"You seemed like a person. You know, an actual person. With likes and dislikes and actual emotions. Now you're just... unnerving. I don't trust unnerving." She set the machine down.

"Oh. Do you think that's why Bat seemed so different?"

What's wrong? Rose said you're acting weird because of what I did?

Oh, no. I'm glad you're happy. I'll be back soon--- I don't know if I'll be able to find chicken salad.

Not in an empty warehouse like this. He leaned back against the metal wall and drew in the thick dust on the ground.

I could just make some, y'know. Where are you?

I'll be right back, he promised again, and switched off the radio.

He stood up and walked to the door of the warehouse, pushing it open to reveal a full galaxy of whirling stars, so bright they made him squint. The warehouse, unattached, floated in the middle of an enormous empty sky.

He sat down in the doorway, letting his legs hang out over nothing. He'd have to ask Rose where she'd found this place--- it had been one of the settings on her compass.

It was beautiful, a kind of lonely he'd never really felt before. And it felt somehow more eternal than all the chasms he'd grown up in.

Bat? Bat? Are you- nevermind. She sighed.

"Guess he doesn't want to talk to me."

She summoned a plate of chicken salad and a fork, offering it to Rose. "Want some?"

Rose just stared at her in disgust. "Ew, no. I hate chicken."

"What? Then why'd you tell Bat to go get some?"

She started eating the chicken salad.

. . . Her Author was suddenly really hungry.

"Because Bat needed to go get some dumb chicken salad."

"So he's the one who likes it? Oh." She took another bite.

"What do you like?"

Rose sighed, exasperated. "I like roast. The really good, soft kind that falls apart when you put a fork in it. Especially with a lot of pepper."

Tam summoned some really tender, peppery roast and offered it to Rose.

She grinned and began to eat it. "Thanks."

The rabbit condescended to nibble on her Pet's chicken salad.

It was Quite Delectable.

"You're welcome."

She grinned and summoned a separate bowl of chicken salad, setting it in front of the rabbit.

Aw, her Pet was Considerate! She'd chosen well.

"Where the heck did you get that bunny?" Rose asked.

The Bunny in Question looked up. Hmm, that human looked Rather Delectable.

Tam shrugged. "Not sure. He- she? Not sure. It just started following me."

The bunny informed the narrator with some magic that she was indeed female.

"Aw. It's cute."

She kept eating.

"So . . . when do you think Bat will be back? He didn't really seem to want to talk to me."
