+Hoiditthroughthegrapevine he/him Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 The title says it all, but maybe not emphatically enough. This, my friend, is a moment for supreme reflection. Think about. What are your 3 favorite songs of all times. I swear, by all that is holy in this world (and possibly by all that is holy in the Great Beyond) that I will listen with due attention to all of the songs that are posted here with undivided attention. In a world of noise-some distraction, and meaningless white noise, this is a place to put forward only the best, namely the 3 best songs of all time. In honor of the semi-sacred self-assigned charge, I humbly present to you, the three best songs of all times (ranked, because you should really rank these kind of things): NUMBER 3: Okkervil River Song (by Okkervil River) This song. oh this song. So good. SO UNBELIEVABLY GOOD. NUMBER 2: So Long Marianne (by Leonard Cohen) Possibly the prettiest lyrical ballad ever penned. Actually who am I kidding, this is the prettiest lyrical ballad ever penned. SO GOOD! NUMBER 1: One Way Street (by Mark Lanegan) This is it. The absolute best song EVER MADE. I kid you not. Listen to it at least 50X before you dare to say otherwise. 2
Eluvianii he/him Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 (edited) I really like this l idea, actually, let me join you on that oath. I just listened to yours and the first thing I can say is that we have really different tastes but that only means I have yet a lot of music to listen to. I really liked So Long Marianne. It's something that would fall outside of my comfort zone genre-wise but I might look for more things by the artist. As for my own 3 favorites, that's a painful task. I mentioned it somewhere else but I have an "All Time Favorite Songs" list and it has around 63 elements. Narrowing it down to 3 is like asking me to choose mi favorite child (quantum child, since I don't have kids yet). Still, I have to admit there are a few in that list that have stuck with me more than the rest. Time to put into words exactly why. 3. Muñeca de Trapo - La Oreja de Van Gogh This was my edgy teen song but it didn't lose its shine or appeal with time. Probably the opposite. This band is a master of lyrics, and I know, language barrier, sorry about that but you'll have to take my word for it (or google translate them), and this is one of the best examples. This song is special in several ways. The kind of rock style when it's a pop band. The controversy around the lyrics to the level some fans still refuse to listen to it because it's "satanic". All elements to help tell a simple tale about unrequited love with all the emotions and desperation it needs. 2. Catch the Moment - LiSA This song wouldn't have made the list when I first listened to it three years ago. And don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved it since the first time but it's as if each time I listen to it it gets better. It's the longest case of song addiction I've ever had, to the point I can listen to this every day, sometimes several times, and I won't get tired of it. As for its strong points? Easy. The chord progression is absolutely perfect. It just flows so well each chord seems to exist solely to fit into this song. The arrangement is just as perfect and LiSA's voice is addictive, I really can't get tired of this song. 1. Hoshikuzu - FictionJunction Ok, here's a fact. Yuki Kajiura is an absolute genius. And this is her Magnus Opus. I like to think the range of genres I listen to is pretty broad but if there is such a thing as the perfect style, for me it's hers. No matter what she does, it's amazing and unique and always different from her other works but still instantly recognizable as her work, it's brilliant. And this song. This storming song. Quoting something I heard once, it's as if this song was "ripped out from the world instead of created for it". I mean, seriously, it's like listening to nature itself singing. It's constructed only one note at a time. No chords. Each instrument only one note at a time. But by the end there is such an array of sounds playing in perfect harmony I can't imagine anything ever beating it. It is, plain and simple, the most beautiful song I've had the pleasure of listening to. And that's it. This list will likely, as much as I don't like to think about it, change with time. Lots of songs still to come, but for now, this is what I have. Edited September 20, 2020 by Eluvianii 1
