Well, you see, hamsters all over the Cosmere have continued to thrive, but then evil intern bound his soul to an evil axe, failed to steal a magic sword, and successfully stole a piece of paper that lets him summon Bargain Mart Voldemort and is about to destroy all hamsters (and everything else)

so that’s happening

"Why not both?" said Bacon. "Here, sign my bow."

He offered his violin bow.

"I must say, it is an honor! Am I correct in my understanding that you knew the original Narrator of my Author?"

“Don’t give 9/10 the credit. I think something terrible just happened at the vault, and it will be preoccupied at worst, at best we’ll have a tenuous alliance. I think when I was in its head, I got some idea of what it is. It’s not a character in the usual sense- and it came here with me, so if I hadn’t been so curious to come here, it wouldn’t exist in TLT in the first place. It is here because of me, has the sword because of me, and it’s already my responsibility. At this point I just have to hope we all survive long enough to have to worry about it.” He realized he was rambling. The experience had rattled him, certainly. “All this to say. Yes. I swear it. I will oppose 9/10mmHB#2.”

For an instant, the realm that 9/10mmHB#2 occupied suddenly rippled, the boundary between the sight, language, and hearing warping and twisting under the weight of an invisible force. For a few moments 9/10’s hearing became a rush of noise, an explosion, screaming, a single discordant note like a metal string, broken voices -knows how to summon the Witherlord- -had worried it wouldn’t cha-  -swear it. I will oppose nine ten- -ended up killing an Author? The experience suddenly ended. 9/10mmHB#2 jolted in shock. That was disorienting. What just happened?

“Then your trial is passed.”

Inkwell appeared in the Dreamsmith’s workshop. The Dreamsmith stood before him, a man of flesh with eyes of fire. “Hello Inkwell. What shall I forge for you?”

Spoiler

“No idea!” The Dreamsmith examined 9/10 carefully. “It seems you saw many different parts of the Thread at once. It could be an effect of the World of Dreams. You are more connected to it than most, given your incorporeal nature.” The Dreamsmith looked down at his wrist, on which a watch appeared

“Oh my, you are falling behind. Inkwell’s already made it to me. Better hurry up and develop. Here, I’ll help. What are your flaws?”.

If he does manage to claim the Witherlord, Malevolence certainly will try to destroy the Thread. However, even the Witherlord can only do so much. Destroy worlds? Yes. Entire Thread at once? No.

As he waited for Rebus’s reply, Malevolence finished his work on the rebuilt and modified Evil Communicator. With a small laser pencil, he engraved the new name onto its surface: Darkness Instant Messenger.

Activating the device, Malevolence thought clearly, device sending those thoughts to the intelligent beings of darkness across the Thread.

Greetings! I am Malevolence, and I have uncovered the secret ritual to return your master from the void. While I am wary of the certain risk of betrayal, I also am hopeful of finding some likeminded individuals who would be willing to aid me as I complete the ritual. If any of you exist who wish to ally with me, just think your response with Intent, and the device will transmit it directly to me.”

“Do you mind if I wait for it to finish? If 9/10mmHB#2 fails, I’m going to have to ask for a body for it. And if it succeeds…” He held out the arcadian pen to the Dreamsmith. “I’d need this… improved. It’s similar to Narration but on a leash, so to say. I think it could be more powerful than your average Narrator, with your help. I’m not even sure how it works, though from what I know about this world it’s bound to contain at least a little prismite. You might be able to understand what it is better than I.”

Spoiler

9/10mmHB#2 sighed deeply. Of course he did. How would it go about this? It was already difficult enough to think about these things, was that pride or nature? It would run from any fight he couldn’t win, was that cowardice or common sense? It would manipulate Inkwell into getting it a body, was that selfishness or just equity?
The more it considered, the more it knew it didn’t have one flaw that would be the solution. It had almost anything you could think of. It was callous enough to wipe out entire worlds with the detachment of a force of nature, entitled enough that a challenge like this turned it rude and violent, and petty enough to withhold useful information just to spite Inkwell. But it wasn’t particularly distasteful of any of such traits.
Wait. Could it lie? No. Not in someone else’s mind. That would be impossible. Add dishonesty to the list.
This was stupid. It wasn’t a character that needed development. It almost wished it had fought. But there had to be some way to con its way through this. Honesty might be the best thing here, it admitted. The trouble with having everything about yourself but a goal erased is that it erases you. I haven’t questioned why I follow orders, why I am this way. Maybe it’s time I should. I chose to fill the role of a character. Now it’s time to become one. If I decide to destroy something I will have a reason, and if I don’t- all the better for my reputation. And I’ll deal with the consequences.
I’m going to be honest. You’ve given me an entire crisis of identity. I’m supposed to destroy this world, sabotage it, find a way to make the authors lose interest and make the whole machine grind to a halt. Don’t get me wrong, I hate it here, so much. But I’m beginning to realize I don’t have much a reason to exist. And being part of this is a reason. Even if the part I play is a destroyer.

No, I won’t change. But I will think.

