The New 17S Comes Tonight

Tonight, at 9pm Pacific time, we will at long last update 17th Shard's forum software to a new version. The site maintenance--where the forums will not be operational--may last as long as twelve hours, but should be no more than that. We'll be updating you on Twitter. It's a huge update to the site and our forum software. Here are some things to get excited about:

Responsive Design / New Mobile Site: The current mobile site sucks, but the new site has a fully responsive design, which means that every feature on the desktop site will be on mobile. Multiquotes on mobile? You got it. Everything you want on mobile, you will have. It's really awesome.

New Desktop Design: The legendary Will (Shivertongue on the site) appeared in the room without a sound, said nothing but handed over a flash drive, and had vanished by the time you looked up again. It's some pretty cool new art, though.

The legendary Will (Shivertongue on the site) has come out of his coffin and created some amazing stuff. But it's really cool. Get excited.

Cosmere Q&A board: No more will need the Q&A thread. We will have a separate Cosmere Q&A board where people can upvote rate questions for visibility, and people can answer questions and rate the answers as well.

There's a lot of more minor stuff. (Undoing upvotes and downvotes, for one.) I hope you're excited. Compared to the new site, the current one is just... guh. I can't wait to show you all what's going on.

I know change will be hard. The editor in the new version will be quite a bit different, for one, but I think all the change will be worth it.

One thing that I want to let you know about is that in our current version, there is a distinction between Usernames (the thing you log in with) and Display Names. These will be merged in the new version, and you will just have a Display Name.

Does this mean that long, embarrassing list of former display names gets erased? Please say yes

most likely it gets pinned to and prominently displayed along side each of your posts to publicly display your shame to all who visit. (I have no idea)

Still exists but is not obvious on the profile.

That's actually not a good change, honestly, because some do try and obfuscate their douchery by changing their display names.

Ah, right, right. I was just thinking a wipe of the current list, but that makes total sense.

It is much more visually appealing and looks less dated/

Oh I see how it is, the new one is only slightly dated, apparently? :P Here I thought we were making modern stuff ;)

What are the requirements for a good WoB database?

We'd need a database which would allow those features:

  • properly organized categorization system - an improved version of tags
  • linking different WoBs together - like bundling together different WoBs about burning Hemalurgic spikes or all WoBs about Cohesion
  • marking RAFO's as 'revelaed' - when new information is revealed and RAFO becomes obsolete, by it by a new WoB or books. With a way to attach the new information
  • key word searching (I've got no idea how theoryland works, all searches return 0 results :( )
  • marking WoBs as outdated by a new WoB

I had more ideas, but I cannot recall them.

Of course, we'd need a way for normal users to add more WoBs. And a system to moderate those WoBs.

Also, as the launch of the new database would go, we'd need a system to add old WoBs into database. Since there is so much of them, I think that making a pop up appear once a day when a Sharder comes to the forums and asking to add "those five WoBs" with a link to the source and also asking to review (and probably edit) another five WoBs added by another Sharder.

Each added WoB would be reviewed three times, by different users.

If you have a highly formatted sig you may wish to save a copy of it. They tend to have extra spacing in the new version and I am having difficulty erasing them easily.
