“I love you too.”

Ben tried to keep his worry from showing on his face. Rob would likely end up being ok, but his injuries had been even more serious than Shana’s. And with how tired Shana was, he would be incredibly fatigued.

“He’s Rob. He’ll be fine.”

"Could you check on him later? I'm so sorry, I - I should never have done it."

Closing her eyes she pressed her face against his hand as well.

"I'm a monster. And he's alone, and he would never ask for help."

And even the thought of standing up made her legs shake again.

Jamie smiled at Cassie, "Thanks." she said, taking a sip, "It's good." she took another sip and drummed her fingers against the mug in thought. "In response to your question, I can metabolize pewter and gain enhanced strength. We call it 'burning' because it feels like you're burning it."

“I will be sure and check on him.”

Ben titled Shana’s face until she was looking at him.

”And you are not a monster. You just made a mistake. Everyone makes mistakes. Most people have made far worse.”

"I almost killed him."

She whispered and smiled in spite of her words. He confused her, distracted her so easily. His hand on her face left her skin tingling and she knew he meant what he said. Shana pushed herself up on an ellbow and kissed him softly, thankful that he was here, that she hadn't scared him away.

Ben hugged Shana close to him.

”But you didn’t. There is no use dwelling on the past, what you could have done, should have done. If we spent all of our time doing that, we’d never be able to enjoy or improve the present.”

Ben paused, fighting to keep his voice from quivering. He needed to learn that lesson as well. Talking about it still brought up painful memories.

Shana relaxed against him, hugged him close. His voice shook slightly, but she didn't ask. They all had their package to carry. He would talk about it, when he was ready.

"Check on Rob?"

She asked after a while to change the topic and sat up, only to grab his shoulder to remain sitting. Storm, she hated it when her body stopped her from doing something.

“Sure.”

Ben gently eased her back downwards.

”Stay lying down until I get back. It should prevent most of the dizziness.”

Ben stood up and left Shana’s room, softly closing the door behind him. He went to Rob’s room and knocked on the door.

”Rob? It’s Ben.”

@I think I am here.

Shana wanted to insist that she was able to come along, but he left the room and she sighed, rested back on her bed. Grabbing her blanket she pulled it over her body and only a few heartbeats later she was asleep, her thoughts still with Ben, with his unruly hair and the way he looked at her. She was smiling slightly.

Rob was laying on his back, on his  mattress/bed, looking upwards, deep in thought. Why was Ben here? Maybe to check that he’d healed everything.

“Come in, Ben.” Rob said, sitting himself up on the mattress, ignoring the headache that followed the action.

Ben opened the door and stepped inside. He almost did a double take at the extremely utilitarian surroundings. How could Rob stand the blandness, the boring simplicity? He didn’t even have a proper bed. Ben felt sadness for him. What had been done to him to cause him to want such a depressing room? He looked back at Rob. He was sitting up- that was a good sign.

“Hey, Rob. How are you feeling?”

“Good,” Rob said. “Though I have to admit, I’m not used to people asking me that question.” And if they did, Rob would hide it anyway. Like he always did.

“Just a small headache.” And migraines. And complete exhaustion. It had been an effort to even sit up. And the fact that for some reason he was drawing flames in his sketchbook, without even noticing. What was that?

“Nothing too serious,” he said. “Why do you ask?”

”Wait, people never ask how you are doing?”

Rob paused, then shook his head. “Well, not really. Is that a normal thing people ask each other anyway?”

“Typically, yes. People ask because they care about a person and want to know how they are doing.”

“Oh. I guess that makes sense. But why come to a house full of people who don’t have your powers?” Leona asked.

Jamie shrugged, taking a sip of coffee, "I came looking for you. I had heard rumors, you know?"

Rob nodded, his face neutral, not showing anything of what he thought. “So, if no one’s asked me...” he trailed off, then shrugged.

“That’s fine. What about you? How are you doing?”

Ben winced. Why was he so terrible at talking to people?

”Wait, no, that’s not what I meant! Uh, I mean, people probably haven’t asked you because you always seem to be doing good.”

“I guess so. Not sure if you noticed but:” he waved a hand in front of his face. “I’m too good in the emotions department. Maybe it’s because I’m like that all the time, neutral, that they don’t ask.”

He shook his head. “But that’s something else. Why did you come? Just to ask me how I was?”

"I mean, there's a little under twenty of us radiants here," chimed in Leona. "Some of 'em I haven't seen in a while, but there's other houses besides this one."

“Mostly, yeah. You seemed pretty tired and were injured pretty bad, so I wanted to make sure that you were ok.”
