional or if he and Rothfuss are drawing on the same spiritual ideal.

Huh, so it's kinda like Wonderwall.

Okay so I gave it a try, it's a nice song and nope, hadn't heard it ever before.

Anyone else think this story is about Honour (the loyal dog) trying to become a dragon (to get his gal Kora to notice him?)

Wait a minute ...

Hoid said Tanavast bought him a beer once ...

And the story he heard was from a barkeep ...

You might be on to something!

Vax is secretly just a shenanigan bar and that's what Hoid was talking about.

Well that would certainly explain why Ati assumed he was there after waking up in a random place with no memory of falling asleep there.

Next thing you know he'll be meeting Sheogorath.

"Aw heck did I get drunk and make out with Leras again? Ugh, Cephandrius probably has unsealed memories of it that've made the rounds five times..."
