ParadoxicalZen he/him Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 @TwiLyghtSansSparkles interesting news I got today. Back home, my friend told me he's working in the theatre where HP and the CC is being performed.

(Due to some things I've already ranted about, and spoilers that left a very bad taste in my mouth, I will need an extremely good reason to see that play, read it, or integrate it into my headcanons.) 1
Sunbird she/her Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 I feel the same way, Twi. In other news, I was highly amused to witness this scene at Wal-Mart today: Little girl: *points to green bell peppers* Green potatoes! Mother: No, Sweetie, those are peppers. Little girl: *points at carrots* Orange potatoes! *points at cucumbers* Green potatoes! Potato: it's the new catch-all term for vegetables. XD 2
The Honor Spren she/her Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 So, I'm an extra in Grease. But I want to be one of those extras with an interesting character who steals the show. So, I need a character arc. I've already decided that I want to carry a fantasy book (most likely Lord of the Rings) everywhere I go, and if I can pull it off, dance with it in the musical numbers. Do you guys have any ideas on how to make her more engaging without speaking lines? 1

XD If the number of angry Tumblrians and Tropers listing it under Hype Backlash is any indication, we're not alone, either. So does that mean every salad is a potato salad? Suddenly, potato salad doesn't sound so sketchy anymore…. Edited June 26, 2016 by TwiLyghtSansSparkles

The only time I've ever been in a musical was when I played oboe in the pit orchestra for my high school's production of "Once Upon a Mattress," so I have no experience to offer. But I love your idea of dancing with a big ole fantasy novel. 7 minutes ago, TwiLyghtSansSparkles said: So does that mean every salad is a potato salad? I've already decided that I want to carry a fantasy book (most likely Lord of the Rings) everywhere I go, and if I can pull it off, dance with it in the musical numbers. Do you guys have any ideas on how to make her more engaging without speaking lines? Think of the last funny background event (warning: link to TV Tropes) you really enjoyed. Analyze it. Decide what you loved about it, boil it down to its essence—and steal it for your character. Here's a hypothetical example: You enjoyed the "Where. Is. My. SUPER. SUIT?" argument from The Incredibles. It makes you giggle every time you see it, even though you've seen it a hundred times. The dialogue was hilarious, but what really made that scene was how the Omnidroid was rampaging through town, destroying buildings and scaring the pants off the police. You can see it through the window, complete with dramatic explosions. The Omnidroid's rampage didn't detract from Honey and Lucius' argument; on the other hand, it enhanced it. It enhanced it by heightening just how ridiculous the situation was: there's a literal death machine stomping through the residential district of a major city, and Honey is upset because the robot is ruining her date night. So, based on that train of thought, you could conclude that your favorite FBE worked not because it distracted from the main scenes, but because it added a layer of absurdity to them. Therefore, your character will add to the main scenes, doing something odd or silly that heightens the main action somehow. Now, those aren't the only guidelines you can or should use. There are many, many memorable FBEs, and people enjoy them for different reasons. You could be the Omnidroid of Grease, the fantasy nut whose antics heighten the big musical numbers. Or you could be the one who reacts to every major twist by sticking her nose in a book and raising her head with a terrified expression on her face. Point is, think of what you liked about FBEs, and then do your best to replicate that. 1

Sunbird she/her Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 Ok, so a recent Dinosaur Whiteboard comic prompted me to start browsing TV Tropes, and when I came to The Nudifier I was disappointed not to find the exploding teddy bears from Alcatraz vs the Shattered Lens mentioned in the Literature section of the examples list.

It has so much info. on what things in sci-fi would be like, meant as a tool for sci-fi authors. Just to give you an understanding of how in depth it is, here's just one page dedicated to mining. Now imagine several dozen pages like that (and counting). Subheadings include: ice mining, asteroid mining, lunar mining, martian mining, harvesting gas giants, and element bottlenecks (basically all about how people living on another planet could make up excess minerals not found on planet.) I think I've found the second most addictive site on the internet. It might even become the first, though TV Tropes is strong competition. EDIT: If you go to the bottom, and click the arrow to the next page, then you'll come to a page talking about NASA's attempt to build an inflatable space station. I find this absolutely hilarious. This happens to be one of my absolute favorite sites. It probably has nothing to do with the fact that I did physics in college (who are we kidding here - it totally does).

Seonid he/him Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 Take it from me - there's a lot of information on the site, but it's not TVTropes. Eventually you run out of stuff for your current binging session. Then, a month later, you need to look something up again, and you don't come out for two days, but you do eventually come out.

I suppose. But whoever runs it seems to still be updating it... Also, it depends how in-depth you want to study everything. I could probably spend 7-8 hours on these starmaps alone...
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 There's a new guy at work. He's about my age, works in the same department, and trained in many of the same branches I did (he went to three while I only trained at two, but two of those are the same). While seeking a job, he applied for the same teen librarian position in Anchorage, AK that I did.

ParadoxicalZen he/him Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 Is he cute? Prospective partner for Twi perhaps? (Mind he'd have to meet the standards of the Shard and Twi's following)
Oversleep Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 Two years ago we had a social campaign about an app which allows to check whether the bus is safe or not. The thing is, the ministry started with that video: (prepare for feels)
Mestiv he/him Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 For those interested, the voice in the end says: Don't have mercy for the bus that your kids take. Check the bus by it's licence plate... And the writing on the buses side meant more or less: dirty I remember this campaing, it didn't go well I think
