Kai lifted his head up and listened less closely to the faint noises of anger coming from below. The man seemed to be smashing something, what it actually was was irrelevant to Kai at this particular moment.  The message that had sounded out had been amusing, though Kai had had to lie cheek to the floor to be able to hear it from the room below.  Having few electronics in the room was very useful very often, but in times like this, he really wished he did have some form of getting information - this M character seemed interesting to say the least.  Perhaps Kai could contact him, the job proposed did sound promising.  Kai wondered if M would have use for his particular skills.  He put one knee up and tucked the other leg under it and began to scrape a thin stick of stainless steel down his cheek, drawing faint patterns that stayed for a few seconds and then faded.  He moved it lower down his face, then stabbed it in above his lip.  A small drop of blood rolled down and into his mouth, and he licked his lips, getting rid of the reddish trail.  This had always helped him think, though he had no idea when he'd started doing it.  Most likely when he was a teenager, that would be an ideal time for such a habit to begin.  Yes, likely so.  Kai cleared his thoughts - even if this habit did help him think, it didn't mean he wouldn't go on any tangents at all - and began to mull over M's offer.  Despite not being directed at Kai himself, Kai had no doubts over whether M would appreciate his aid.  Such a man would always appreciate someone talented at breaking and entering, surely.  Kai was, however, disappointed at the lack of a heist, for which he'd been planning on offering his services - though obviously not quickly enough - but the opportunity to work with such an intriguing man was one Kai would not miss out.  He did want to see what the others would do, however.

Kai stood and walked over to his small table and scribbled out a short note on a pad of paper he kept there - he always kept a notepad on the desk in a room, at an angle of 17 degrees (with an error margin of 0.2 degrees) from the left side (he usually used this pad only when writing standing up, as he was now), pivoted from the bottom left corner on both the pad and the desk.  He finished writing and then placed the the pen back in its proper position, diagonally from top left to bottom right across the pad.  Then he sat back down again.  And waited.

The door closed in the room below, and Kai stood up, descending the staircase, and then opened the door with the spare key he'd swiped earlier.  The broken TV sat at the side of the room, and inside Kai saw the small recorder.  He smiled.  He walked over to it, crouched down, and winked at the recorder, before placing his note down.

Then he walked outside and out of the building, trailing the man through the city.

----

The camera auto-focused on the note left;

"My dear M,

What a pleasure it was to hear your little message earlier, my friend.  I am truly seriously considering your offer, though I do have a little more information to gather before making any certain decisions.  I hope you can excuse my indecisiveness in this matter, but hopefully you can understand my doubts.

On a side note, if you have any surveillance in my room, please care to tell me where.  I do like to put on the best show I can, especially for one as special as yourself.

Regards, with love,

Akato Tsugara"

I hope you guys don't mind me jumping in on this a bit late.  I was going to reply earlier, but I got caught up hiking for the past three days and unfortunately missed a lot of the drama.

In addition, Joe, if your character doesn't go to the field today or whatever, I can adjust my post, just give me a shout.

You just sentenced yourself to death by Alex by joining forces with Metacognition.

Metacognition has to have some teammates. I wanted to join The Only Joe, but decided that Meta needed some help.

Woah, is that a threat, Alexander? I don't like M's methods, but at least he's only blackmailing us, not ******* threatening to kill people. And he's even promised some form of pay. That's not something that deserves death.

All of Rikku's crimes are nonviolent, and she's pretty inexperienced when it comes to organized crime. Killing is much different than occasional theft or invading people's rooms. So if you push too hard, she'll bail.

You can arrive first.

What type of umbrellas do you have in your room?

Elbe entered, hair still wet from the rain. She handed a few papers to M, then sat at her desk to review the video feeds from when she'd been gone.

Elbe paused the recording just as the girl's lighter flicked back on again. She frowned. "Pyromania could be difficult to handle," she observed. M didn't respond: he didn't need to.

