some thoughts

So Hi im new here first off i doubt there is still a need for spoilers? but this post has a few, so have some personal reading history! Always been a fan of wot since primary school and when BWS? took over felt I might as well read mistborn! I was actually pretty impressed with mistborn he took it way further then i expected him to at the start and a couple of twists i didnt even see coming! Later on i was looking for free books on my phone when i came accross WOK, which wasnt free but i couldnt help myself. After reading it, i read it again, then i went and got elantris, was so impressed i looked on the website and found warbreaker which was free and also the liar of partinel sample and the short stories ofc lol! (which was good cos i had just spent the last of my money on elantris hehe). Whilst looking about the site i somehow accidentally clicked on the site and have spent a little time browsing the forum now, the first thing i learnt was Hoid wasnt just his favorite name he liked to slip in books and alot of thoughts i had about these books came together lol, didnt actually think he would plan a whole little universe so after spending a few hours trying to make sense of what the forum was telling me (ye i didnt notice the pinned ones at the top which where somewhat more useful then some of the other threads i ended up reading! tho not more entertaining ofc). Then i decided to reread WOK and after a couple of chapters looking at it with new eyes had a couple of thoughts. If your still reading this now then there is a chance u might know some of the answers i dont and can explain things im unclear on! Would much appreciate it tho some of the things may already be answered elsewhere :/ Anyway hope you enjoyed my little story here is a couple of the thoughts i had! :

1. is cultivations pool in or near the purelake?

2.what kinda crazy oathpact is honour got himself into where his 10 favorite guys get tortured for thousands of years? and how come taln still came back even after honour has been dead for so long?

3. thunderclasts come from stone, is this why shins dont like stone? i mean i wouldnt wanna walk on stone if a thunderclast might happen to pull itself free right under me.

4.are dustbringers like anti knights radiant? just destorying stuff?

5. what happened to all those swords? where they left there just somewhere? can ppl pull them out? surely this woulda been noticed...

6. how come the shardplate the kalak was looking at didnt glow?

7.odium is clearly bound as well by the oathpact but when it was broken hasnt done anything, is it like limiting the number of forces he can use in their little fight or something? bit of a random guess there.

8. kalak uses the term east not stormward, and no spren are mentioned, is this important or is it just to ease the reader into it kinda thing?

9. same for spren none are mentioned and its a battle

10. why couldnt other honourable ppl just get told to come along grab the sword run off to get tortured and save the world? dalinars visions suggest the almighty was alive for some of them and most are a fair bit after the heralds so surely he was still around then?

11. is endowments focus colour?

12. szeth also names it east it could again be cos the reader doesnt know about storms and how important they are to the ppl of roshar but if its not for that (sometimes reading this makes me look too deeply into things because im sure he has a load of secrets i wont guess!) is it because shin dont really suffer from storms and the term east is perhaps a remnant of their cultural heritage?

13.i forget what jasnah is doing when gavilar is assassinated and cant remember if it is mentioned but why isnt she studying the parshendi? (i think it probably is but its alot of book to look thru and someone might remember!)

14.szeth thinks elhokars companions at this feast are unimportant, does this mean that really they are very important to any1 reading but not szeth? an azish with a pale patch of skin on his cheek is pretty distinctive, altho a nervous alethi isnt so much does any1 remember them showing up anywhere else in the book?

15. why is it profane to use stormlight for illumination but not for lashing stuff randomly?

16. parshendi have a tradition of a killer wearing white, This post has been reported for attempting to skirt the rules? they have traditions of sending killers? and are seriously honourable about it? judging from what we have seen about how they act they all seem to act in pretty much unison so what requires one to send a killer so often that they have a tradition about it?

17. why are there torches in the passageway to the kings chamber? there are stormlight lights all over the place but torches there? torches arent particularly pleasant anyway they give off less consistent light and smell bad!

18.i kinda think stormlight is a little like the dor, i mean come on, both are white.

the dor seems to be a shards power trapped (in shadesmar?) trying to get into the physical realm thru bridges and the like, whereas stormlight seems to be able to do similar things but isnt a huge force trying to push thru and is instead spread thinly accross the land with the storms every now and then, dunno just kinda rambling now ignore that bit!

