“That was what I asked you, thinking you’d reached this point already. I’m inclined to ask either an Author with established lore knowledge, or a very active one.”

Rebus prime raises an eyebrow. “It seems to have been fine so far. I fail to see what the issue is, other than issues associated with high levels of power in general.”

A ball of normal darkness can be seen on the horizon. It’s probably fine.

"What happened?" he leaned in, interested.

"You invited me here!"

Cricket walked over to Bat, and placed a hand on his shoulder. "Hey." he said softly.

"There is no way for authors to die!" Desolation roared. "That is simply a fact."

The Emperor attempts to break free, unsuccessfully though, remebering what Sain said.

Flashback: "My strands are immune to narration." Sain says.

The Emperor turns to The Scribe. "You're not a Narrator are you? You must be a follower of an Ennuller." He grabs the strands and pulls, yanking The Scribe towards him. He holds out his blade, letting The Scribe be pierced by it. He pulls the blade out, but there is no wound, only pain. "Where else would your strands come from."

I would assume the strands retreat.

He looks to the scribe on the ground. "Please, you don't have to fight me. I am not your true enemy."

The Scribe hesitates, and talks in super fast, sped up time. “I never said that? Neither did Sain? Sain got a Nullite mech (which Pyk mined from a Nullite deposit), and before then I was actively opposing your Narration with my own. Rest assured. I’m a Narrator - the Ennuller lifestyle could never suit me. I may or may not have created a magic system from Narration - then made it independent of Narration (like making a sword, I use blacksmithing to make it, but I don’t use blacksmithing to use the blade). I just recently gave myself this Narration independent magic.”

As The Scribe neared him, the Strands disappeared and he teleported behind the Emperor, refusing to act against him. He did, however, teleport the both of them far away from Ashton. “Sorry, but I don’t really want to hurt you. You aren’t particularly evil. But I kind of promised to protect Atlas, and that includes protecting her friends.”

sorry, got dinner

“Or the greedy. But that is a fact with any sort of magic, and I do not see how helping people, even if people might take advantage of you, is a problem.”

Rebus appears, having no context but interested anyway. “Do you want my help?”

Bat yelped. “Oh! Uh… uh, hi.”

The blob rippled happily.

"That would certainly be useful. Do you think this has something to do with why your tattoos faded?"

-

She nodded again, doubting that she would actually say anything to him. Or Cricket.

Isadore pet the blob and returned to watching the action.

He shrugged. “Honestly, I kinda think so.”

"That would be excellent. I need to secure a supply of Nullite as well and from what I understand, that place is rich in it. Tell me, are they averse to selling Nullite? And if they are, what measures do they take to prevent its theft?"

A laugh came through the phone. We can easily secure whatever you wish using neither method. Meet me in the mountains when you are ready.

“That’s good. I’m a bit bored, and worried that if I don’t do something my Author will start a plot about a fever dream version of Bacon. Or the mysterious ball of darkness, the Time Being, Capt’n Exposition, or any number of crazy ideas he’s just had.”

Isadore whispered a soft thank you.

He beamed. “I wonder if I could learn to trigger it.”

He frowned. “Just let me know if you start feeling cold.”

“We could… uh… play with chemicals!”

She nodded thoughtfully, sipping her water. “I see. If mere survival is your wish, you might like to look into Entoturis. If you’d prefer to keep your mobility, or vanquish the hero, I could aid you in such aims.”

Yeah… muy sad

Isadore stood back and watched. For now.

"Maybe. I wish I was good at talking, like you."

"I wish to kill him, but people like him... they have a bad track record of dying."

"Indeed. My Author doesn't do them often."

“…ah,” Bat said, as if he understood any of that. “I see. That must be kinda scary.”

The Emperor speaks in Rebus' head. "My Author is concerned about that. Humor me would you?"

Rude, Lady Bug’s voice chided. Talking in someone’s head like that. Hehe.

“Yeah.” He pulled up his sleeve to examine his new tattoo. Was it just him, or did it look a little fainter?

“Indeed. But perhaps, if you can convince your author of your own merits, his favor would turn toward you.” She swirled her glass of water, examining him thoughtfully. “Where do you come from, Morbius?”

"You're better than me." he said gloomily.

"Perhaps. But.... my Author holds Chaisler in high esteem... unless I can find a way to unleash the true Chaisler, make him be hated. And my name is Malan."

She scowled. “Too many M names floating around this thread.” She sipped again. “If you wish to shift your author’s focus, you must focus on yourself first. Where do you come from, Malan?”

"But you make talking seem so easy, so natural! I wish I was like that."

"I come from a small world. Welderan. My parents didn't seem to care about me, so I ran away."

“I… thanks, I suppose.”

She smiled. “That’s sympathetic. And then?”

Just now, Through The Living Glass said:

"Yeah. Dang."

She sighed.

"Well . . . I know we just got attacked and everything . . . but now what?"

“Well… I kinda wanna check and make sure Rose got out okay. The elders prolly would have been checking on her, but… you know.” He shrugged, stepping over to where he’d left the boot snake to see if it was still there and if it would maybe like to be his friend.

"Yep." he said softly. "How do you function so well? I know you've had a hard time in the past, but you go on, and are happy. I want to do that more than anything, move on."

"I managed to win a scholarship to a prestigious university and study biology, there."
