He watched her for a moment.

"I didn't mean to make you embarrassed."

"I'm just not used to talking about it."

"I am well enough." Malevolence ignored Aelinor as he had Unintelligible, a cup of tea appearing in his hand. "Although I have been better." He gestured to the numerous medical devices attached to him, then took a sip of tea. "I understand you have questions for me?"

“Indeed I do!” She shifted in her seat, dusting off her lap. Aelinor looked tense, staring at Malevolence worriedly.

“I was just hoping to learn a bit about you! Perhaps your hobbies, aspirations, and the like. My good friend Unintelligible here seems to think you’re quite dangerous, and I’d like to know why!” She leaned forward intently. “And I’d also like to know what you think of the tea,” she added with a chuckle.

Rebus grinned back, offering a handshake. “They don’t know what they’re in for, do they? This will be very interesting…”

Nameless shook Rebus's hand. "I very much doubt anyone knows what they're in for."

Rebel waited, making himself some wares to provide an alibi and induce greed.

A few minutes later, the guard returned with a stiff-looking man in a shining breastplate. "You're the stranger?" He asked sharply. "What's your business here?"

"Hobbies? Science, technology, reading." Malevolence said. "I'm not a mind reader to know why Unintelligible thinks I'm so dangerous exactly, but perhaps it has to do with the rabbits I've recently met." He took another sip of tea. "The tea is excellent, by the way."

Right. She already told me.

"Right, uh . . . anyway," he said semi-awkwardly.

"And you? Probably your whole life, huh?"

“True - the Authorial interplay makes it difficult to predict the future. But you specifically are going to have a pretty significant impact, I suspect.”
“I’m a traveler, with curiosities to sell. I’m also very lost.”

". . . Most of it, yeah. When I was younger, I- well, some of the other Dryads and I would travel around a bit. It's not hard for us to get around with so many other trees in the greater area, but we'd always leave a few behind to guard our own. Now, though . . ."

He sighed.

"I guess I'm too anxious to leave them by themselves. I don't want them to get hurt . . . even if most of them are already gone."

"That's... really sweet of you."

He shrugged.

"I guess. Hasn't done much good, though. I'm the only one left, and I'll succumb to whatever took the others eventually . . ."

"Not unless Ravena gets here first."

But there was nothing there. She'd just imagined it.

Had she? She quieted, waiting for... something.

A small noise came from an alleyway behind her.

She walked over.

The rat on her shoulder scuttled down her arm, before plopping down in front of the alleyway.

But once again, there was nothing there.

She was probably just imagining things.

After all, she was in a ghost town. It could be anything. A stray animal, a creaky window, another person. The rat scuttled down the alleyway for a long minute.