19. are seons like nightblood? the whole type 4 thing? something that wasnt living given life and sentience? just made differently obviously, with aons not commands and are spren? the conscious sentient ones? they seem to have been around before the normal mindless bunch.

20. szeth claims stormlight can only be held for a few minutes yet when kaladin is climbing up the chasm wall (if i remember correctly) he goes 15 minutes holding his breathe with it, using the most stormlight consuming lashes, whereas szeth is surrounded by brightly glowing lamps and needs to refuel on a permanent basis. Can kaladin hold more because of his bond which has started with syl? or does he just have more? i would assume the lamps give more then his limited supply that is always being talked about? he appears to do ever better with it after saying the words, if he gets to full knight radiant will he be able to hold it in perfectly like said voidbringers?

21. This post has been reported for attempting to skirt the rules are voidbringers doing holding stormlight, just a myth gone wrong or do they really also hold stormlight? if they do is it just honours power or is it more then that?

22. szeths punishment demands voidbringers dont exsist but his honour demands they do, does this mean that he took up these powers because he believes they would return and is so punished for doing so by having to carry the shardblade and made lower then even a warrior until(unless) they do return?

23.how do the parshendi know what szeth was he doesnt seem like the type to let ppl know he is a shardbearer or did the parshendi jsut ask some really lucky questions? (ye i dont rly expect loads of answers)

24.szeth lashes himself to a distant point and that distant point becomes down, so he can lash himself like he can objects? this makes flying easy right? you literally just fall where u feel like falling...

25.things frost up when he uses stormlight, is this any relationship to the frostlands that used to be natanatan? it didnt seem like a cold place when dalinar went there (i think he went there :/) was that some massive use of power?

26. why do shardblades kill so weirdly? i mean the eyes appear to be important on roshar, seems that the power given by a shard shone thru their eyes so is there something significant about the fact the smoke burn then blacken? thats abit creepy.

27.is urithiru in the misten mountains? aimia jsut doesnt seem right :/

28. szeth seems to know what voidbringers look like...isnt this important? jasnah rly wants to know and szeth a truthless could just tell her :/ does that mean all the shin know? or just the religious parts, perhaps maybe jsut a myth i dunno.

29. ok this one is abit of a random one you may wanna just skip. I dont understand szeths comment, his lashings interfered with the gems that power the shardplate. I could understand if wearing shardplate would be annoying cos he couldnt lash himself (if that applies to oneself as it does to lashing other ppl in shardplate) but how do his lashing specifically interfere with the gems? I dont know if i look too much into BWS wording but i assume that if it was drawing in stormlight that drew in the gems in the shardplates and made it unusable he would have worded it differently, but i dont see how his lashings could interfere specifically with the gems :/ the windrunners knight radiants wear shardplate that glows and i would assume they wouldnt bother if it cancelled out their abilities, altho it stops glowing as soon as they take it off so perhaps the glow is from them and now the plate itself, but then where do they have the power to do that? they dont glow with stormlight as they walk off and dalinar doesnt seem to suck in stormlight to increase his plates function, is there other ways to power them?

30. dalinar glows when he goes to protect elhokar from the chasmfiend, he also moves faster then a man in shardplate should and stops a chasmfiend which has been noted for its size and ability to crush a man even in shardplate, it seems the shardplate gives dalinar extra strength and speed (when he was on his way to protect his brothers son and kingdom which he may or may not have sworn an vow to do, i cant remember, if he did then is it just because he wanted to protect or because he swore he would protect them and needed it to keep up his vow?) does any1 know anything more about what order he is aiming towards? and how come he gets visions now and not before, is it because he went abit honour crazy after gavilars death and only now is at the point where he is truly honourable enough to get these visions? why doesnt kaladin? whats special about dalinar how does it know he leads?

31. fabrials use stormlight and spren to work...do spren consume stormlight?

32. gavilar is useless, he gives away nothing baout anythingl....why did he have that sphere and how did he get it? why is it too late? obviously thats nothing to do with the sphere cos he is still worried about them getting it any1 know what plans he has set in motion whilst preparing for assassins for months? why are ghostbloods called ghostbloods, is there a reason for the name?

33. who got his shardblade, how come elhokar didnt?

34. talns scar in the sky sounds pretty suspiscious. but i guess stars can look like that.

