"Because he's your enemy, or because you don't remember him?"

"Nathrangking released an evil on this universe that someone will have to clean up. If I knew him before I don't remember."

"Oh. So... that doesn't convince you to not throw me into the Void, then?"

"Why would it?"

The blade flew through the flames of the fox unharmed, burying itself in the vulpine's side.

The fox screamed in agony, its light flickering. It turned to Herate, the fire of destruction in its eyes.

Herate grinned. "That's right! Me. Come here!"

The fox, still attacking the defended Myrkaal, does not notice your approach.

"I don't know what this knife is, but it better do something..."

"Okay."  Martin looks around, studying their surroundings.  "What's the range on this?"

"At your skill level, maybe 50 feet. Don't worry."

Vale took the opportunity to sow a little more confusion. Metal spikes erupted out of the ground around the fox, pointing inward like infantry expecting a cavalry charge. The fires around it started to dim, although they would still feel just as hot.

"50 feet..." Martin murmurs.  He nods and begins tracing the rune, facing away from the others around them.  His hands are shaking.

Herate grabbed the knife again with her telekinesis. She tugged it out.

Fire burst from the fox in a shockwave, melting the metal spikes to slag. A discordant hum rang through the air as the fox prepared to fire another beam of scorching light.

James sighed. "Oh well. It was a long shot."

Herate stabbed the fox again. "Leave us alone!"

James focused. Leave, leave, leave.

Nothing happened.

Vapor closed her eyes and prepared to shove him out.

Decrin said nothing, only continued to walk away from the battle. Hailstones crunched beneath their feet, shattering against the icy ground. What little plant life had avoided being completely swept away by Nath's many attacks was limp and lifeless. Broken, unmoving forms lay haphazardly across the fields, former residents of the town that had once stood in this location. Some still moaned. Many did not.

"Cleaner than yours," he replied.

My eyes take in the carnage without emotion. Nothing shocks me or even inspires tears to rise. The beast secure where he is struggles, but he soon stops. The time for tears are over. "Hold on to that self-righteous indignation of yours. When all else fails it will allow you to sleep at night. For a long time I held this kind of conviction. It allowed me to never question the way that I was pointed as a weapon and set loose. I let it go because I learned that for all that I knew and that I thought that I knew there was much that I did not understand. Questions of guilt became so much less simple. Lay this destruction at my feet if you desire to do so and imagine that you'll sleep better. However, if you imagine that I am the only one to blame for what has happened here then you are a fool. Examine your hands and ask yourself if you are truly less bloodstained than I."

Decrin continued to say nothing, only continued to walk. Eventually, the pair came to a stop at a large rock.

"I got him," whispered Decrin to the figure hiding behind the rock.

"Good," replied Jeffery grimly. "Let's get back. I'm sure the Fellowship will be quite interested to hear of these events."

The shadow engulfed James, matching Vapor push for push. A faint image of the shadow's features became apparent, smiling somewhat mockingly.

"Have we not, either?"

"You... have not... suffered an eternity of imprisonment."

The fox gasped, betraying its weakened state.