"Oh, I cannot make him a body. He did not bring one with him, and so any body I make him will be as unreal as I am." The Dreamsmith took the pen. "This is an interesting device. It does indeed have Prismite within its structure..." He peered into the pen lengthwise. "Does it gather ambient C.L. from the Thread? Incredible." He looked up at Inkwell. "Where did you say you got it?"

Spoiler

"Good enough for me." The Dreamsmith snapped his fingers, and 9/10 exited his mind and entered his workshop.

9/10 was back in Inkwell's body. But for some reason, Inkwell was not present in it. The Dreamsmith watched him, no longer made of fire and light, but mortal flesh. Only his eyes, glowing like embers, revealed the nature of his soul.

"Welcome, 9/10mmHB#2. What shall I forge for you?"

For context, the Dreamsmith has altered the flow of the story to place Inkwell and 9/10's consciousnesses within the same body, but at different times for that body. Also, they're each in a separate instance of the Dreamsmith's workshop.

Well, if the Dreamsmith couldn't provide 9/10 a body, it wasn't Inkwell's fault. He could probably figure it out himself, given a little inspiration. "Um. I had a friend who lended it to me before I came here. She... died. I think she must have been a Narrator, or some equivalent from my world. I might have broken a piece off of it by accident. Before that it couldn't create anything within a narrative magic system, like a lightsaber or a god metal." He pondered the pen for a while. "The Lost Pages have been stolen. Maybe what the Thread needs is something that can fight withergeists." He thinks of Futility, which has mysteriously returned to his belt in its improved form. He remembers how it reacted to Fog when she touched it- drawing mordite from her mist, the inksteel trying to absorb as much mordite as possible to improve the copy. "The sword. You're familiar with mordite weapons?"

im going to guess, is "ambient C. L." Creative Light?

It can't be helped, I guess, but- storms, it's frustrating. I had Inkwell seek you out because the pen can't make true life, and I didn't want to take the chance. But we'll have to figure something else out. He always does. These last words were practically spat. An idea came to him. An Ennuller is a person with a nullite core, like a Narrator is a person with a Prismite core, right? And a mordite core... bonding mordite to your soul... He couldn't push away the intrusive thought that the last time someone had come in here with a mordite blade, they had left with it bonded to their soul.

Could you make a way I could become an ennuller if I were to obtain a body?

Inkwell notices a guarded expression on the Dreamsmith's face at the mention of a mordite weapon. "I have one, my own creation. Or partially mine, partially 9/10's. It... reacted curiously to a withergeist's touch. I have the feeling that it could become a powerful tool in the coming days, but it's still dangerous. Volatile. When it touched the withergeist, I could feel the mordite in the weapon reacting, feeding. I don't want it damaging my soul. Luxite is lost, and would paint a target on my back, but... what would happen if it was alloyed with... Nullite perhaps?"

Close. Chaotic Light, of which Prismite is the solid form.

The Dreamsmith frowned. "I am... familiar with them." He rubbed his shoulder absently, blacksmith's apron revealing a scar of greyed flesh that ran down his right arm. "They are dangerous both to wielder and foe." He eyed Futility. "You know of the Blade I made for Malevolence. Know that his Blade is not a boon. It has only drawn him to greater evil, though it carries the potential for redemption. Indeed, I made it hoping..." The Dreamsmith looked down at his anvil. "Suffice it to say, I will not make such a Blade again. Even if I would, it would not aid you against the Witherlord." The Dreamsmith extended a hand, and a misty image of a Mordite blade appeared in it. "Withergeists, at least the more powerful of them, can control Mordite to an extent. However, a well-forged Blade can resist their efforts. With the Witherlord... no forging or alloy can resist him. He holds total dominion over all Chaotic Darkness, all Mordite, all withergeists. Beware, Inkwell. Futility will be useless against him." An indistinct figure appeared above the Dreamsmith's hand, grasping the Mordite blade. "The Narrator Nameless once battled the Witherlord with a Mordite blade. With the aid of the Skeins, survivors from the days of the Luxsprites, he brought the Witherlord to his knees. Helpless and chained, the Witherlord could do naught to stop the blade from falling." He dropped his hand, and the images vanished into shadow. "But in the end, with Mantle's bearer revealed, Nameless found he could not bring himself to slay the friend he failed."

Abruptly, the Dreamsmith picked up the Arcadian Pen. "I do believe I can modify this pen, or perhaps forge something like it." He examined Inkwell again. "It depends on your soul."

Spoiler

The Dreamsmith raised an eyebrow. "Two problems. First, do you happen to have an extraordinary amount of Nullite on your person? Second, I am a forger of tools, not a maker of Narrators, Ennullers, or Withergeists. I... could make something from Nullite giving you related powers, but I prefer to work directly from the souls of those who come to me. Malevolence was an... exception. Besides that, Ennullers are generally strictly regulated. If you began acting in evil, their organization could very well hunt you down."

A hooded figure materialized. "...at long last."

Malevolence nodded to him. "Greetings. I am he who has ripped the Lost Page from Bacon's grasp, he who will be the Witherlord." He nodded to the side, where Rebus sat greatly slowed by the absence of his Author. "That is Rebus, the Antagonist and one most determined to stop me from this path."