35. axies(?) the collector has some weird magic, that doesnt seem related to the knights radiant or heralds in any way...whats he got?

36. ok this is alot on spren i dont rly get them

the spren he sees, i have the book on my phone so finding quotes and lines is hard so this is all from memory forgive me if i miss something about this one and get it all wrong. i assume it arrives precisely at that time because it has been recorded as doing so? how far can recording or measuring a spren really go? is it now stuck unable to go very far because it needs to get back to that spot every day or do spren travel in different ways? i mean when syl went to go look for that leaf she appeared to have to physically go out find one pick it up and carry it back? and considering its size it is possibly unique and somewhat sentient so does that not give it some measure of leeway? i mean if someone wrote down syl-ribbon of light whilst she was a ribbon of light would she be stuck that way? or have the ability to say no? other spren that dont seem conscious seem to appear and disappear whenever they like however it seems odd to imagine millions of all kinds of spren floating around invisible just looking for a fire to pop into sight around or some nice tune. but then how do they appear it the right times? are all spren that arent conscious like one type of spren that changes in accordance to nearby strong stimuli? or are they like manifestations of residue power that are created by strong stimuli and then fade away when it does? but then that doesnt rly explain fire i guess... could syl (as a spren) have her personality measured at like a grumpy time and be stuck as grumpy for the rest of her life? but then i guess that wouldnt be very specific.

spren arent affected by gravity and appear to have no mass but visually they are there somehow? whenever they wanna be? wind spren are said to be zipping infront of and behind the highstorms in the wind, but presumably they arent actually effected by the wind? how do they know its there and why do they want to go that way?

how is it they know what people are feeling...they react to strong emotions and can read minds right?does this mean some shards can read minds and some cant? nightblood can so can endowment also read minds? and I only read it quickly the once before i knew it rly was all one big universe but does he talk in the mind of drabs? vivenna might have been a drab at one point actually when he was speaking to her :/ cant remember but it would mean something if he could only talk to people with breathe! (which means they hold a part of endowment right?) maybe im just grasping at straws... :/

do spren speak in peoples minds? like syl doesnt have a voicebox, but does she ever actually speak to any1 but kaladin? i know she can become visible to them (btw selective invisibility thats quite an awesome power she has?) but does she ever actually talk to them or does she always jsut talk in kaladins head? and how come he knew the oaths? isnt that pretty big? what told him? did syl imprint it on his mind somehow? or something else?

larger spren can mimic voices This post has been reported for attempting to skirt the rules?

37.if the purelaker religion has any basis on roshar in the shards it suggests that shards cant read minds here.

which one do they now pretend to worship?

anyway ye thats my first few thoughts reading the intro bit think i got abit carried away with thinking but if u made it this im glad u paid attention to them! lol didnt realise it was all so big and my typing is pretty bad im sry im not overly big on caps or punctuation in all the right places and things... sry :)

oh right ye errr about the shin and knowing stuff, i reckon the stonewards and windrunners went mostly that way, would explain how he knows how to use it and maybe why stone shamans are called stone shamans.

oh and are chasmfiends related to the unmade?

one last thing, hoid or midius learnt lightweaving in a week to a skill level that he could converse with it? was i reading that wrong or has no1 else apparently ever figured out this lightweaving that seems to work in all worlds?

So many questions. o.o;

I can't answer them all, so I'll hit one that jumped out at me - #3.

Shins don't dislike stone, they think very highly of it. Why they do so, I'm not sure, but one of the reasons why they might find it disrespectful to walk on stone is because Shinovar is the only place on Roshar that has a proper regolith, including soil.

This may also be why they don't use the term "stormward" and use "east" instead. They get rain, not storms.

11. is endowments focus colour?

lol, this one is kind of outta the blue after all that SA stuff, but it's an easy one. colour isn't the focus, the commands are.

20. szeth claims stormlight can only be held for a few minutes yet when kaladin is climbing up the chasm wall (if i remember correctly) he goes 15 minutes holding his breathe with it, using the most stormlight consuming lashes, whereas szeth is surrounded by brightly glowing lamps and needs to refuel on a permanent basis. Can kaladin hold more because of his bond which has started with syl? or does he just have more? i would assume the lamps give more then his limited supply that is always being talked about? he appears to do ever better with it after saying the words, if he gets to full knight radiant will he be able to hold it in perfectly like said voidbringers?

i think kaladin uses stormlight more efficiently because he is becoming a radiant, and because of Syl. though i don't think that he'll ever hold it perfectly. even the radiants from dalinar's vision leaked the occasional bit of stormlight, iirc.

