You guys should see the Nature Valley bar I'm going to substitute for my lunch so I can stay in the office and read these. It doesn't look delicious, but nothing is as satisfying as fresh content!

I brought lunch today knowing this has been the pattern for the last 2 weeks!

Smoky tendrils of luminescence rose from the stone. “We probably don’t need to make Rock hang from it,” Kaladin said. “If you need a baseline, why not just use how long the stone remains there on its own?”

“Well, that’s less fun,” Sigzil said. “But very well.”

Yes. :P

has anyone got to the last bit of Kal's chapter? damnation it gave me goosebumps. Amaram is not gonna be happy when he turns around and see's him.

ok the missing chapters are really annoying now. I'd rather not have had any chapters if you are going to leave out all the interesting ones.

Reactions:

10:

Dang that's a surreal scene. And it seems that Shallan's mother is dead by a shardblade, and she blames herself? Who else thinks the dead man had the shardblade and killed her mom with it, and Shallan killed him and that's how she got her blade. She blames herself for not being fast enough, maybe.

12: "The murderer's of my husband..." WHICH ONE? Gavilar or Dalinar? Or both, maybe.

Kaladin's doing good, but he needs more practice if he's going to walk and walls and beat Szeth.

Also, how would Rock like wrestling Lift?

And damnation, Amaram is here.

I-1:

Malen and femalen as the genders for the Listeners? What's up with that?

Why does Eshonai need to talk to Dalinar?

Is she trying to attract creationspren to their art so they can bond into Artform?

Are Shen or the Parshendi spies in nimbleform? Dullform? Slaveform?

Can slaveform parsh not communicate with the song?

And they did stop Gavilar from bringing back their dark gods? I thought previous readings of this interlude said it didn't work?

So she wants to sue for peace?

"It could have been an Honorblade." Is that confirmation that Szeth can use surgebinding because he has an honorblade?

And stormform can summon and control highstorms? Wow.

So the spies are in dullform.

And the Parshendi have been in hiding for centuries.

14:

Adolin doesn't want to offend the dead Almighty?

The ship is a week late, so something happened with that cliffhanger. He doesn't think the betrothal will work, but almost wishes it will?

And what was Danlan's juicy gossip that made him break thinks off with her?

Watcha out Sadeas, Adolin has it in for you.

Salinor had to touch the ruby to break the bond with his blade? Did Dalinar do that?

And Renarin gets a blade.

I love Tor for posting so much of the book already and yet i hate myself for reading it.  Absolutely fantastic read.

Couple initial thoughts -

  • I think this has probably been mentioned before in previous threads but it almost seems like Shallan created a Shardblade or summoned one, somehow. Shallan killed her mother and later her own father.  I love her as a character but what is she?
  • The Kal & Bridge Four training scene was awesome but I got chills when Amaram showed up.  I really want to know what this does to the dynamic between Kal & Dalinar.  Not to mention Adolin who doesn't trust Kal to begin with.
  • Ironstance.  Adolin showing off his badassery.  But I love how the Thrill faded from him after the duel, Dalinar's influence on him weakening his connection to Odium perhaps?
  • The Alethi are their own worst enemy.  Constantly fighting amongst themselves (Navani's bit at the beginning of the chapter) while the Parshendi learn to summon or control highstorms.  Which brings up a good question, I think.  Dalinar's visions are tied to the storms so if the Parshendi attack the camp with a Highstorm does Dalinar go "lights out" thus depriving the Alethi of one of their finest generals?

So good, either way.  Now I need to pretend I didn't read any of this and I'm not super amped for March 4th.

Brief thoughts as I read:

Red Carpet Once White:

  • Shallan murdered someone or did her father murder someone??? You can tell I am confused because I use multiple question marks
  • A man is bleeding but the woman has horrible eyes? One Shardblade kill, one... not Shardblade kill?
  • What's glowing in that there safe?

Hero:

  • "I would like to know what wind brought about their sudden, inexplicable transformation." Ooh! Ooh! How about Dalinar trying to commit genocide on their entire race? That might be a good reason for them to have transformed.
  • "Well, that’s less fun,” Sigzil said. Oh Sigzil. I like you.
  • Sticking Lopen to the wall? :D Also Lopen lost his arm as a child?
  • Ah, his arm was eaten!
  • Also, Kaladin does not stick to his own Pressure, and he can suck it back in. So much for the specialized-Investiture theory.
  • AHAHAHAHA GO KALADIN GO
  • Oh come on not even one stab?

