Terry swallowed hard and glanced at the cage, which was mostly full of children. “I… I… me,” he managed. “Don’t hurt them. Please. Just punish me.”

He got no farther before Terry jumped at him, screaming about betraying his countrymen and being a monster, and pummeled him soundly.

She grinned--it was somehow much realer than any of the other ones she'd smiled. "It does get lonely, now that nobody's around anymore."

Her ribs cracked. 

That’s what it felt like to Five, at least. Her gaze dropped to the deck, where the flames were moving toward the prow.