31. fabrials use stormlight and spren to work...do spren consume stormlight?

i think we can see from Shallan's first soulcast that spren use stormlight in order to do... whatever it is they're doing. in the case of soulcasting, they're using it to transform, for windrunners, like kaladin, the spren uses the stormlight to give people lashings. or so i presume. syl also increases kaladin's ability to fight.

whew, that was a lotta reading. so many of your questions are RAFO things, i think, you might have to live with some delayed gratification here. i've replied in bold where i thought i could help clarify.

I don't have time to respond to all of them right now, but I'll get there. One thing though:

one last thing, hoid or midius learnt lightweaving in a week to a skill level that he could converse with it? was i reading that wrong or has no1 else apparently ever figured out this lightweaving that seems to work in all worlds?

That's not surprising. Magic can work on any world. If a Mistborn somehow made it to Roshar, the Metallic Arts would still work.

The Dor would be harder to use on other worlds, because it is so based in location, but Brandon said that given sufficient knowledge of magic, you could get them all to work on any given world.

1. is cultivations pool in or near the purelake?

Maybe. I doubt it though. The pools that we've seen so far have been very limited in size. Preservation's wasn't very big, and neither was Aona's in Elantris.

2.what kinda crazy oathpact is honour got himself into where his 10 favorite guys get tortured for thousands of years? and how come taln still came back even after honour has been dead for so long?

I think the Oathpact was, basically speaking, that the Heralds would be able to be tortured for time and all eternity IF they were allowed to come back and help the earth through the Desolations. Taln still comes back because he died during the last desolation, unlike the other Heralds who went into hiding. So, he was still connected to the Oathpact, and so he came back for the Final Desolation

3. thunderclasts come from stone, is this why shins dont like stone? i mean i wouldnt wanna walk on stone if a thunderclast might happen to pull itself free right under me.

I agree with what has been said above. Shin just find it sacred, because you have to work to find it. It may have orginally had something to do with the thunderclasts though.

4.are dustbringers like anti knights radiant? just destorying stuff?

No, my impression was that Dustbringers were Knights Radiant. But that's my gut speaking, and I don't want to find a quote.

5. what happened to all those swords? where they left there just somewhere? can ppl pull them out? surely this woulda been noticed...

We haven't been told that all of them are swords. I'd imagine some were pilfered, but a better guess would be that they were made into a memorial that eventually eroded, and they are lost somewhere now.

Or perhaps, since they're made of eternal material, they are at the bottom of the Chasms, and are what actually caused the chasms. But that's a random idea.

6. how come the shardplate the kalak was looking at didnt glow?

My theory on this is that Shardplate only glows when the person in the armor has made certain connections/committments with the armor. Perhaps they haven't made the right bonds yet? Or maybe it doesn't come till later. This may very well be related to the Nahel Bond that Nohaden talks about.

7.odium is clearly bound as well by the oathpact but when it was broken hasnt done anything, is it like limiting the number of forces he can use in their little fight or something? bit of a random guess there.

I think the fact that only one Herald came back has something to do with the long time since the last desolation, but I'm not sure.

8. kalak uses the term east not stormward, and no spren are mentioned, is this important or is it just to ease the reader into it kinda thing?

I think that Kalak uses the term East and not Stormward just to make more sense to the reader. Also, I don't think that there are any spren yet either (besides Nahel Bond Spren). If you notice, you see that in the Knight Radiant Abandonment vision, you see that the men complain about it being winter for a "whole 8 weeks", but you don't see any spren.

I think that the normal spren are a result of Honor dying, as he died after the Knights Radiant were no more, and we don't see any spren until after the Knight Radiants are gone.

9. same for spren none are mentioned and its a battle

See above.

10. why couldnt other honourable ppl just get told to come along grab the sword run off to get tortured and save the world? dalinars visions suggest the almighty was alive for some of them and most are a fair bit after the heralds so surely he was still around then?