Kelsier'sGodComplex she/her Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 I'm not gonna add videos to mine, but they are easy to find on YouTube, in case you wanna hear them. My favorite songs are: 1.) Play with Fire - by Sam Tinnesz 2.) Paralyzed - by NF 3.) Finale - by AJR 1
Channelknight Fadran Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 My favorite songs are, in fact, from video game OSTs. They change over time, but I'll give you some of my favorites right now: "Want You Gone" from Portal 2 always makes me wanna cry. "The Edge of Dawn" from Fire Emblem: Three Houses. I love it almost as much as I love the game as a whole (almost). "Jump Up Super Star" from Super Mario Odyssey. I'm not much of a jazz person, but this song is an exception. 2

I loved Hoshikuzu too, ethereal and beautiful. The singer's voice reminds me a lot of Maaya Sakamoto, she's sung a lot of anime opening theme songs, and her voice is hauntingly beautiful. Iarwainiel I she/her Posted September 21, 2020 Posted September 21, 2020 I love threads like this - I learn so much from all of you! :-) These are IMO 3 of the most beautiful melodies of all time - disclaimer: they are not pop music, & the photos in the videos are kinda awful so just focus on the audio which is mostly OK. "Abends Wil Ich Schlafen Geh'n" (you can stop at 2 minutes) https://youtu.be/e64mZN6EYY4?t=19 "Ar Hyd Y Nos" (Welsh male choir - a classic) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejxyhtx20sY Brahms - Waltz, Opus 39 # 15 (1 min. 39 sec. - so simple, so exquisite) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Hux5fVzfJg New songs I love but haven't been around long enough for me to call them 'all-time favorites:' "Baba Yetu" and "Sogno di Volare" by Christopher Tin - highly recommended. He also interacts with his fans a lot - reminds me of Brandon in that way. Thanks everyone for posting here! 1
go_go_gragdet Posted September 21, 2020 Posted September 21, 2020 1. Roberta Flack - "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" 2. Michel Legrand - "Les moulins de mon coeur" 3. Ennio Morricone - "Once Upon A Time In The West" (singer is Edda Dell'Orso) 1
Use the Falchion Posted September 21, 2020 Posted September 21, 2020 (edited) I can't do that, simply because my tastes have changed over time and I can't remember every single band or song I've heard, or where I'd rank them. I'll do my current top three for my favorite bands past and present though. Those who can't fit this format will be listed at the top in the "Unlisted" category. I'm 100% sure I'm forgetting bands and people though. TobyMac and Lacrae aren't on here because I frankly can't remember much of their stuff from when I listened to it. I lost my old iPod went missing years ago and most of my old music is tied up with a now-defunct iTunes account. For you, @hoiditthroughthegrapevinelet's just say that my top three are: Lost In the Echo - Linkin Park Reset - Mutemath Running to You - Dabin Shittosarerubeki Jinsei (by Utada Hikaru) and Gimme My Props (by Kool Moe Dee) can round out the experience if you want more things with lyrics, but the first three should cover it. The Unlisted: Kiss Kiss - Chris Brown (formerly in my top three, but no longer) All of the Lights - Kayne West et all. Holy Grail - Jay-Z Who Knows - Jimi Hendrex Polyamory & Dance With the Devil - Breaking Benjamin Colors & Never Coming Home - Crossfade (can you FEEL the angst?!) The One - Mary J Blige The Unforgiven 3 - Metallica 1. Linkin Park (I'm cheating again here and doing my top 5) Spoiler Nothing's Carved In Stone (It's hard to find some of their songs on YouTube) 1. The Fool 2. Out of Control (fans of Psycho-Pass may recognize this song) & Crying Skull 3. PUPA 4. Words That Bind Us 5. (As if it's) A Warning Red Spoiler Coldrain (UNINVITED, AFTERMATH, and A DECADE IN THE RAIN are my three main songs for Warbreaker, with UNIVITED also working as the "trailer song" for the movie in my head...if that makes sense) Spoiler Utada Hikaru Spoiler Bring Me the Horizon: Spoiler Now heading back into the Mid-2000's through 2010 for some nostalgia: Relient K (This band pretty much defined my first few junior high school years, so I'm giving them more leeway than most.) Spoiler Cartel Spoiler Yellowcard Spoiler Sum 41 (So many Naruto AMVs in the early days of YouTube...) Spoiler Paramore Spoiler Rise Against (Historia Calamitatum and The Good Left Undone tie for first place) Spoiler The Fray Spoiler Mutemath (Reset is the song I go to when I need to focus) Spoiler VersaEmerge (On the album, Lost Tree comes right before Father Sky, so I suggest listening to it in that order...actually, I suggest listening to the whole album.) Spoiler Back to (mostly) recent stuff! Aimer Spoiler Drake Spoiler Michael Jackson Spoiler Kool Moe Dee Spoiler Dabin (Running to You is definitely in my current Top 10.) Spoiler Elle Varner Spoiler Chevelle Spoiler Beyonce (I LIKE Flawless, but I always liked Bow Down better. I really wish that they were separate songs outside of her live album) Spoiler DJ Khalid "mixes" (Not included, Murcielago - contrary to what people may think, I'm TRYING to keep this as clean as possible) Spoiler Edited September 21, 2020 by Use the Falchion 1

