“I do pretend. Even I barely know whether I’m a good person or a bad person underneath. And the only way for me to truly fail is to die.”

The grooves had more give than the ones his father made, almost as though they might move around. When he let the cylinder run, in a mostly comprehensible chord it said “Mr. Whitlock?”, then seized up.
“Because you’re the only person who understands me and hasn’t tried to betray me. That count for so much.”
“It’s true. Narrators usually get to pick their names, so I decided to make a joke about Abstract’s effects on me.”

Yeah, it was Inversion, but a witch doctor (if I recall) said it had the same effects as Mordite.
Yup, except Rebus doesn’t bleed. Him ending up as a Fallen, though, is quite honestly an alarming prospect, given the fact that he can unleash grey goo (or worse, controlled self-replicating nanomachines that also build weapons).
That was useful, though it would be much more so if Hacob wasn’t missing.

"You're missing the point. We see through your pretend. You don't have any substance to you, at least not visible. You're not scary in the least, in any way!"

"Hi?" Snow said inquisitively.

"I don't have a reason to betray you. I like you."

"Abstract?"

'Cus when she touched Nullite it Nullified her and she had a panic attack

So if she can feel that her Narration is being Nullified, then yeah she'd react the same

It was probably a coincidence. wink wink :P

Contained, yes. He’d do some damage, though, and probably AI-box experiment his way out unless they tried to kill him.
No, it was not. Rebus sent the compass drone into the Dark field, wondering what would happen.

Just in time, Rebus remembered that violence was not allowed at the party. :P He compartmentalized his frustration, though perhaps once the party was over he could show the man what he could really do. “Visible isn’t something I can provide. All I have are words on a page, unfortunately… So I need better weapons, different substance. And I need plans, preparation.”
The cylinder started up again. “Hello. I don’t think you’re Mr. - or is it Dr. Whitlock, but I’d be glad to talk to you.”
Rebus smiled. It was a weird thing to be happy about, but it did make him happy. “And I don’t have a reason to betray you, either. Honestly, even if I did I probably wouldn’t. Because I like you.”
“The weapon the Dreamsmith made me - don’t worry, by the way, he’ll come back eventually. It lets me do things with concepts, but to break my word might make me magically untrustworthy or even unable to speak.”

I shall go to sleep now. See you tomorrow!

😂Xanther smirked. "I see you can't take a little personality. My dear boy, you need to hint at something, or everyone will be completely taken off guard when apparently they have to pay attention to something. I'm trying to help you, though I suppose, if you can't take the truth, I'll just go freeze your Protagonist in Carbonite and make you find someone new." He paused. "Actually, I wouldn't. He's no threat to me anyway, so it hardly matters that you're distracting me."

Snow giggled. "Hi," he said again, shyly.

"That's good to hear. Even if I'm not sure I believe you."

"Huh," she said. "So... when do I get mine?"

Tam touched the Nullifying field and gasped, jerking backwards.

She grit her teeth and clutched her hands together for a moment before relaxing.

He looked back, then came reluctantly to a stop. The fire in his veins just wanted to keep running, keep moving. There was so much potential that wasn't being used...

"What?"

Well, they would probably either try to kill him or lock him up like the Witherlord, and I doubt he could escape from that.

The Prismite was ejected from the drone with considerable force as the drone approached the field.

I think it's far funnier where you just have to have a kind of possible explanation for things, but that doesn't work as well in a plot-based time *cough cough*

Symbol blinked, feeling drowsy. "Hmm?"

She shrugged, then offered him her arm. "Go ahead. Perhaps it will provide opportunity for character development."

Bacon gasped. "Temptress! I fear lest my partaking saps me of all my humanity!"

Rebus refilled the drink and waited to see if the relevant Author would write in a body.

Rebus chuckled a little, thinking of his outfit - and what he had just done. He didn’t say anything, though.

Rebus was a little sad about all those thoughts. She may have been right - certainly at the beginning of their relationship he had been simply trying to benefit himself - but that didn’t mean that causing her emotional pain and watching Lady Bug do the same made him feel good. In fact, it made him feel guilty for the first time in quite a while.

“Not that I know. I cannot lie, actually - it would literally break my word.”

Rebus probably should have expected that. He put the compass on a little drone and moved it away from the Narrator interference.

The young man who had been thinking at Bacon came over to speak to him. “He does make sense, in a way. You simply have to jump to several conclusions, follow an addled chain of free association, determine what is legitimate figgldygrak, and then put together the resulting rebus in a way that makes sense. Earlier, for instance, he was saying that rather than a directive, he was inverted and rooted - in other words, especially imaginary.”
Meat stabbed him with Nonsense, and went hurdling off into the distance. “Telekinetic parkour typos? It’s him in a way.”

Alright. Let’s get you an idea, then! Perhaps we can make a list of properties that fluctuate continuously, and then ones that do not.

"Wow!" says Bacon. "That sounds like a lot of work." He chewed his smore thoughtfully. "So, what did that last sentence mean?"

On 4/29/2025 at 5:27 PM, TwinStorm said:

@Bird Furious did you respond to this?

Oh, I see. It's just a way that Bacon Narrates sometimes, what with being a bard and all.

"No problemo! If you need any new organs, just let me know. I've heard electroreceptors are all the rage."

Chaotic Darkness’s magic system boils down to “disintegrate everything I touch and everything in that direction”, with some additional corruption-related mechanics (turn people into withergeists through exposure to Chaotic Darkness and mess up magic systems someone corrupted already has, mainly). It messes with your mind and makes you want to destroy things, and slowly eats away at the souls of those it makes contact with, preventing wounds it inflict from being healed. Uh, and I believe one can bond with a withergeist to order them around and use the powers without being annihilated, at the cost of the slow corruption of your mind and soul, eventually making you an new withergeist. The Witherlord (the most powerful incarnation of Chaotic Darkness) has a few other powers I don’t know much about, but I’m not sure they’d be Shaping.
That being said the Fragment of Corruption does sound like Chaotic Darkness, even if Shaping is just Chaotic, not Dark.

The ceiling was now the floor - Taeidin was still standing on it, but it was right-side up. “Time is different there, true - years pass with those two words, while instants can warrant endless description and Authors can leave for a time and pick up the story again as though nothing had happened here. But they have merely one dimension of time, and the medium Narration uses is quite like that of their control. I can bring you briefly into Thread Perception, if you wish.”

Rebus sent a tendril of nigh-invisible utility fog to investigate.
Very true - I think Platypus, Thread extraction devices, time travel, Essence switching, and Balancium are the only sources. But unless you’re already a Narrator, where are you gonna get Prismite

"I do wish."
