Well, it’s Mother’s Day in the USA and maybe elsewhere.  I know in Guatemala Mother’s Day is always May 10th.

No matter what day it is, this is a tribute to the mother’s we’ve all read about in Sanderson’s books.

Tindwyl: She’s a Mother of Terris.  We never got to meet any of her children, but I also feel that she was a mother to Vin.  (Elend as well, but not as much as.  She was more of a teacher to him.)  She taught Vin how to be herself.

Mare: We never got to see Mare at all and she never had any children, although she wanted to.  However, with the things Kelseir said and how she would have liked Vin as a daughter.  I think of Mare as one of the mothers that I admire from Sanderson’s books.  She sounds like a wonderful lady and I think she would have taken Vin in just as Kelseir did.

Mrs. Saxon: She may not be around a lot for Joel, but she works all the time to provide for her son.  You can tell she care about Joel.

Dalinar’s Wife: I won’t say anything about her here, because of OB spoliers, but know that I love her.

Hesina: I love her clever wit and the way she talks with Kaladin.  She is also great.

By no means is this an extensive list of the mothers in Sanderson’s books.  Please add/discuss the other mothers you admire.  If you want you can even mention mothers from other books as well.

Shout-out to Shasta Smedry! Not only does she have great taste in books, but she was also nice enough to keep an eye on Alcatraz during his childhood.

When I saw this topic it warmed my heart. I think this is a great topic, as mothers are so important in all of our lives (and those of book characters as well, of course). So thanks so much for starting this @Aurora the Rioter! I think it’s awesome.

Daora is a great mom! Three brilliant kids and one an Elantrian that she successfully protected for years. Kudos!

Navani, who is, in my opinion, one of the best examples of a mother in the Cosmere.

Thanks @Rebecca.  I’m glad I started this as well, but I also have to say it’s also because of my friend @The Hope of Elantris, who wrote a term-paper about mothers in LDS fiction.

I totally forgot about Daora.  I just started Elantris, so I haven’t seen her be super awesome yet.  But I do like her already.

I do love Navani as well.  She is wonderful.

I second that!

Daora is certainly a great mother.

How about Vivenna who in some ways might be said to be the kind of mother that Nightblood never had!!

What of Paloma who treats Shallan as the daughter she never had?

If we mention Elantris, how can we not mention Karata?

How about Shallan's mom? She... Okay, never mind.

And Teft's mother! All those times that she... Hmmm, yeah, not exactly the best parenting techniques.

Okay, okay, I got one.
