Kaymyth she/her Posted May 25, 2016 Posted May 25, 2016 When he forgets he's a grown-up, yeah. You could hang with me in Louisiana, where the humidity has decided outside is boring. Why not spread joy inside? Two fans (three, if you count the ceiling fan) and an AC unit, and it's still too hot for humans. Honestly, it sounds to me like your AC unit is having problems. You might want to compare notes with your neighbors and see if they're just as hot, 'cause there's a good possibility that you just need to contact maintenance.

It does seem weird that I never had problems on days much hotter than this one, and now all of a sudden it's too warm.

Suddenly your AC unit isn't keeping it cool? Yeah, is broken. And, see, you're now in this situation where if there is a problem, you can fix it. You do not have to live your life suffering! In fact, because you are renting, your apartment complex is REQUIRED to keep your AC working.

Since I have to go to work in 10 minutes, they'll be out here first thing in the morning. I can keep it reasonably cool for me and Bruce in the meantime. I just….wasn't sure if there was a problem to be fixed….my room back in Tucson was the hottest one in the house during the summer, and all I could do was put up fans everywhere, so I guess I just assumed it was normal.

Nooooo....no, no, no, NO! You poor summer child. In the real world, if winter isn't coming, we make it come! 1
Sunbird she/her Posted May 25, 2016 Posted May 25, 2016 Oh storms... I just Google image searched "food with googly eyes" and I can't stop laughing! 4

I believe I also remember something about your stormwitted parents throttling down the vent in your room because "your siblings' rooms don't need the AC full blast, so yours shouldn't either."

TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted May 25, 2016 Posted May 25, 2016 The school yearbook came out today. As I leafed through my copy, I noticed something. Every sports team has two pages dedicated to it. Not two pages for the individual sport, mind you — two pages for each team. Now, this wouldn't bug me at all on its own. But then I saw what Make-a-Wish got. What did Make-a-Wish — the club which is just closing in on granting its third wish, the club which has raised more than the next 3 schools (which are all wealthier and larger than us) combined, the club which makes a real, awesome impact on the world around its members — what did they get? They got one fourth of a page. One fourth. Does the school have any idea of the work that goes into this? Do they know how amazing what we do is? Apparently not, because the boys' soccer team which didn't make it to semi-finals is getting 8 times the recognition as the group which will end the year having changed the lives of 3 children in dire need. edit: fixed horrendous grammatical mistake Clearly, you have yet to accept that sports teams are the single most important thing a school can have. This coming from someone who was laid off, presumably to budget cuts, only to learn two months later that the school planned to renovate the football field. 1
Quiver he/him Posted May 25, 2016 Posted May 25, 2016 My brother once got suspended from school. I say this not to denigrate him, and I don't want to give details...but it was on account of an argument between himself and a member of the football team. Both received three day suspensions. The football player was in school for all three of those because they coincided with training. His position on the team was 'subtitute'. I understand school athletes don't have things easy...but the favouritism they got at our school, a school which did not compete at a national level, disgusts me. 1
+Slowswift Posted May 25, 2016 Posted May 25, 2016 (edited) The fact that our society prioritizes sports the way they do at all disgusts me, to be honest. Edited May 25, 2016 by Slowswift 3
Mistrunner Posted May 25, 2016 Posted May 25, 2016 And the sports they prioritize most are the most brutal. Football and soccer have the highest concussion rates of high school sports. That's linked to the fact that many NFL players commit suicide. Meanwhile, arts programs everywhere are getting budgets slashed and sometimes cut altogether. Librarians are paid a pittance even though good librarians are one of the greatest factors in getting kids to like reading. College football coaches earn more than academic professors. It doesn't make any sense, and yet it's the societal norm. Sports aren't bad. I think it's great to get exercise and be able to have fun and be competitive with it. It's still ridiculous how overvalued they are. 3
Quiver he/him Posted May 25, 2016 Posted May 25, 2016 (edited) ...well. At least male and female coaches are paid equally? Edited May 25, 2016 by Quiver
Sunbird she/her Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 ...well. At least male and female coaches are paid equally? Not likely...
Haelbarde he/him Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 Oh hey Mestiv's sig! Good thanks! How about you? 3
Kaymyth she/her Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 Bleh, sports. I decided to run track my senior year of high school. Twenty years later my knees still haven't forgiven me. Yeah....that was a thing that happened. And every time they entered my room afterward, they'd comment on how hot it was. See? This was never a normal thing! We still have some deprogramming work to do.
Sunbird she/her Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 So my mom was just texting me some random trivia facts about the Divergent movies and she told me that Theo James's full name (the actor who plays Four) is Theodore Peter James Kinnaird Taptiklis. And my first thought was, "That's almost as good as Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore." (And no, I did not have to look that up.)
The Honor Spren she/her Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 Oh yay . . . we're back to the messed up school system More reasons for me to love homeschool! I get to have an art teacher that lives on a pirate ship and owns parrots. Well, had. He didn't have a "cristian worldview" that suited HEAT's standards.

Sunbird she/her Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=X5oPr4y2e3s The video I did for my APUSH project I find this highly amusing. Were you in the video, or were you filming/managing instead of acting? Also, the voice of the first guy onscreen sounds really familiar to me for some reason...

Master Elodin Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 I can't stop replaying that one guy saying "everyone was accusing each other of being commies".
Young Bard he/him Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 (edited) I find the topic on sports to be extremely topical, to be honest. I just had my School Athletics Carnival. My school is one of the least sportingly inclined groups that have ever existed. (In no other school, has "Chess" ever been an option for sport, simply because they wanted to provide an alternative to skiving for us anti-sports fans.) Usually, the Athletics and Swimming Carnivals are carried through by a very small, but very vocal, group of students. This year was no exception. There were three different M:TG games going on at one point, in addition, to a homemade variation of Warhammer, and the vast majority of people just spread around the outskirts of the field chatting and completely ignoring what was going on. Most events (e.g. 14 years boys 100 metres) got only 3 or 4 people out of 150 who wanted to do it. And yet, this was all planned with no form of worry or concern of any kind. Because it's traditional. Because it represents and acknowledges talent in our school. This was never questioned, not even the concept of just using our own, perfectly good school oval, or just bringing along the kids who wanted to participate. And yet, two different Sausage Sizzles raising money for charity were delayed (one of them three times), even though it requires only a couple students out of an hour total of class to set up and take down afterwards, and yet it's "too difficult" (despite the admin not needing to do anything accept give us the key to the storeroom to set up the barbeque), "too short notice" (despite being told nearly a term in advance) or else just going over some quota for how many out of routine events the school wants to have. And, in the annual magazine that my school puts out, it will be lucky if the Amnesty Committee will get a footnote, while the Athletics and Swimming Carnivals will get a page each, and various other sporting groups will likely get a large chunk of the book as well.
