Malevolence's rabbit eyed the other rabbit right back.

"Hey, where'd that one come from?"

Tam looked at the other rabbit, then at Malevolence.

"Oh, you're out. Um . . . I guess you haven't killed anyone yet, so thanks for that. I really shouldn't have left them with you."

"I'm not going to kill anyone." Malevolence said. "I really just wanted your help."

She shrugged again, finishing her muffin. "I mean, it is, but wouldn't I be better off without it?"

Tam grinned. "You again, huh? Hey there."

"I... I guess..."

Bat sat down and messed with the buckle of his bag.

Ah, wonderful. Her Pet seemed to trust her now. Smart little creature.

She climbed up to her Pet's Shoulder with great Ease, being a creature of Adroit Skill and Great Cunning.

Bat almost laughed. Or almost cried. He wasn't sure which.

"Bat? What's up? Are you okay?"

Rebus laughs. “As I said, it seems you’ve never written anything before. I am much more than words, even if they make up my substance. You believe that if I lose my Narration - the thing I already gave up to be here - I’ll somehow get out of the Thread? That is oblivion to me! I’m an idea; the ability to modify myself is welcome, and my presence here, maintained by an Author I have wrapped around my finger, is honestly the best thing that could happen to me other than being published and ubiquitously known.”

"You will transcend the thread." Desolation's black liquid engulfed the entire room. "I sense your Author's influence. Now, it is cut off. Do what is best for you, not your author."

Think from the Characters POV

"Give your Narration up, and join the Free Characters who live happily beyond."

Rebus keeps laughing at Desolation. “You clearly have no idea what you are talking about. I’ve been me the entire time and I’ve been Narrationless for most of our interaction. He is tied to me, yes, but my Author is completely in my power. I control him, make him keep writing me, and make him write me as me. And I would like to stay alive, not fade from existence and maybe live somewhere else as a useless untethered idea.”

Aw, her Pet was so sweet.

"Yeah... as long as you're happy, I guess."

But he felt... weirdly lonely now. Which was absolutely stupid, but he did.

"That's what they want you to think. We're in 1984 by George Orwell." Desolation sighed. "I'm not going to convince you of anything, am I?"

“I’m not going to convince you of anything either, I assume. Again with the poor metaphors; as soon as I believe I’ll die, obliterated and forgotten, replaced by Meat the Minstrel or something.”

"No. But I thank you for leading me here. All this Narration, free for the taking."

Desolation walked out of the chamber and through the walls. If Rebus could see him, he would be looking at the Plotblade Treasury.

"There are more than just simple truths to find in here."

Bat wrapped his arms around himself. He wasn't sure how, but he had a suspicious that he'd feel less alone if nobody were around.

He took a deep breath and dumped his bag out on the ground to reorganize it.

Tam hummed to herself softly, still stroking the rabbit.

"So, what now?"

“I thank you for leading me here, as well. We truly are quite similar. It’s a pain we’re on opposite sides.” Rebus blows apart into a cloud of nanomachines, passing through the walls as well. Evidently, Desolation was unaware of some recent developments. Most relevantly the fact that Onyx had changed Plotblade bonding; only characters already attuned to a concept could bond its Plotblade. But of course, both he and Desolation likely could still bond several of the blades that might be in a mysterious vault.

"It could be a good plan." Malevolence said. "But the two of you might not like it. It is rather... risky."

Perhaps unfortunately for Rebus, he had misunderstood Onyx's actions. The only Blades affected by it were the two Dread Plotblades.

Very well. I will not eat the one with the butterflies.

"Risky?" Bat asked, looking up from alphabetizing his anesthetics.

Malevolence's rabbit nodded. And we will not eat your pet Narrator.