Because there's some power with the Heralds. I don't know if it was given to them, or if it is inherent, but these people are extremely powerful people, who are able to turn back the tides of Darkness back, and end the Desolations, time after time after time. I also think that Odium (if it is him) is not in the mood to make another Oathpack.

11. is endowments focus colour?

Hmm.. Maybe. There's different theories on Focus, Fuel, and Power. Some people think so. Some people think that there is something special about the Tears of Edgli, the flowers that provide most of the color for Hallandren.

12. szeth also names it east it could again be cos the reader doesnt know about storms and how important they are to the ppl of roshar but if its not for that (sometimes reading this makes me look too deeply into things because im sure he has a load of secrets i wont guess!) is it because shin dont really suffer from storms and the term east is perhaps a remnant of their cultural heritage?

I bet that Szeth would see it more as east because he doesn't deal with storms as much as those of not-shin would. I think east is the official term, but stormward is more common, just because that's what that is- the way that the storm will be coming.

13.i forget what jasnah is doing when gavilar is assassinated and cant remember if it is mentioned but why isnt she studying the parshendi? (i think it probably is but its alot of book to look thru and someone might remember!)

I don't know what she's doing. I'd assume that she probably isn't studying the Parshendi, as it seems to be a fairly recent thing for her interests. She's probably studying some other historical record.

Nope. I don't remember them anywhere else. I personally think that they may be Selians, but that's just me...

15. why is it profane to use stormlight for illumination but not for lashing stuff randomly?

I think it might be profane for him to lash things- but he's truthless. He has no honor, and so must do what his masters say.

Or it may just be that they are using this incredible, powerful force as a light. I suppose it might be like creating cold fusion, and using it to power your house. Just a total waste, and a disrespect to the power of cold fusion.

16. parshendi have a tradition of a killer wearing white, This post has been reported for attempting to skirt the rules? they have traditions of sending killers? and are seriously honourable about it? judging from what we have seen about how they act they all seem to act in pretty much unison so what requires one to send a killer so often that they have a tradition about it?

They seem to be in union now- maybe that wasn't always the case though.

17. why are there torches in the passageway to the kings chamber? there are stormlight lights all over the place but torches there? torches arent particularly pleasant anyway they give off less consistent light and smell bad!

Chance. Probably.

Ignored.

19. are seons like nightblood? the whole type 4 thing? something that wasnt living given life and sentience? just made differently obviously, with aons not commands and are spren? the conscious sentient ones? they seem to have been around before the normal mindless bunch.

Perhaps. The only difference seems to be that Nightblood was an object that was added sentinence, and Seons seem to be naturally sentinent (although it may require a connection with a human), and Old Spren seem to be naturally sentinent, when it makes a Nahel Bond.

However, I think Nightblood is very different because he was hand-made rather than shard-made.

20. szeth claims stormlight can only be held for a few minutes yet when kaladin is climbing up the chasm wall (if i remember correctly) he goes 15 minutes holding his breathe with it, using the most stormlight consuming lashes, whereas szeth is surrounded by brightly glowing lamps and needs to refuel on a permanent basis.

I've always thought that Kaladin is more efficient at using his stormlight than Szeth, and that's due to the Words that he's said.

21. This post has been reported for attempting to skirt the rules are voidbringers doing holding stormlight, just a myth gone wrong or do they really also hold stormlight? if they do is it just honours power or is it more then that?

One theory that has been said that Parshendi are like the Kandra- they are technically "Of Odium" but live a "Honorable" life. Or maybe Odium changed the prophecies so that the Parshendi are the Voidbringers. I don't know.

25.things frost up when he uses stormlight, is this any relationship to the frostlands that used to be natanatan? it didnt seem like a cold place when dalinar went there (i think he went there :/) was that some massive use of power?

I doubt it. I bet that climates have changed dramatically in the past thousand years or so.

26. why do shardblades kill so weirdly? i mean the eyes appear to be important on roshar, seems that the power given by a shard shone thru their eyes so is there something significant about the fact the smoke burn then blacken? thats abit creepy.

Perhaps what Shardblades do is that they cut through the Spiritual Aspect of objects. For non-sentient beings, that means that they sever the spiritual bond (the electromagnetic force. It says in the back of the book that gravity is a spiritual bond, so the theory holds) that holds objects together. However, when it meets a sentient being (even if it is only barely sentient like a Great Shell), it cuts through the soul instead. This separation of the soul makes the eyes (window to the soul) burn.