Narak:

  • New chapter icon. Shardblade? Shalash icons, interesting.
  • Oh of course it's Eshonai. I don't think I ever read her interlude, though.
  • Rhythm of Resolve. Sounds like Order 8's song. (Resolute/Determined are their attributes)
  • Rhythm of Mourning. Order 4's song? Or I guess there's just a billion songs.
  • Rhythm of Excitement. Yeah, can't place this one.
  • Rhythm of the Lost, not the same as one of mourning? Praise, Skepticism, Peace, Irritation, Amusement,
  • Oh Eshonai, your plan didn't work at all, did it?
  • “Perhaps not. It could have been an Honorblade.” Szeth as having an Honorblade confirmed. Fascinating. I'm surprised to get confirmation that Honorblades granted Surgebinding so early. And of course, that means that Darkness was the one who went back for his Blade, since he can invest. Appropriate. Or perhaps Heralds can Invest regularly and their Blades just increase the strength of their Surgebinding. Oh, and I suppose Shallash didn't take hers back (note to self: look up whether or not it was just ONE herald that took back their blade), so the Gavilar-is-alive theory weakens since she might not be able to Surgebind.
  • “If the Surgebinders have returned,” Venli continued, “we must strive for something meaningful, something that can ensure our freedom." So... find a really powerful form (full of Investiture to block Odium?) and then you don't get controlled? Neat.
  • “Enough people of that form,” Venli said, “could control a highstorm, or even summon one.” EVERSTORM HO
  • “Most of the forms are related to them in some way,” Venli said. Previous speculation about the songs being of certain orders might not be wrong?
  • “We could negotiate with the Alethi,” Eshonai said. Maybe. You couldn't have a few months back. Kinda misguided on Eshonai's part, but I suppose Sanderson has to try and make the Parshendi more sympathetic?

Ironstance:

  • Adolin, double Kalak. Ooh.
  • Adolin talking to his sword? My initial reaction was 'what' then 'huh that's kinda adorable or would be if he were thirteen years old'.
  • "Pailiah". Darn, no more calling her Palah, guys. Also, the P makes an H sound (to make it symmetrical). I like it. Yasnah, Haleeah.
  • "Battah" Oh Sanderson, do keep giving us these names. Also, not Beteb/Batab? It was Batar before. Did the B become an H too? Maybe I was wrong on the P->H.
  • "But storm it, that one was not his fault. The things she’d said to her friends…" Ooh what did she say, Adolin? Making fun of your skills in bed (assuming that you ever managed to get that far)?
  • Ironstance, explaining the double Kalak.
  • Another gem on a Shardblade pommel. It flashed when the bond broke. Interesting.
  • Renarin gets a Blade hooray!
  • Also Adolin is totes enjoying that Thrill too much.

I WANT WORDS OF RADIANCE also cliffhanger still :(

I'm pretty sure in WoK Dalinar said there wasn't any way they could be married, the Ardents wouldn't allow it.

AHHHHHHHHHHH

So, thoughts:

Kaladin seeing Amaram... lkhl;h;lg;

"They have surgebinders" "It could have been an honorblade"  well some theorists will be very happy with that.

And spren stuff, they see them coming instead of just appearing so maybe they are like Rock?

Adolin talking to his sword, hmm...

Adolin and the Thrill... Now I'm worrying.

Note that chapter 14 is in Part Two in the book, as evidenced by the new style of epigraphs. So this sample is a little out of order. It's pretty cool how the Parshendi call themselves the listeners, in my opinion.

Also I edited the spelling error in the topic title here.

He turned and reached for his helm from the last armorer. It was Renarin.

“You ate chicken?” Renarin asked as Adolin took the helm.

“For breakfast.”

From this quote I am theorizing that Adolin is the Roshar incarnate of Wade Boggs!

I thought it was interesting that the Parshendi spy on humans using dullform, "It was a form of low intelligence, low capacity. They used it now to spy on the humans (Interlude 1)" It seems that this form must be very similar to slaveform if they are able to pass off as spies. I think that we can now safely assume that Shen is a Parshendi spy.

Maybe not, maybe by his relationship with Bridge 4 he is on the verge of discovering a new form, friendform?

Interesting that in the Adolin chapter, while thinking about Kaladin, there is no referance to Amaram.

Surely something had to happen in chapter 11 or 14 for some kind of resolution. Also interesting that Amaram apparently wasn't at the duel....

Also interesting how she saw the anger spren coming from a distance*. The anger was already there, so the spren didn't cause it.

I also believe that Shallan killed the guy who killed her mother. Her blade had to come from somewhere.
