"Look. We're very sorry- are you sure there isn't anything we can do for you? We'd hate to leave you with a bunch of angry spear-wielding maniacs at your doorstep."

No!

The page drifted towards Malevolence.

I was commanded by the author himself! willed Bacon furiously. Previous holder of this awful power, convinced it should never again be wielded! I bear his will that this page be protected.

The page slowed.

I am the heir of Fate! willed Bacon desperately. This page- and all that would be wrought thereby- is MINE!

The page stopped, almost close enough to brush Malevolence's fingers. Balanced between their wills, torn between duty and destiny, it fluttered.

You know what? I have a plan. Don’t look into these spoilers if you’re Nameless.

Spoiler

Major character spoilers for I@9, only people with names can read this

Spoiler

That means people who don’t have names aren’t allowed to progress

Spoiler

Neither authors without names nor characters with names are allowed to see this

Spoiler

If you’re an author with a name and you have characters with a will to live then you’re welcome, however.

Spoiler

Alright, next one is the idea

Spoiler

If the world is destroyed before 9/10 manages to kill me (yes me, the author) then 9/10 will be killed. So he has a bit of a motivation to stop Malevolence, even if he wants the Thread destroyed.
whenever i@9 finish their trials, whatever the result, their first priority will be to preserve the Thread. How? Well, links go both ways

Darkseeker is his weakness. It changes with him, but we might be able to reverse that. Get Darkseeker away from Malevolence, have a bunch of Narrators try and change it from Mordite to Prismite or at least Nullite, and we could in theory do something to Malevolence

9/10 has glimpsed the bonding of Darkseeker, so he would be able to communicate this plan

Heck, inkwells pen can already rewrite and objects temporarily and it’s only containing trace prismite

secondarily, Loren Ipsum. The pages contain information. What if we could prevent malevolences mind from processing that information? Curse the pages in a way that they are unintelligible, like that one old language from Alcatraz, or make malevolences brain simply not be able to hold onto the information. This would stall.

finally, someone really really needs to claim Protagonist. Like now. I don’t care too much, as long as the person really puts some effort and skill into their character (because I don’t have either), but we need to make Protagonist being used a precedent, since everyone is afraid to be the main character. Arguably, malevolence is scarier than Rebus right now, so there’s that.
I have a couple more plans and ideas to use but those would spoil the fun, so you’ll have to wait and see (if you care)

good luck, everyone. Let’s not destroy the Thread!

Somewhere in the Mindscape, Aeryn chuckled. Cep lifted his head to see her grinning, violet eyes flashing. "Your friends are here, brother dearest. Shall we give them a little welcome?" She grinned, in at least an approximation of glee, though it seemed more feral and dark.

Erryin and Taeidin felt the Mindscape become more aware of them. All around them, walls sprung up, creating a labyrinth around them. Incidentally, it will actually be helpful to have Taeidin here. The walls blocked out the light of the Mindscape, but seemed themselves to glow slightly, illuminating the edges of walls.

Kill... you? You mean an Avatar of yourself?

Screwing with Darkseeker is smart, but it would be virtually impossible to get it away from Malevolence as he can just resummon it. Also, Mordite is really tricky to mess with.

Altering his mind (I'm thinking memory erasure?) is probably our most viable option beyond killing him. Assuming you want to stop him, ofc.

Unfortunately, our best choice for Protagonist just died and we don't have anyone else poised to take it up at the moment.

He can't quite tell. Or rather he can...but it doesn't make sense. The connection is faint, but he can track it down. Cep is far in front of them. He's right in front of them. He's behind them. He's above them. He's not there at all. The tracking soon starts making his brain hurt.

This was an effect he had noticed before, when he searched for Cep in his own mindscape, but he had not thought it to be a problem here. Frowning, Taeidin tried again, instead searching for Aeryn.

Bacon closed his eyes. Everyone... I'm sorry.

Malevolence held the Page in his hands and marveled at how far he had come. From intern to independent villain to contender for Antagonist to a seeker of darkness. And now, at long last, the power of the Witherlord was within reach. He could not help but laugh.

Almost as soon as Malevolence reentered reality, his exterior teleporters transported him away, detecting the Page in his possession. Not to his base proper, as there was potential damage to security systems from the Vault’s breach. Instead, it transported him to a totally random location.

Malevolence appeared in a forest where trees only fell when there was no one to hear them. There he laughed until his throat was raw.

As he laughed, he read the page. As  he read it, his laughter only redoubled in strength. It echoed through the forest, absolutely making noise despite the lack of outside observers.

Eventually, Malevolence’s laughter died away. He wiped the tears from his eyes and regained his composure. Right. Time to get to work.

“Time to Refresh.” He said, and drones appeared around him with whirring blades and needles, restoring his lost technology. As they worked, he pulled up the feeds from his Sophon observation network. A good thing I did not go straight to my base. It seems I have a visitor.

Technology restored, Malevolence vanished in a crackle of lightning.

“Of course - but fighting Platypus, going on a quest, or redeeming Malevolence are all dangerous, hard, and not especially secret.”

“Thank you very much!” Jack smiled at the shopkeeper as she left, then at Lyric. “Sure! We can use the last bit of the notebook for the various wisdom, and the front as your journal.” He wrote “shopkeeper: avoid Narrators and trouble” at the end of the book, then handed it over.

Someone was laughing. A dark laugh, echoing throughout the warped space inside the vault. “Congratulations, Malevolence.”

I concur - and I probably won’t even kill them this time.

Lyric took the journal and opened it to the first page. He closed his eyes for a moment, then opened them and wrote:

P. 4392: I and Jack bought supplies from a woman in the forest. Jack handled the negotiations, while I kept lookout.

Malevolence appeared back in his base, Lost Page no longer in his grasp. He walked over to a half-finished device that looked similar to his Evil Communicator and continued his work on it.

”Hello, Rebus. I don’t recall inviting you to this place.”

Myles sighed. His Author had forgotten about him again. He didn't even know what had happened to that plotline he was in. Inwardly, he shook his fist at the sky and cursed his Author, knowing he would hear, but outwardly he showed no reaction. He turned in a circle, looking at the void he was stuck in and waiting for his Author to fill in the area. As time dragged on, he began to grow impatient, wondering if his Author was just keeping him here indefinitely. Then—there. A small world, barely more than a meter-wide cifcle of stone, with a chair in the middle. He landed and sat down gratefully—though grudgingly—and began to think. There went many of his plans, and his Author's. He had no idea where this direction was going to go now. He put his elbows on his knees and bowed his head, considering.

We need a gosh darn protagonist, but none of my characters are relevant enough. Also I would suck at writing a main protagonist

Someone cool should make a bid for Protagonist.

I agree. Actually, I’d planned for the Protagonist/Antagonist thing to be concluded before Malevolence got near the Witherlord, but it seems he’s gotten ahead of me.