She returned to watching the video feed until he pointed to the piece of paper he had left on the desk.

"Send this to the lab, please, Ms. Oniel."

She picked it up and read it over quickly. She looked up and arched an eyebrow, already knowing what this would likely mean. "Plan C, then?"

He nodded. "It's best if we treat this as if we have been compromised. We'll have to leave everything except for the records here. We don't know what they could have contaminated."

Elbe Oniel nodded grimly in response and rose, grabbing a few items, then went out without another word.

A man carrying a briefcase stepped out of a sleek black car with dark tinted windows. The passeger side window slid down a few inches, and a deep mans voice spoke to the man who'd just stepped out of the car. "This is it. This is where we've tracked Kira. We've narrowed the suspects down to a relatively small number who are here in this city, whose names are in that briefcase . If you can manage to stop him, then you can have your freedom. If not, well, we won't have to worry about you anymore at least. We'll be keeping a close watch on the proceedings."

With that, the window slid closed and the car sped away. Good riddance. the man with the case thought. He walked to a nearby hotel, and got 2 rooms for himself. 1 on the bottom floor and 1 on the top. It never hurt to be cautious, so if one room got compromised, he'd use the second one. No one would think to look for him at the same hotel if they found one of his rooms.

"Sir? Could you please sign your name right here?" the man at the counter said as he handed the man with the briefcase a pen. "Of course. There we are," he said as he finished signing his name with a flourish. Frank B. Ingram. "Could I have 2 "do not disturb" signs for the rooms? I like my privacy."

"Of course Mr., ah, Ingram. Here you are."

------

After setting up his equipment in his rooms, "Frank Ingram" sat down at his laptop, which held the names of the Kira suspects. Kira. Who cares about him. It's L I'm after. If not for him, I'd be living luxuriously, safely hidden away on my own private island. As it is, now I have to risk my life chasing after some freak with the power to kill from anywhere. But if I know anything about L, it's that he likes a challenge. This case is just his type, and I'd bet my life that he's here. L, I'm coming for you. The real hunt begins now.

Okay, my characer is "Frank B. Ingram."

24 hours until Kira returns from vacation.  Last chance to join the hunt.

Having working knowledge of Death Note may be of an advantage so start watching it already.

I also still need a name from Trel.  If one isn't provided then one will be assigned.

Sorry for the delay in posting this. Prom shenanigans.

Joseph was glad for the thick grey clouds that had rolled in. They cast a shade of darkness over the land, and hid him from view. Even if M did have access to satellites, he shouldn't be able to see him. Unless he misunderstood how satellites worked. Which was quite possible. Hopefully Alex would know how they worked, assuming he showed up.

Joseph slowly turned about, surveying all edges of the field he had picked out. It was large enough that while he could see people on the edges, he couldn't recognize them. He could recognize which were under Umbrella's though. Hopefully they had received his Email, or had been invited by others. Of course, it was also likely at least one was secretly working for M. But Joseph would show them trust, and hope they would do the same. After all, M was working against Kira as well, and Kira was the higher priority.

People began to arrive. He nodded to each in turn, and explained he would start once he had thought everyone had arrived. So they sat, and whispered in pairs to each other. Once five minutes had passed from the arrival of the latest, he decided that no one else was coming.

He cleared his throat, loudly enough to get everyone's attention, and began. "Thank you all for coming today, even those of you whom I didn't invite. I don't know how you knew to arrive here, and I'll want to know that eventually, but for now, I'll assume that you're here because we have two common enemies. Kira and M. Both of them threaten us, so both of them must be removed. But I don't know how to do it. I simply know that we, as a group, can. We're all skilled individuals. Together, we can survive."

I left attendance open ended. If you want to be there, just post, if you don't post, I'll assume you didn't show up.