FriarFritz Posted September 21, 2020 Posted September 21, 2020 1: "Baba Yetu" by Christopher Tin. Greatest piece of music ever written, right there. After that, it's a matter of day-to-day preference for me. For example, right now the other two top spots are "Level of Concern" by tøp and "Warrior" by TREN Other songs that occasionally fill 2&3 include the SSBB theme; "Lost in the Woods" from Frozen II; various songs by John Williams, John Powell, Michael Giacchino, and Hans Zimmer; Megalovania; and probably lots of others that I can't think of right now. 2

BTW, the little Brahms waltz on my list was used in the "Hunger Games: Catching Fire" movie! The scene where Katniss is dancing with President Snow. I was surprised & so happy to recognize it there! @FriarFritz - Agreed re: "Baba Yetu"! An amazing song! Have you checked out TIn's latest? Kasimir he/him Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 I'm going to listen to everything else while I'm doing my work and will come back and comment! On my end: I swap preferences a lot depending on what I've been listening to, so these are my candidates for a stable set of my favourite 3. #3: Estranged - Guns N Roses I've listened to this since I was a teen facing my first break-up. Slash is a guitar god, and I just enjoy the sound of this song. But I also relate to the lostness of the song. There's a certain kind of isolation I suppose. Or of feeling bereft - stranded on the rocks. There's part of the song which goes: Quote Well I jumped into the river Too many times to make it home I'm out here on my own, and drifting all alone My teen self related a lot to that. And I still do. Drowning, being adrift. #2: That Home/To Build A Home - (TEEZ Mashup) The Cinematic Orchestra This might be cheating slightly - That Home and To Build A Home are two separate songs from The Cinematic Orchestra, but I like this particular mashup of them. I first heard To Build A Home via the trailer for NBC's Awake, and I love how peaceful the song is. It makes me think of lazy afternoons: some sun, blue sky. It makes me think of halcyon days that have come and gone, of nostalgia and my childhood home. It's peaceful, but also sad. #1: Anthem - Leonard Cohen I love how the song sounds. It's probably my favourite Leonard Cohen, partly because of what the song's about. I regard it as being about the fundamental brokenness of things, of the world. It's about imperfection, about hope and letting the light in, even though the world is the way it is. I don't know, it just speaks to me very deeply. 1

There's a definite through line in your top 3 and I think I have some pretty good recommendations for you spoilered below. Spoiler Spoilered below are some of the best but slightly obscure Leonard Cohen songs. Spoiler True Love Leaves No Traces (from the Album Death of a Ladies Man, that Phil Spector produced and employed his signature Wall of Sound technique on. Cohen Described the results as Grotesque, and he actually tried to get the master tapes back from Spector but Phil had a loaded crossbow on him at the time and convinced Leonard to leave). This is such a pretty song! The Story of Isaac from Songs From a Room. The Future, from the album The Future (seems very prescient in the times we are living in, but also this has some adult themes, you have been warned): Dance me to the End of Love from the Album Various Positions, so pretty! Take this Waltz from the Album I'm your man. The lyrics are based on Lorca's poem "Pequeño vals vienés" (Little Viennese Waltz). Such an amazing song! Waiting for the Miracle, from the album The Future, this was featured in the Oliver Stone movie Natural Born Killers: I think that Mark Lanegan is the working man's Leonard Cohen, the muse of the late night shift, the lets dampen the poetry down a touch to get past all of the BS, and let's just focus on the real stuff but find the beauty in that. Spoilered below, holy crap, are songs that you will have wished you had known about earlier, because life is