  1. I read somewhere that the trellists liked night versus day, which made me think of White Sand, because the magic system there was based on night and day, at least I think. I haven't read it myself.
  2. I remember reading in an article Brandon wrote that WoT covers about the same length of time as the Mistborn Trilogy. If I can remember, it was a year or a year and a half. But now I can't find the article or the exact amount of time he said. Does anyone know what that time period was or the article he said it?
  3. I know I'll probably get backlash for this but Game of Thrones. I've been told many times the books are great. The first 3 times I tried to read it, I couldn't get 100 pages in. I more recently tried to read the book at a request from a friend and made it further. I was happy it was starting to get good 60-70% of the way through but then it stopped being good again and stopped reading at about 80%. I don't think I'll try it again. I'll watch the show but the book was not engaging enough. I also couldn't get into the Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks because of how poorly it was written. Although, for context, I had just finished The Name of the Wind for the first or second time so the ability of the writing may have been skewed due to Rothfuss's genius. And I thoroughly enjoy the Black Prism series by Brent Weeks. So maybe I could give it another try.
  4. I think Shallan had already reached at least the third oath (second unique one) before we even see anything of her since she used Pattern to kill her mother. I feel like the sprent can't become a shardblade until after the bond is extremely secure (so to speak). If you notice, Kaladin tried to use Shardblades in the past but couldn't and Syl did not try to become a blade or offer that to him. But once he stated the third oath, it was immediate. I theorize that spren can't transform into blades until after the third oath. I think it's possible the others become radiant when they speak their oaths but we haven't seen too much of it. The only other oath I can think of was Dalinar at the end of WoR.
  5. I definitely think we'll get some kind of Szeth redemption. For the most of the last 2 books, he has been doing all he did because he thought he was Truthless, but after finding out he had been correct, he really didn't have a chance to do anything about it. I think with his new life, he'll be able to redeem himself in some way. I could definitely see him teaming up with the new KR in the future or at least finding some redemption personally. Also can't wait for his past to be revealed in the next book. Side note: I remember Brandon saying he was planning on doing pasts of characters even if they had died. I find it funny that the same will be happening with Szeth, even though he is once again alive.
  6. So I read the first 4 pages of this thread and didn't see anyone post what my theory is, so I'm posting it here. So I was thinking as I read the book but before I got to the epilogue that Jasnah may have been able to heal her body via soulcasting or create a new body using soulcasting but I felt that might be too complex for a novice to intermediate soulcaster (or even if it is possible at all). Given the fact that she is alive and we have more information from the epilogue, I present the following. First of all, we know from seeing Shallan's viewpoint of several times when Jasnah Soulcasts that her physical body remains but we know from Shallan's viewpoint and input from Pattern that you need to visit the cognitive realm to convince something to change its form. (I am a stick) So when you Soulcast, your body remains in the Physical Realm and your mind (and probably your soul) travel to the Cognitive Realm. I think it's possible that Elsecalling requires a visit to Shadesmar just as soulcasting does. I also think it's possible for the mind to live on in Shadesmar even after the body dies. I think Jasnah was dead for sure, especially since she had a blank stare and they stabbed her a second time. I think it's possible Jasnah brought herself permanently to Shadesmar, then elsecalled elsewhere. When she emerged, she somehow recreated her body through the Elsecalling ability (which is kind of similar to sci-fi teleporting). It would have been ragged as described but I think her physical body may have been healed. I think she views herself as a specific way and so the body she inhabited became that (which I think might be similar to the earth-bond in the Mageborn books by Michael G Manning for those who have read it). I also think she was in Shadesmar only cognitively and was unable to return to the Physical Realm very easily because of Hoid's quote here: So I'm pretty certain she was not able to simply return to her body, or even a soulcasted body. I think she needed the spren's help to be able to get back to the Physical Realm. EDIT: Filled in my assumptions about Soulcasting and the Cognitive Realm
  7. So I loved it first of all. Second, my boyfriend and I were pretty much at the same pace with the book but I shot ahead closer to the end. But somewhere in part 4 I was thinking about how Soulcasting works and how the body remains in the Physical Realm but the Mind goes to the Cognitive Realm. And I was thinking of a (somewhat far-fetched) way that Jasnah could still be alive. I theorized that she could have either soulcast her own body, somehow healing the wounds, or simply (but not really) soulcasting a new body somehow. And I'm so glad I was right that Jasnah is alive but I was completely wrong about how. My question for that is: Did Jasnah elsecall to get out of Shadesmar and her Mind stepped out of the Cognitive Realm, which basically had her body intact? It's kind of weird....I hope we get some answers about that. Also, I remember reading a theory on here or on TWG back in the day theorizing that Shardblades were actually spren and I completely laughed that off. Completely taken aback that that is actually the case. The fact that the living spren/shardblades can morph for their needs is really cool. loved that. I'm just wondering about Shallan's oaths as LIghtbringer. I don't remember her saying them. But the fact that Pattern has been with her from a young age may mean she said them a long time ago. For Kaladin to get Syl back and for her to change into a blad, he had to speak the second oath, so if the same is true for all orders of KR, it's possible Shallan has given at least 2 of her oaths already. So the fact that Szeth was revived I think is really cool but what is the deal with the sword? Who brought it to Roshar? And I'd like to think that Honor's splintering by Odium may have taken place on the Shattered Plains, causing the shattering. I love the fact that the plains are a cymatic field and that quote mentioning the cymatic even that caused them to shatter. Also, Zahel? He mentioned that the storms are heavily Invested so he knows much more than meets the eye. Could he be 17th Shard? EDIT: Also, I cried. I cried in the scene when Shallan and Kaladin talk about their pasts. It was so heartbreaking and relieving at the same time and I loved it but I cried. Thank you, Brandon for making this possible. I love when I cry reading books because the author did something incredibly right. The only other times I've cried reading a fiction book are both of Pat Rothfuss's books.
