"Definitely... different. For one thing, there's absolutely no privacy. Also, the boys tended to stay together, so it wasn't like always having friends, like some people describe it."

"Is it really all bad? I mean, you don't have to worry about marrying into some noble house to carry on the family name."

"That's true. I don't think it was all bad, but at times it felt like it was all bad."

Leonie nodded. "What about you, Ash? What kind of family do you come from?"

@Vapor

Ash shifted. "I didn't really come from a family," he said. "At least, not the way you would think of one."

Ros makes his way into the eating hall, looking as if he wasn't able to get much sleep. He gets what food he can, and then sits down near enough to watch and listen, but far enough that he believes that he won't be noticed before eating.

Crescendo looks inquisitively at Ash. "How?"

"What do you mean?"

"My only family was a small gang," Ash said uncomfortably. "Living on the streets."

"What?" Leonie asks, then thinks for a minute. "Did you... know anybody named Voh?"

"No. Sorry."

Just as everyone is finishing, Selia walks in, yawning over her book, and absentmindedly grabs the plate of pancakes with her right hand, then drops it back onto the table, wincing. She puts her book under her arm and picks up the plate with her other hand, then over to a table and starts eating.

Edit: I just realized I was thinking of it being cafeteria style. So that's wrong. Pretend the servants left a plate or two out for people or something.

Ros looks up when Selia enters the room, he gave a slight bow of his head before returning to his thoughts, looking quite perplexed.

She hasn't gone yet.

Crescendo picked up her plate and walked into the kitchen. A couple of minutes later, she walked out with a glass of milk. She walked up to the table and sat down again.

Ros looked up as Crescendo left, he took on a nervous look until Crescendo came back, after which he adopted an embarrassed look. He then took the opportunity to pick up his plate and utensils and head for the kitchen.

Selia would approve of the flirting, but she's too busy trying to eat and read at the same time without using her right hand too much.
