She grinned--it was somehow much realer than any of the other ones she'd smiled. "It does get lonely, now that nobody's around anymore."

He sighed. "Yeah. Kinda wish there were some people like myself I could talk to. Why are all of your people gone?"

"Dead, adventuring, or otherwise occupied," she said, twisting the thread around her fingers.

Terry scrambled back to his feet and pulled out a small, hidden pistol. He pointed it at Bob, but then hesitated, growled, and shot Nullite bullets at Utility instead.

The stone beneath his feet shot up in front of the bullets, where they exploded in a shower of sparks and bits of shrapnel.

A separate stone tendril whipped around his hand, crushing and twisting it.

Utility lowered the guard and raised an eyebrow.

"Are you done?"

". . . Ah. I'm sorry."

He eyed the thread once more.

"Did you . . . make that?"

That’s what it felt like to Five, at least. Her gaze dropped to the deck, where the flames were moving toward the prow.

Her mother was right.

Gail hesitated for just a moment. But it was too alluring, and she left him.

Whispers filled his ears, garbled and overlapping

Glen continued forwards until he reached the candle.

Reaching out, he touched it.

“No,” he snarled. “I’ll never be done. Never!”

She chuckled. "I'm honestly shocked you didn't pass from some of those experiments. They were... very brutal, to put it simply. Same with the monster you say cares for you"

He pulled his pistol up, aiming it directly for her and pulling the trigger. Three times. "Enough out of you," he muttered

"Hmph."

He picked Terry's family out of the crowd and brought them forward.

"How about now?"

She snapped it between her fingers. There was a scream, and the thread stopped glowing. She grinned wickedly.

He vanished into a fine mist.

"No--no, wait!" She got off her swing and searched for him frantically. "It's not like that!"

Five sat down on the deck and wrapped her arms around her knees, staring at the still-spreading flames. She could feel their heat.

He chuckled darkly. “What does it matter? What does any of it matter?? What’s coming is worse than death. I’ll kill you. I’ll find a way.”

"I doubt that."

He unceremoniously tossed Terry's family into the cage.

"Change of plans, you'll stay here. Bob, you're going in his place."

He panted, dropping the gun to the ground, shaking. “I- I’m sorry. I don’t- I-I don’t-“ he stammered, trying to apologize to Five but not finding the words

It's n-not your tree, it's- he cut himself off.

. . . Why did they leave? he asked instead.

Bob, who was barely conscious, thought something along the lines of a defeated whatever.

“What are you— no!” Terry screamed. “No, Dont hurt them!”

He cast some silvery metal onto Bob, where it liquefied and started healing him.
