Will you read ahead in Words of Radiance?

  1. 1. Will you skip ahead in Words of Radiance? If you will, where will you start?

    • No. I didn't read the excerpts from Tor and I avoided spoilers. The whole book will be fresh to me and I don't need to skip ahead.
    • No. Even though I read all the excerpts on Tor, I prefer to read the story in order.
    • Yes. I'm going to start at Chapter 7. What happened to Shallan and Jasnah?
    • Yes. I can't believe they ended chapter twelve where they did. I'm skipping to the next Kaladin chapter as soon as I get my hands on the book.
    • Yes. I want to read the Lift's interlude first, because it is just awesome.
    • Yes. I want to read Ym's interlude first, because I want to know how it ends.
    • Yes. I want to read the rest of Taravangian's interlude first. I'm dying to know what Tor left out.
    • Yes. I'm going to read the ending first, because I like to know where the story is going.

My mother always reads the end first.

I used to ridicule this behavior, but now I accept it as I've come to believe that if knowing the ending ruins a book/movie it isn't worth reading/watching in the first place.

I've seen this question on other forums for other books. And I didn't read through the 3 pages of posts, but I honestly can't fathom skipping to the end. The whole idea seems to fit somewhere on the spectrum between uncomfortably abnormal and downright heretical to me.

My wife would agree with you, but I've always maintained that the Journey is more important than the Destination (see what I did there lol?). So I don't mind skipping to the end, cause I love seeing how it gets there.

I knew who killed Dumbledore before I read "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince". I still enjoyed the book. I also knew much of the plot of TWoKs before I read the book and knew that Kaladin and his bridgemen would end up as Dalinar's bodyguards, though I didn't know how it would happen. I still loved that book so much that I read it again right after I finished it. I've reread other books, including some of Sanderson's, but never right after I finished them.

I will not read the end of WoR before I read the rest of the book, but a good story will not be ruined if the ending is spoiled.

A truly good book won't be ruined by knowing the ending but it can definitely diminish the wow factor if plot twists are an important part of the writing. I seriously doubt I'd have had quite as many "oh snap!" moments (no pun intended) reading the mistborn series had I known everything about The Lord Ruler beforehand.

Oh Sadeas's betrayal completely surprised me. I was disappointed I didn't see it coming, but I'm glad I didn't know. Also there is something so symbolically right about how Dalinar trades his shardblade and I'm glad didn't know he would do so before hand.

I read Warbreaker and Elantris before I read Mistborn, so the twist about the Lord Ruler didn't surprise me. Maybe that's why Sadeas's betrayal did. Sadeas is far less complicated and far more predicable than other characters by Sanderson. His excerpt on Tor didn't disappoint me because it fit him perfectly. I'm hoping the wife is more interesting but I digress.

Still, it is good to go into a story fresh.

I'm going to reread WoK and the sample chapters the days before it comes out, so I can start it at Chapter 7 with everything still fresh in my head. I haven't decided whether I'll read 8-14 beforehand or not.

I want the story in order in its entirety from start to finish.  If it hadn't been for my desire to participate in the discussions here, I probably would not have read the pre-release stuff.  I personally think that 10+% of the book is a lot to release as a teaser.

I'm not too bothered by the release because Tor deliberately released parts of the book which would not spoil anything majorly. Most of the released material is character or plot building but not a huge amount else.

I use a Kindle and I'm too lazy to make the effort to skip ahead on it. and I'd rather read it all together as I'm currently catching up on my reread of Way of Kings and I'm also reading the final Mageborn book by Michael Manning so I feel like I'll forget everything. In addition, I feel like my reading will pick up a whole lot more that I missed with a fresh read of Way of Kings on my mind.

Also, I'm ordering the hardcover along with the Kindle, so I'll be happy to refer to larger drawings once I get the book in the mail because I'm currently doing that when I'm looking at my kindle. I also can't wait to see the imprint on the front cover too. I was thinking about getting a Windrunner tattoo but I started to realize that if there are ten books, I would hope that there would be a full-art symbol for each of the KR on each of the books. I would rather get a tattoo for the order of KR to which I feel the greatest connection.

And so, untold millions screamed out in pain, and then were suddenly silenced. I hope you're happy.

Alcatraz speaks out on the subject.
