Herate braced herself and stepped through the portal.

She exited just outside the wood where the rebellion was hiding. Wyrn's castle of dark, continuous, stone could be seen in the distance, and Herate turned away from it. Now wasn't the time to dwell on him.

I sense something change. A hole has been torn in reality. It must be Fadran. Internally I sigh. I will the winds to obey my command. They whisper in a thousand voices joined together as one. Warm breezes rise around us. With a thought Fox and I are lifted from the deck of the ship. The tail of the gales pick up Fox's knife. We three are carefully carried through the air toward Fadran's presence. Soon we arrive and are gently set down on the other side of the portal. The knife drops into my hand.

I look straight into Fox's eyes. My gaze filled with all that I can muster. "I swear by the ancient gods that so long as I draw breath you Fox, my daughter, will be safe from harm." The air glows slightly and then all is at it was. "If Circestran were here she would have loved you as I do." This last portion is more whisper than clear statement.

There would have been a time when Fox would have shrugged off those words as dead and empty things. Simply a way to make one feel better. But something about father made her hesitant. Even if he couldn't go through with his promise, like last time, he meant it. Was that enough? Fox wasn't sure. Nath had failed her before, but he also was quite injured at that time. Fox's fear did not go away, and she did not feel much better when her father swept her up. Her eyes were still wide with horror, and she moved over to cling tightly to father, not letting go even after they had landed. When she saw the knife in his hand, Fox almost reached out to grab it, but then decided against it for she was not confident in her ability to hold it steadily.

My eyes meet Fadran's as I hear his question. I see the inquisitive look that he gives Fox and myself. Despite my pain I suppress the discomfort. Fox clings tightly to me. I don't move out of her grasp. The knife in my hand is cool to the touch. With a moment's concentration the blade fades away and floats in the remnants of my mindscape. I try to project calm as I feel Fox's heart rage against her ribs. Any and all emotions other than calm confidence are pushed into the depths. "All was calm while you were away. I take it that you were successful." It requires a little bit of effort, but even through my weakened state I am able to reach into Fadran's mind through our connection. "I can see the question in your eyes Fadran. I have adopted Fox as my daughter. She has lacked a true family for so long and she is the closest thing that I have had to a daughter... Mentally I shrug. In a flash I return to my own mind and body.

I move to the border of my bond with Fox. "I am sorry if I scared you daughter. I should have warned you. I would like to make it up to you. Once you recover I want to teach you if you are willing how to fight with knives. You do not have to believe me when I say that I will not allow harm to come to you so long as I live. As I swore before to come for you and not to abandon you so I swore now. I cannot break my word. Nor would I ever do so.

Circestran beams at Nath's words. She stands silently beside Fox and allows calm and strength to flow as a river around her.

Fox felt Nath in her brain, speaking to her, but she was not strong enough to join him. A genuine smile broke through the icy sheet of fear, dancing on the surface of Fox's lips. Yes, knives would be fun. But the smile faded when he spoke of oaths. She spoke out loud, in the real world, very quietly in barely a whisper, "Then..." she trailed off, unsure if she could really ask it. "Then why didn't you come for me?"

In an attempt to do something which I have not done in eons my single mind becomes two. I touch both connections with the essence of my spirit. My strength falls rapidly and mentally I stumble, but I don't allow it to bleed over. "I do. I cannot be alone as I have been nor could I allow the world to do to her what it was doing. It does seem that we need each other. Dare I say, we all seem to need each other. I think that this fellowship is no longer so simple a thing as a group bound by mutual self interest."

I hear the pain in her voice. The accusation awakens all sorts of demons that sleep in the dark. They whisper to me in wonderment and wail in wrathful tones. Each burrows deep into me tearing me asunder. I am dangerously close to blacking out. Each word is an agony which is nearly more than I can bear. Despite all of this I rise. I embrace them as they tear into me. These are mine and I accept them. "When Winter first took you I came and faced my  demons. When next he came I was too weak and injured to follow. I tried and failed you. There are no excuses that can change that I did not come. I would tear down the infernal realms to have back that moment. Even had it killed me I should have pushed harder. I should have done more. I did not.In this I failed. I allowed my limitations and pain to keep me from you."