ultimately too short, and these songs are ultimately too good. Spoiler Mark Lanegan was the singer/lyricist for the band the Screaming Trees, and especially with Sweet Oblivion they really were pretty amazing. This is one of my favorite songs of all times, Julie's Paradise from the Trees' album Sweet Oblivion. Judas Touch, From Mark Lanegan's first Solo Album, Whiskey For the Holy Ghost, which I have to say is my favorite album of all times. This song is short, but Oh lord, it's so GOOD! Also from Whiskey For the Holy Ghost, Carnival. Such a good song. And one more from Whiskey for the Holy Ghost, Sunrise. One of the absolutely prettiest songs ever made. Period. Deus Ibi Est, from the album Ballad of the Broken Seas. This album is amazing, it's Lanegan paired with Isobell Campbell (from Belle and Sebastian) and the extreme contrast of their voices is so amazingly good: Also from Ballad of the Broken Seas, one of my all time favorite songs to listen to when I'm depressed. Hey, it happens, and it's nice to have a soundtrack to the misery you sometimes feel. Revolver. So hauntingly beautiful. If you like Mark Lanegan, he just came out with a memoir, SIng Backwards and Weep, that is absolutely amazing. If you like audio books it gets even better, because he actually reads the book himself with his smoke cured, deep basso voice. His was a hard life for sure, but it's a truly amazing book. 2

Mwahaha! I could easily post three songs of length 20+ minutes! I won't, though...or will I? In no particular order: Paradise Lost by Symphony X: A song based on part of the John Milton poem. I'm a sucker when songs about literature are "done right" Plains of Forever by Keldian: A somewhat meditative song to calm the existential anxieties of the soul La Cantata Del Diablo por Mägo de Oz: gotta include at least one 20+ minute song after my threats This also seems to be very relevant to 2020 US, so it took the place of another Mägo de Oz song from the same album. 1

That is absolutely one of the best songs of all times, but its equal is actually the song I had playing in a boombox when I proposed to my wife. I know if you haven't heard this already it will be one of your all time favorite songs. Beautiful melodies and beautiful lyrics. I don't have a specific general recommendation for you, so I'm just going to give you recommendations based on each song. 1) Die for you/Gravity, this is from a band I'm sure you know but there's a sci-fi theater through line here, Black Star by Radiohead: 2) Richochet, this is purely thematic, but this is one of my favorite songs of all times, Revolver by Mark Lanegan and Isobell Campbell (I know I recommended it earlier in this thread, but it's so good it's worth a second recommendation: 3) Satellite, this again is purely a thematic recommendation, but holy crap this is one of the best songs ever made by one of the most talented songwriters who has ever lived, Elliot Smith's Satellite: @Orlion the Platypus, you cantankerous platypus you! I did it, I finally found the time to listen to your whole playlist. The songs were amazingly good, but this reminds me of the time when I went to a party at college and put on this song: Even the crickets stopped chirping. I'll always click on your posts, you are one of the true authentic voices on the shard. At heart I'm a grouser just like you. Kindred spirit. This is my second favorite of your songs. There is a melodic through line between these songs that makes me think you also love Chris Cornell. If that is the case, I have a special treat for you, a somewhat obscure Alice In Chains song featuring some vocals by Chris Cornell, the song Right Turn from the EP Sap. Such an amazingly beautiful song. If you are as suitably impressed with the beauty of that song as you should be, you should really listen to the best song off of that EP, and possibly the best song by Alice in Chains, Brother: On 9/24/2020 at 7:22 AM, Orlion the Platypus said: La Cantata Del Diablo por Mägo de Oz: gotta include at least one 20+ minute song after my threats This also seems to be very relevant to 2020 US, so it took the place of another Mägo de Oz song from the same album. I expect nothing less from you, I have 2 years of high school spsnish, but the message is crystal clear, hell in a handbasket. This was by far my favorite of your songs. Post your other favorite 20 minute songs and I will gladly listen to them! One of my favorite songs of all times could be broken up into smaller chunks, but i like to listen to the whole thing like it's one song, kind of like a novelette in song.