Akiyama walked away from Joseph's meeting somewhat torn. Following the speech, some ideas and plans were passed around, although few seemed willing to cross the line from planning in the hypothetical to actually pledging resources. They all knew M could have sources in attendance. Now he had to choose: a gamble to take down M, or damage control that would require him to risk compromising some of his sources. He had put off the decision long enough. After a period of consideration, he resolved to join Joseph's group. He couldn't afford any setbacks, not without his business collapsing. He was in, all or nothing.

Rikku stood under an old, blood red umbrella that probably belonged to Hal. Her hair was tucked under a grey cap, and she wore a shapeless, oversized coat that fell to her knees, with plenty of padding underneath to change her body structure. Underneath the coat, she wore rainboots that added a few centimeters to her height.

Rikku looked around. ****, was she late? The others were already here.

"Thank you all for coming today, even those of you whom I didn't invite," Joseph said. "I don't know how you knew to arrive here, and I'll want to know that eventually, but for now, I'll assume that you're here because we have two common enemies. "Nice speech," Rikku said, "But does M have to be an enemy? If M wants us to get rid of Kira, we want to get rid of Kira -- I don't see why that's a bad thing."

EDIT: I keep on forgetting that M is supposed to be bolded and italicized.

"Nice speech," Rikku said, "But does M have to be an enemy? If M wants us to get rid of Kira, we want to get rid of Kira -- I don't see why that's a bad thing."

Joseph nodded along. It was a point he haf expected to be brought up. "Indeed. But that doesn't make us allies. Kira seeks to tear us apart, to kill us one by one. He'll hide away from us, as M is doing now. We need to be able to watch each other, moniter and get to know one another. M's methods for finding Kira are counter productive, because if we follow M's methods of hiding, then we'll lose if M is Kira."

"Right now, we have no proof that M isn't Kira. And until he works with us, so that we can all prove we aren't, he will remain my top suspect for being Kira."

I think this is the first time someone has voted for someone before the game starts. Eh, whatever. I'm just having fun right now.

Rikku frowned. That didn't make any sense.

"If M was Kira, wouldn't you be dead by now?" Rikku asked. "Kira wouldn't bother with me, because I'm just a shoplifter, but you and Hal and Sumiko would have dropped dead already."

She glanced up at the red umbrella over her head, just to make sure it was blocking her face from the sky. It was. "Anyways, weren't we going to write stuff on paper and burn it?"

Sumiko stood underneath her soot stained umbrella. "What if M is finding criminals and hiding their identity to try catch Kira trying to work out who we were so he could then kill us. What if we were meant to be the kindling for M's fire... I don't want to be kindling. I start fires. I don't usually set myself on fire. On purpose at least."

A figure hidden in the trees asked, "How do we know that one of us isn't Kira?" "Don't say that it isn't possible either, he could be playing along and trying to gain trust." "Plus, he could be drawing more people in to this group that are like us."

“What's the fun of paper anyway?” Kai mused aloud, twirling a stainless steel stick around his fingers, making complex patterns that only those with the utmost concentration would be able to see. “M already knows everything we do. He knows everything we say. There's no reason not to suspect there's a mole in this very group. It could be any of us, it could even be you yourself, err,” Kai paused for a second, bringing his stick up and over his eye, then down his nose and stabbing it in above his lip. He licked up the blood intently. “I'm very sorry, but I seem to have forgotten your name. Regardless, it's possible even that I am the mole, though I make no confessions. Not here at least.” He winked at Joseph. He then lay back down on the damp grass, his legs in their usual position, with one under the arched other. He felt the light rain patter against his face, and a small drop of black rolled down his face. Unfortunate, that had taken him a while.

“I say,” he continued, “we let know M know what we do, instead of trying to hide it. It would be much more interesting seeing how he reacts to it. Now that would be entertaining indeed.” He paused for a moment, and then said, “and in regards to Kira, I hope he is. What better person to talk to about secrecy and hiding.”

"You've all raised good points, so let's put it to a vote. Who votes that M is benevolent, and that we should share our actions with him, and who votes we maintain secrecy against him? Or a third option. I vote for Secrecy."