  8. Will 17th Shard be getting a Shardhunt code like we did for the Steelhunt? I'm totally ok with hunting around for the reward again. I just am not near an airport or a signing event and would love the opportunity to get a code. I assume it's for exclusive content again.
  9. Ok. this quote is from I-6 in WoK: So from this, I think he got the blade from the shamans rather than from the parshendi, since they would take it back when he was dead. EDIT: And I just noticed you haven't read the preview chapters. I hope what I stated is not too spoilery but I'll still put it in spoilers for you.
  10. Thank you for the Doctor Who reference. And I'm wearing this shirt today too, which I think is great. My first thought was Soulcasting to stone, but we really won't know until 2 weeks from today. (can't believe it's so close)
  11. I ordered the hardcover because I need a hardcover collection of all my books, but I'm getting the kindle version to read (plus it'll be available to read sooner than the book will arrive via amazon). I'll use the hardcover to reference details about artworks I can't see details of in the ebook. But since I got my Kindle, I've found it easier to read. I love saving quotes with the ebook. I'm doing that with my reread of WoK right now and I'm highlighting references of surgebinding that I never noticed before, Hoid references, and other signs of foreshadowing. I plan on doing the same thing with WoR. It makes it much easier to post theories with supporting quotes here too.
  12. I use a Kindle and I'm too lazy to make the effort to skip ahead on it. and I'd rather read it all together as I'm currently catching up on my reread of Way of Kings and I'm also reading the final Mageborn book by Michael Manning so I feel like I'll forget everything. In addition, I feel like my reading will pick up a whole lot more that I missed with a fresh read of Way of Kings on my mind. Also, I'm ordering the hardcover along with the Kindle, so I'll be happy to refer to larger drawings once I get the book in the mail because I'm currently doing that when I'm looking at my kindle. I also can't wait to see the imprint on the front cover too. I was thinking about getting a Windrunner tattoo but I started to realize that if there are ten books, I would hope that there would be a full-art symbol for each of the KR on each of the books. I would rather get a tattoo for the order of KR to which I feel the greatest connection.
  13. Ok, so it looks to me like this information has not been posted, so I'd like to chip in to this topic. This passage states that the heralds trained each of the orders, so they must have had those powers in order to train their respective orders. Syl stated she was the only honorspren to come over from the Cognitive Realm. We know Kaladin is a Windrunner and that Szeth has Windrunner powers. But he has no spren. Could the honorblades impart the surgebinding abilities to their holders? That would explain Szeth having the Windrunner powers without the Nahel bond. I had created a related topic here in which I posited that Szeth was a Herald. It seems more likely that he simply has the honorblade. Edit: And if anyone could tell me how I can get the chapters into the quote heading, that would be great.
  14. Ok. That's understandable. Great input. Could he have some sort of amnesia? How in the world could he have his powers if he does not have the Nahel bond? Edit: How do I do spoiler tags? We could move the post to the WoR forum. I didn't realize there was a whole forum for WoR.
  15. That's what I'm saying. So without the Nahel bond, how does his power manifest? Could he be one of the Heralds?
  16. I have no idea if this has been though of and I don't know if it's right but the readings from WoR have me confused so I'm just going to hash out some thoughts and see what everyone thinks... That's my theory, or I'm just trying to figure out what I'm reading.
  17. I went to the rules page, found what appeared to be a clue (for number 2), entered the hidden word given (with the capital letter and without) and didn't get it. Any help? I feel like I'm at the right page but it doesn't want to give me anything...
  18. I'm trying to do the shardhunt to get access to the code. (I don't want to be cheap and ask for a code) But I'm stuck and wondering where I can post/view hints for the shardhunt. Definitely want to see the content but I love a good challenge. It will make it more satisfying for me when I finally get it. Not sure if there is a shardhunt thread or not, so I though I'd post here. PM or reply is fine. EDIT: oops. typo