28. szeth seems to know what voidbringers look like...isnt this important? jasnah rly wants to know and szeth a truthless could just tell her :/ does that mean all the shin know? or just the religious parts, perhaps maybe jsut a myth i dunno.

Where does it say this in the text? I don't remember this.

29. ok this one is abit of a random one you may wanna just skip.

Perhaps at the Highest Levels of the Knights Radiant, you yourself become a conduit for the power of Honor, and that power flows through you into the Shard Plate, and yet you can still use it to fight.

30. dalinar glows when he goes to protect elhokar from the chasmfiend, he also moves faster then a man in shardplate should and stops a chasmfiend which has been noted for its size and ability to crush a man even in shardplate, it seems the shardplate gives dalinar extra strength and speed (when he was on his way to protect his brothers son and kingdom which he may or may not have sworn an vow to do, i cant remember, if he did then is it just because he wanted to protect or because he swore he would protect them and needed it to keep up his vow?) does any1 know anything more about what order he is aiming towards? and how come he gets visions now and not before, is it because he went abit honour crazy after gavilars death and only now is at the point where he is truly honourable enough to get these visions? why doesnt kaladin? whats special about dalinar how does it know he leads?

Dalinar is more of a Leader than Kaladin is I feel. Kaladin's more of a protector, but Dalinar really wants those who are following him to do the right thing. I have no clue what order he's headed toward (especially since we only have one Order name right now).

31. fabrials use stormlight and spren to work...do spren consume stormlight?

In a way. I believe that Spren are a "gate" to the power. (Sort of like how metal is the gate in Mistborn). You give the spren power, and then they transfer it into what you want.

But then again, in Shin, where there are no Storms, there aren't any spren.

32. gavilar is useless, he gives away nothing baout anythingl....why did he have that sphere and how did he get it? why is it too late? obviously thats nothing to do with the sphere cos he is still worried about them getting it any1 know what plans he has set in motion whilst preparing for assassins for months? why are ghostbloods called ghostbloods, is there a reason for the name?

RAFO

33. who got his shardblade, how come elhokar didnt?

I'm not sure. I think Adolin might have, since Elhokar already had his own Shardplate.

35. axies(?) the collector has some weird magic, that doesnt seem related to the knights radiant or heralds in any way...whats he got?

Perhaps he has what the Returned had, but in an easier way to mess around.

36. ok this is alot on spren i dont rly get them

My guess? Spren can't read minds. They may be able to sense emotions, but that's a whole different ball game than reading. I think one of the Great Shard Laws is that Shards can't read minds. I don't know why, but they can't. They can change and push people's minds, but they can't actually read them.

Nightblood can read minds because that's what he essentially is- pieces of humans.

37.if the purelaker religion has any basis on roshar in the shards it suggests that shards cant read minds here. which one do they now pretend to worship?

I bet that they pretend to worship Odium instead of his brother Honor. Or that's what it originally was.

one last thing, hoid or midius learnt lightweaving in a week to a skill level that he could converse with it? was i reading that wrong or has no1 else apparently ever figured out this lightweaving that seems to work in all worlds?

Brandon has said that all magics should be able to work on other planets. However since we haven't had a good description of Lightweaving yet (and what we do have isn't cannon), we'll have to go with what we got.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for your quick responses and help guys, esp zas! it is frustrating with so many hints and yet knowing so little! lol

btw in my book it says that at least the 9 that are left in a ring are swords specifically!

i got that szeth knew more about voidbringers then most ppl seem to because of this thought "according to legend, the shardblades were first carried by the knights radiant uncounted ages ago. gifts of their god granted to allow them to fight horrors of rock and flame, dozens of feet tall, foes whose eyes burned with hated. The Voidbringers. When your for had skin as hard as stone itself..." it seems to be a whole lot more accurate then any information shown by other races we see

about the lightweaving i just meant that it seemed rather easy to learn if it took him a week to master it and can use it all over the worlds, i figured that magic would work other places if you had a part of the shard in you/with you but surely ppl in world would have figured out this lightweaving at some point? it has been thousands and thousands of years and hoid goes all over the place and never shares not even with sigzil who seems to like stories but never makes them shiney? seems selfish! lol but ye i realise it was sample chapters so cant really be relied upon as truth!

