The soldier scowled deeper. "Where are your travel IDs?"

"I could go fetch them, sir--sirs," Alex quickly added.

The soldiers glanced at each other. The leader nodded. "Alright. We'll accompany you there."

"Thank you!" Hiiri smiled.

Alex swore to himself mentally.

Davey's mind churned. This was bad. If they went back to the house, with no ID's to show for it...

"They aren't there!" he blurted out, a half-baked plan springing into his mind.

All eyes turned to Davey, including Alex's.

"I... locked them away. In a safe. So they wouldn't get stolen."

Alex tried not to sweat too much.

The soldiers exchanged glances (again), then looked back at Davey. "Alright. Where are they, then?"

"In a safe," replied Davey instinctively. "...place," he hastily tacked on.

"Lead the way, then."

Davey swallowed and climbed down the ladder without argument.

Alex turned to Hiiri and T. "Come on, uhh... Hannah and Tina."

"Okay, I'm coming." She smiles widely, trying to mask her ignorance. If only there were a way to ... do I want these people in my head, no, to be in their heads? You know what, I...I guess I'm okay with it. She reaches out mentally. What do you guys need us to do, Alex, Davey? Do we need to be prepared to fight?

Davey flinched slightly when he heard T's voice in his head. You can telepath?

No, she says dryly. Yes, I can. I can and will stop if you want me to. I'm well aware of the discomfort of having people in your head.

Nonono. This is fine. We need a plan. Alex tried not to smile. Dang, magic is cool. Wait... could you hear that?

Yeah, I heard that, she sent to Alex. I can hear surface stuff but not everything, she relayed to the group. So, a plan? I can control the winds and make force fields.

I don't know! thought Davey frantically. My plan so far is to claim I've forgotten the code to stall for time.

Davey's plan is to say he's forgotten the code, she transmitted to the others. What do the IDs look like? Would there be any way to replicate them? This seems bad, she thought.
