Rylan nodded contemplatively, then pointed to himself, speaking in Shangrian elvish.

"I'm not sure if you can understand, but I am called Rylan."

@Tesh @Trutharchivist

Gal barely understood the man, but it sounded like he spoke elvish, though he didn't look like an elf. The last word sounded more like a name than a word.

"Me called Owlson." He said in broken elvish. "Why you speak elvish?" He asked. "You human look." He wondered if he should call Valzwyn. She must know elvish better than him.

Minuet looked back at Ara. "You know, you really shouldn't come."

“Hey, I’d love it if we could all stay together, but if you’re dead set on this silly idea that you’re putting us in danger, then you need me along to make sure you don’t get into trouble without help.” And maybe I can help you with that “I’m gonna get everyone killed” problem along the way.

Cara led Ni around the tower for a little bit, looking for The Shadow. After a little bit, Cara looked out a window and saw The Shadow with Gal, a random person, and a giant dead dragon.

"It looks like The Shadow is outside with a dead dragon." Cara told Ni, wondering if a dead dragon was too gory for him.

Well, I mean if The Shadow lets him stay, he'll probably be seeing some sort of dead animal. Cara thought.

Cara led Ni outside where The Shadow and the scholar person were talking with a random person.

"Hi, The Shadow, um..this is Ni." Cara said, gesturing to Ni. "Can he join our group? He wants to."

@Tesh

Talnic looked to Cara, and the child she called Ni.

"No," he said.

I will not risk the life of a child.

Exodus approached the Shadow.

"Could I have a word before I leave?"

"Firstly, I'd like to mention, if you weren't already aware, that two of your followers will be leaving and aiding me in my quest. Minuet and Ara."

Exodus laughed back at the man. "Why do you even bother? Because of some prophecy?"

Talnic narrowed his eyes at the man. What was Xues even trying to do?

Sighing, Talnic turned and began walking away. There was no point that Talnic saw in furthering the conversation.

"You have no purpose," he called, "you follow a prophecy because you fear the consequences, but you don't know what you're doing."

Exodus stood still and sighed as the so-called leader walked off, shaking his head slightly. Then, he reached out and touched the Shadow's mind.

You have no idea who you're walking away from, Talnic.

Rylan watched the group of newcomers from where he stood, utterly confused. He thought they were saying something about a boat, he wasn't quite sure.

"Owlson," he repeated, pointing to the speaker. "I think this is the language closest to the one you spoke."

He turned to address the small crowd that had gathered at the base of the tower.

"Can any of you understand me?"

Cara's heart fell. She didn't want Ni to leave, but she knew that The Shadow was probably wise to decline Ni's company. The group did seem to get in danger a lot.

Turning back to Ni, Cara said. "Sorry, I guess you can't stay. It's probably for the best. Our group kind of got mixed up with some dangerous stuff."

Ni listened with half an ear to the conversation between Cara and the “not-so-shadow” man. Even though the brief conversation had revolved around him, the boy’s attention had already been drawn away towards the large dragon that lay dead near the base of the tower. The “messy man” from earlier had mentioned there was a dragon outside, but this was Ni’s first time seeing it; the dragon had been on the other side of the tower from where he and Cara had first entered the building.

Stepping away from Cara, Ni quietly moved towards the dragon.

Cara saw Ni moving towards the dragon.

"That dragon kind of tried to kill us, so I can see why The Shadow wouldn't let you join us. There's a weird prophecy that talks about dragons. Our group is trying to fulfill that prophecy I guess. Whatever that means..."

Ni stopped only inches away from the slain dragon’s corpse, staring blankly ahead at the scene before him. The large beast lay sprawled across the ground, frozen amid winter and death with its eyes glassed over like metallic spheres; the empty husk to a creature of legend.

Having stopped near the beast's head, Ni glanced over to his right. Tilting his head slightly, the boy noticed a large gash across the dragon’s neck. A small trail of silvery blood still trickled from the deadly wound, reflecting light as though it were liquid glass. The single stream of the strange blood flowed steadily across the dragon’s torn scales towards the ground, soiling the snow beneath the creature's neck as it turned dark and faded with a strange grey coloring.

Ni reached his hand towards the slain beast, slowly brushing his fingers inside the deep cut slashed across the dragon’s neck.

Retracting his hand, the small boy silently inspected his bloodied fingertips. Dripping with crystalline liquid, Ni slowly rubbed his thumb across his fingers, further spreading the prismatic blood.

"They be busy, thinks I." Said Gal, still speaking bad elvish, though now understanding more. "I know an elf. Will fetch her."

He then goes to the tower. He can't find Valzwyn where he last saw her, so he goes to the library. She's not there, either, but Sef is.

"Sef, we need Valzwyn to help interpret something. Do you know where she is?"

Sef lifts his eyes from the book he was reading. "Did you start fulfilling your duty, young Gal?"

"Not this again." Says Gal. "I know, researching prophecies is important. I've started working on it. But there are things that are far more interesting. Besides, I was trying to talk to someone. Is your elvish good? Because mine isn't."

"Of course my elvish is good." Says Sef. "I'll come to interpret. Searching for mis Valzwyn will be hard, in this tower. She knows all the secret passages, and there are many of those."

Sef and Gal go back down the stairs and go outside, while Gal explains the situation - or, rather, what he knows of it - to Sef.

When they reach the stranger, Sef said in coherent elvish: "Welcome, Rylan. I am known as Sef. What is your wish from those people? And why does a human like you speaks elvish, of all languages?"

I really didn't think until now of the fact that I have a coherent elvish speaker in my pocket... Sorry.

Rylan waved with a single hand, and spoke again in his Elvish, which was similar enough to the newcomer's own tongue. He spoke, making direct eye contact with the newcomer.

"Greetings and salutations, I am Rylan Ryan the Seventh, but am known by many names. Lightsinger, Rivermaker, Dancer from beyond the Edge, Alaladiris, but Rylan will suffice. I arrived just recently, so I know none of these strangers here. I also speak many languages, likely none of which you will understand."

Rylan paused for a moment before continuing.

"Why is a creature such as this slain and left on the ground so carelessly?" He said, gesturing to the corpse a few feet from him.

Sef looks at the dead dragon, then back at Rylan. "I do not know. I believe it attacked the tower, and was slain as a result. What would you have us do? Bury it?" He doesn't sound angry, only curious.

“If it is a dragon, as I have assumed, I would think it would be treated with more... respect.” Rylan spoke inquisitively.
“Most places I’ve been, dragons are revered as the avatars and, occasionally, heralds of the gods. In one empire I’ve been, even the most tyrannical and hated of dragons are built grand tombs and mighty palaces. Rarely are they left dead on the ground...”

Rylan turned to the dragon again, and spoke a short phrase in an alien tongue, nodding to the corpse when he finished. He turned to face Sef.

Visibly wincing at her words, Ni slowly turned to look at Cara. Even with the hood covering his face, the boy’s eyes that were hidden in shadow locked directly with Cara’s. In that one moment, there was a weight behind Ni’s actions; one far beyond that of dragons and innocence.

Wordlessly, Ni turned away from Cara, and stepped back from the dragon.

Moving out of the grey slush and snow, the small boy grabbed a small handful of clean white snow with his left hand, using it to wash away the dragon’s silver blood. Once his hand was cleaned, he dried both hands off on the front of his pants before placing his hands deep inside the pockets of his jacket.

Ni then looked back towards the fallen dragon, standing as motionless and still as the slain creature that lay in front of him.