ahh i could be remembering this wrong but i think that dalinar said he won elhokars plate and blade from the parshendi which was after gavilar died right? and adolin got his from his mothers side of the family i think

also about the purelake i only think a pool is there rly cos it seems like a very nice area in a very barren world and it has lucky fish! not exactly conclusive evidence i guess hehe

I wonder how hard it is to 'sanctify' a focus, cause there must be more to Elantris than the city and the mountains/coast... Maybe you just have to make a smaller representation of the local geography as your focus, and then use that as the base Aon. Maybe the power of Elantris is also extra-sanctified by the proximity to the Pool it self...*shrugs*

Just because Hoid is able to learn doesn't mean that others can. For example, I eat metals all the time, and I'm not an Allomancer. I can't burn them. Why? Because I don't have enough Preservation in me. In order to be a magic user, you need to have some of a Shard inside of you.

That's what Lerasium does. It increases your connection to Preservation, which makes you a mistborn.

So Hoid isn't teaching others not because he doesn't want to, but because others aren't able. They just don't have enough (if any) of Hoid's shard in them.

ye i realise i made an assumption that he learnt it before the shards picked up their shards, but there is no reason even if he did he coulda been influenced by a part of a shard with a previous holder. thx! xD early assumptions are always the most dangerous :/

That's how I'd always assumed it would work, yeah. Presumably it'd still be weaker than inside Elantris' influence, but not as bad as if you were still trying to use Arelon-based Aons. Edited by Quantum Toast

What if you had the Aon tattoed on your body, could you then become the focus? Or what if you created a portable folding using rope or something to connect the lines to each other? Kinda similiar to how portable ward circles work in the Warded Man by Peter V. Brett.

I guess that would give you less power than a city sized Aon *shrug*

Also remember that Aons can be modified to increase and focus their strength. As far as I know and can tell, Elantris is an un-modified Aon Rao, if a huge one. I'm making a leap of logic here and saying that if you amplified the heck out of a tattoo of Aon Rao, and then set it to target only the person it is tattooed on, you could get an Elantrian that could world-hop and still be able to use Selian/Arelish/Aonic/Elantris-based Aons anywhere in the cosmere.

This very well could be how we have a Dula on Roshar. It seems completly plausible. I think the most difficult thing now would be to get confirmation that this would in fact work or not from Brandon. I wonder if Peter would be able to confirm this theory/idea or if at the AoL interview we could get Josh/Mi'ch to ask him the question. Otherwise it will have to wait until the next time I see him which I don't think will be prior to the signing. But I think it's a very valid theory.

I think somebody asked the tattoo question and it got RAFO'd.

No you are correct. And I would also like to know what the heck happened to Galivar's Shards, maybe I'll ask Brandon when I go to the signing in Vancouver.

Wouldn't Elhokar have inherited his father's Shardset?

We know the Parshendi must have had shardplate and blades before they signed the treaty with Gavilar, so maybe the Parshendi took his plate and blade? Although, I'm not sure how they could have, since there were a lot of people around. That seems to be how it works on the Shattered Plains though, whoever kills the Shardbearer gets the plate and blade. Maybe showing off Gavilar's plate and blade was how they proved to the Alethi that they were the ones behind the assassination? Though, I would have expected this to be mentioned during Dalinar's thoughts about the Parshendi claiming responsibility for Gavilar's murder. So maybe the location of Gavilar's plate will turn out to be important somehow and that would make this a RAFO question.

I thought the Parshendi claimed responsibility for killing him?

yes, but how? did they send a note? or did they say, strut off with gavilar's shardblade held high?

szeth says they fled the scene and tossed away his oathstone, though, so the latter doesn't seem very likely :P

quite the mystery, what happened to gavilar's shards. i remember being shocked during my latest reread when i realized that elhokar didn't have gavilar's shards.

can any1 remember who first discovered gavilar dead? i remember something about him being found with writing next to him (unseemly that a man should write) and i think it might say who got to the body first (so hard looking thru book on phone for 1 line quotes im not even sure if i was dalinar or jasnah talking about it
