Mudkip then realized that he really didn't want to evolve. He wanted to stay a mudkip because mudkips are really cute.

Mudkip suddenly melted. He’d secretly been a popsicle the entire time.

Truthless wept, then just brought Mudkip back. He was too cute to die.

Doh! I've been gone too long!

So the real mudkip was in fact never real in the first place, but only a spontaneous mental construct based on the popsicle, to make up for an increasing lack of higher than average cuteness. The everstone was actually a chocolate chip.
