I'm biased here as I am a fan of the director, but I liked Suzume a lot. The protagonist is interesting and I think it has the best music of the bunch. I'm still not over how good Sky Over Tokyo is.

I listen to Sparkle, Dream Lantern, and Nandemonaiya constantly xD Highly recommend the recordings of RADWIMPS + an orchestra playing the soundtrack live over the movie, it's amazing. I also really love the Frieren soundtrack, and Suzume's is also very good Only thing I don't like about Makoto Shinkai's movies (very general spoilers for Your Name/Suzume) Spoiler Is the romances fall a bit flat for me. Like they're sweet and all, but for me the character motivation for them to fall in love isn't really there for me. I love everything else tho xD

Retsam Posted January 23 Posted January 23 If you mean OP/EDs, r/anime did more-or-less yearly "best opening" and "best ending" tournaments for awhile, their results were: "Again" from FMAB "Hacking to the Gate" from Steins;Gate "Unravel" from Tokyo Ghoul "Flyers" from Death Parade "Cruel Angels' Thesis" from Evangelion "Tank" from Cowboy Bebop "Renai Circulation" from Monogatari "Guren no Yumiya" from Attack on Titan "99" from Mob Psycho 100 "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" from Ya Boy Kongming! "Idol" from Oshi no Ko It's a pretty good list of some of the top-of-all-time OPs. 1

I tried (or sampled) all of those, and my faves are Cruel Angel's Thesis (I already listened to it before tho), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and Idol. The rest I either didn't like or didn't listen to fully and don't know if I do. Also I like Hacking the Gate I think. Thanks!
Retsam Posted January 23 Posted January 23 3 hours ago, Theory said: Thx. Idk the terminology lol. OP means opening theme, ED means ending theme. As opposed to "OST" which is just the general soundtrack for the show. e.g. Frieren has a great OST ("Zoltraak" is probably the most popular/famous track), but OST it's not usually what people mean by "anime songs". Though there are also "insert songs" - vocal songs in the middle of an episode - like God Knows which Eluvianii mentioned. --- Of the list earlier, I think Unravel is my favorite musically; ended up liking the song a lot more than the anime Tokyo Ghoul, and ended up listing to it (and various remixes/alternative versions) for ages afterwards. But it's hard to judge because a lot of times how much I like the song is influenced by how much I like the anime. (e.g. I love Hacking to the Gate, but that has to be a least partially because Steins;Gate is a top-5 anime for me)

So I looked it up and it sounds super cool, but also it's probably depressing and I'm not too keen on those stuff. Is it? I really like it - it's the sort of show that's all over the place tonally. It's heavy in some places, but also very funny (especially, IMO, the English dub), the main leads have really good chemistry; the time-travel plot actually largely makes sense (eventually) and has some really good twists and turns, and it has a really satisfying ending. It can be divisive - a lot of the characters are flawed and a lot of people find the main character a bit difficult (but that's even more true in-universe: that's kind of the point of his character), and there's one particular plot point that annoys a lot of people. But still, I've seen a lot of stuff, and it's pretty high on my list. I used to be able to rattle off a "top-5 favorite anime" but at this point it's probably changed quite a bit and I'd have to figure out what to keep and what to bump... Steins;Gate is definitely pretty high up though. 2
ParaTulip fae/faer (declines as she/her) Posted January 24 Posted January 24 (edited) If we're talking about setting animation to music: The Daikon opening video is a legend for a reason. Edited January 24 by ParaTulip Sorry, the video embedded bugged up the editor.
NovaRay He/him Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Technically this isn’t an anime but it is a parody. It’s We parodied the entirety of JJK by Gabfr. Some of my favorite jokes are you wouldn’t get it it’s an inside joke, piercing blood never misses, Sukuna the binding vow merchant, and ahh a ladder I can just climb that. There were also just really good emotional moments like the Mahoraga father flashback and Jogo realizing he had someone who already loved him.
Usseewa ✾ She♡Her ✾ Posted January 25 Posted January 25 Looks like I was actually listening to Fatima from Steins;Gate 0, not Hacking to the Gate. So, I loved Fatima, but I don't think I like Hacking to the Gate that much. I just thought I was listening to Hacking, not Fatima. Cuz the song titles are in Japanese.
Eluvianii he/him Posted January 26 Posted January 26 Oh, while we're on that topic, gotta mention "Here" and "Nemurasareta Lineage", both from The Ancient Magus' Bride. There are a lot of shows out there so I can't be sure but the latter might be my current favorite opening. Plus the opening animation itself is amazing. (incomprehensible contextless spoilers warning I suppose)
Usseewa ✾ She♡Her ✾ Posted January 26 Posted January 26 Anyone seen the anime series Erased? Was it any good?
Retsam Posted January 26 Posted January 26 (edited) It's pretty good - not perfect, but a solid thriller and a complete story in 12 episodes which is always nice. TBH, not sure there's much else I can say without spoilers. Though, speaking of opening themes, it's rare because the opening theme was an existing song before the anime came out, (most opening themes are made for the anime nowadays) and was actually a song I had listed to a lot - Asian Kung Fu Generation was the first band I really got 'into'. Was very weird getting to the end of the first episode where it plays and being like... wait, what? Edited January 26 by Retsam
Eluvianii he/him Posted January 26 Posted January 26 2 hours ago, Theory said: Anyone seen the anime series Erased? Was it any good? I'm gonna drop the most generic response here. The anime is great, but the manga is way better. The anime is gorgeous and the atmosphere is unmatched, plus the songs are iconic, so it's definitely worth a watch. But it also cuts a big chunk of the story, including replacing the long final arc for a half-episode-long version of it. This is a show that should have been 24 episodes, or at least like 18 or something. The story does not fit in 12.
+Slowswift Posted January 27 Posted January 27 (edited) Forgive me for being a little late to the discussion, but I'd like to chime in with some thoughts of my own. Of course, as has already been well-established, Your Name is amazing, especially in regards to its soundtrack, which is to this day one of the few I'll listen to outside of the film. (Sparkle is my favorite, and is dear enough to me that I actually try to avoid listening to it regularly so that I don't ruin it for myself.) Shinkai's next films still rank as some of my favorites, even if they don't hit quite the same as Your Name. @Theory, if you haven't already, I also recommend Garden of Words. It's much shorter, ~45 mins, but is in every other respect equal to Shinkai's other work. (It was actually my introduction to him, via an AMV somebody made from it and one of my favorite songs.) Also, if/when you do, see if you can spot the characters from Garden in Your Name. (The Your Name cast also makes an appearance in Weathering With You!) Also, regarding anime music, that's honestly half the reason I like anime so much. I can second most recommendations already brought forward, and I'll add one of my own: Sunny by Yorushika. Actually, I'll just recommend Yorushika full-stop: they're one of my favorite bands in general, not just in Japanese. I was a fan well before Frieren aired and was delighted to discover that Sunny was used as one of the openings. I could go on about anime music, but maybe I'll save that for later. I've been meaning to make a playlist of my favorites for a while, anyways. (One last thing--Steins;Gate slaps. It's an all-timer for me and I haven't even finished it yet.) --- In other news, I finally got around to watching Bocchi the Rock! and I don't know why it took me so long. It's exactly as good as I'd heard--better, even. 10/10, no notes, and I'm entirely smitten with Seika. Edited January 27 by Slowswift 1
