Is Jaddeth a Shard?

Jaywalk

Question

I just finished Elantris—and it was pretty great—but I was left with one question.

Is Jaddeth a Shard? I’m not sure if we have confirmation or denial, but it kind of struck me as Wyrn being Jaddeth’s champion, in a way. Also, if he is a Shard, what would his intent be? It seems to me that he’s somewhere around Ruin and Odium’s level.

Jaddeth is not a shard per say he is their perception og Dominion whom Odium shattered along with devotion whom Arelon identify as Domi.

That doesn’t quite make sense to me. Is Wyrn just some guy trying to secure power, and using Jaddeth as a tool for his domination?

Also, when they said “Merciful Domi,” it always seemed to me that they were referencing Dominion, not Devotion.

Are [Jaddeth] & [Domi] the Shards Dominion & Devotion?

Peter Ahlstrom

Domi is more Devotion and Jaddeth is more Dominion. But there is some mixing. The shard holders were Aona and Skai.

Questioner

[Does] the expansion of Jaddeth’s empire have more to do with greed and hunger for power, or the innate nature of Dominion?

Brandon Sanderson

Both. I would say both. The innate nature of Dominion probably caused the greed and hunger for power.

Questioner

What would you say percentage-wise?

Brandon Sanderson

Well, one caused the other. It definitely started with Dominion. The Skaze are pretty thirsty for power.

Did you have the 10th Anniversary edition of Elantris? If not, you might need to look up what the Skaze are, since they weren't directly shown in the initial print, and only referenced like twice.

I don’t. I got a copy from the library—signed, so it’s probably pretty old.

Fair. The Skaze are essentially Seons, but where the Seons were made from Devotion, Skaze are from Dominion and pretty much have been running the whole Jaddeth thing this entire time.

Jaddeth is definitely not a shard, or at least not a full one.  Dominion and Devotion, the original shards on Sel, were splintered by Odium long ago.  Then he stuffed their remains in the cognitive realm, which eventually merged together to form the Dor.  Plus, I don’t think Brandon would want any Shards from other books to be closely involved with the Elantris series, especially since Elantris was his first book and was written far before he started including significant crossovers between he cosmere works.

However, you’re right to think there’s something going on with Jaddeth.  Almost certainly, the Skaze are involved.  And it’s possible a Splinter of Dominion much larger than any of the Skaze could have survived Odiums assault intact or coalesced afterwards somehow, and has taken the name Jaddeth.  We really can’t know until we start getting the Elantris sequels.  But, I doubt Jaddeth is a full Shard.

Maybe Jaddeth is Dominion's Cognitive Shadow

I don't think so. Cognitive Shadows can Ascend, and are obviously constrained to the Cognitive Realm (barring certain exceptions involving a concentrated effort) and I don't think Odium would have shoved the power of a Shard into the Cognitive Realm where the Shard's mind that he'd just worked so hard to kill resided and could just pick it back up. He would probably have made sure Skai had moved on completely before doing so.

Maybe autonomy have a avatar on sel and it's Jaddeth?

We know that Bavadin has several 'avatars' allocated at some shardworlds, major and minor, over the Cosmere...is Austre from Nalthis one of them? Is The Wyrn of the Fjordell Empire or Jaddeth one of them?

Or if we recall what the followers of Shu Dereth believes that 'Jaddeth rewards devotion in his followers, as well as ambition' + something you said some time ago about the ramifications of Ambition demise... Is The Wyrn or Jaddeth Himself connected with Ambition?

Brandon Sanderson

You can expect things on Sel to be either Dominion or Devotion. People can be ambitious--even Shards--and reward ambition even if they're not specifically tied to the Shard of Ambition.

Merged this topic with the duplicate.

I... did not realize this was a duplicate.  So basically, I answered a question that had already been answered (sigh).  Glad to know my efforts were helpful.

Neither did I. Probably should have just went to the actual thread, but too late now.
