Hello guys. Winter's back. I'm still waiting for my normal account to get back online, so I made a throwaway account in the meantime. Once I get online, I have a pretty big post for Australia.

Anyway, anyone miss me?

Yay! :D

More Australia posts incoming!

Well as you may have noticed, Edge has joined up and is occupying a flying city so lots more potential interactions now. :D

Here is the new character idea I thought up.  I was thinking it would be fun to start writing him the Dalles, but am open to other suggestions if people think he's not a good fit (if he does move to Dalles, I could see some interesting interactions between him and Lyla).  Preliminary warning: I wanted to write him as a low ranking Lorist.  I know the lorists are kind of mysterious, and we don't want to get to into detail with them, but since Calamity is out now, and he's low ranking (mostly just a field researcher), and thus not privy to some greater mysteries, I thought it might be okay.  If it's not, I'm totally open to changing him.

Ian Buhler

Name: Ian Buhler

Age: Late 20s, early 30s.

Place of Origin: Pennsylvania?

Physical Description:  Ian is short for a man (about 5'5", though he tells people he's 5 1/2 feet tall), and very thin.  His skin is pale and freckle-less, making him very vulnerable to sun burns.  He has light blond hair that hangs around his ears and eyes in a roughly trimmed tangle, which he usually covers with a toque or hat.  He is clumsy, and his movements usually seem awkward or erratic.  He's the kind of guy who often ends up feeling completely invisible when he wants to be noticed, and incredibly suspicious when he does not.  His voice is low in the tenor range, with a slight nasal quality.  He wears a flashy pair of glasses with rounded rims, and is usually wearing some combination of casual and camping gear.

Personality:  Ian is a talented researcher, and disciplined when it comes to study and research.  He has the ability to focus no matter what his surroundings are, a talent which can get him in to trouble when he becomes so focused that he becomes completely oblivious to what is going on around him.  Though he is quite good at problem solving and interpreting disorganized or difficult to understand information, he is horrible at explaining things to other people, and is easily frustrated when others do not catch on to things as quickly as he does.  He thinks of himself as a friendly guy, and hates disappointing or upsetting others.  He can come across as a pompous know-it-all at times, but usually quite charismatic and pleasant to be around.  While he is usually a fairly cautious individual, his strong sense of curiosity often overcomes his natural timidity and gets him into trouble.  He enjoys camping and the outdoors.  He uses technology in limited ways, mostly just to communicate with his peers and record information.  He has developed a working knowledge of how to fix common problems out of necessity, but anything more complex than the simplest of issues to be completely boggling.  Despite his general disdain for technology, he thinks very highly of himself, and would prefer to struggle along alone instead of asking for help.  He is slow to ask others for assistance in most scenarios, and finds it difficult to admit to mistakes.

MO:  As a junior lorist field researcher, Ian travels around the Fractured States researching epics and reporting his findings to his mysterious superiors.  He is largely self sufficient, though he sometimes receives supplies (especially new electronics when his inevitably break down) from the lorists.  He does not know much about the organization he serves, and works mostly independently, enjoying his research in and of itself.

History:  Before Calamity, Ian was a University Student who alternated between travelling and working on a Degree in English Literature.  A proud nerd, he spent most of his time debating the merits of classic novels and films with his peers, and the rest of his time reading or watching said novels and films.  He was in the process of preparing to Graduate and preparing thesis proposals to send out to Grad Schools when epics began to appear and tear the world apart.  After narrowly escaping death a dozen times, and wandering the wilderness alone, he eventually met up with some travelling lorists.  After getting to know Ian, the lorists quickly realized his talent for researching and cataloging information, and invited him to join the mysterious group.  After passing through the initiation process, Ian was given a job as an independent field researcher, and proceeded to wander all over the country in much the same way he had before, only this time he had a purpose to guide him, and a network of colleagues and allies to assist in his survival.

Eventually, he made his way to Corvallis, where he hoped to study Euphoria's powers up close.  At first he managed to avoid being dosed by Euphoria's agents, lest their influence corrupt his ability to observe the epics of the city accurately.  Eventually, his curiosity got the better of him, and he fell in with the other humans for a "Emotional Temperature Check" appointment, in the hopes that he would be able to see Euphoria up close.  After waiting in line for hours, and going through air-port level security, he was disappointed to find that his visit was in vain.  When he reached the front of the line, he sat down in front of the wrong side of a pane of one-way glass, and slid his hand palm down through a hole in the bottom.  He felt the light touch of a single finger on the back of his handed, which lasted for less than a minute.  Then, a light next to his seat flashed, and security escorted him out, allowing the next person in.

What Ian didn't realize at the time was that those brief moments had changed his emotional perception of the past few weeks, making him view them with fondness.  After that, he became less vigilant about avoiding being dosed with Euphoria's powers, and soon settled into his role as a servant in truth, instead of using it as a cover to gain information.  Weeks and months slid by almost unnoticed.  Even when Ian missed doses, he could only remember feeling anything besides happiness for the past week or so, and those memories were always altered at his biweekly Emotional Temperature Check appointments.   It was not until Euphoria vanished that Ian reviewed his journal and realized what had happened.  Not wanting to get caught in the Epic's spell of complacency again, Ian snuck out of Corvallis the next time the bubble dropped, and began making his way to the Dalles, in the hopes of studying some of the 'tame' epics who he had heard were living there, and to compile the research he had managed to gather in Corvallis to send to his superiors.

Let me know what you think.  I was going to do a scene from his viewpoint, but it's getting late, so I'll try to get that up tomorrow.

I like the concept but I see the Dalles is as good at keeping its location secret as always. Although, the city has some connections with the lorists thanks to Redlight, I doubt an fledgling field investigator, assuming they have those, would be privy to any of that information.

I think I need a spreadsheet on who intends to have envoys send to who, now that Winter is in the game again.

I really like the idea of a fledgling lorist with a backstory including another Oregon city, and I think he'd create some interesting subplots in The Dalles, especially if he ran into Redlight. Although, as Edge pointed out, The Dalles may be too secretive for word to reach any lorist who wasn't already well connected within the lorist community. Still, he could wind up in The Dalles if he heads north initially and follows disused highways. Google Maps informs me that it's a 57 hour walk from Corvallis to The Dalles (making it about a week's journey, if he puts in 8 hours a day), so one plausible scenario might be for Ian to leave Corvallis, heading north and then northeast, not really knowing where he's going except away, coming across an old highway sign or two listing The Dalles, and deciding to go there just long enough to bum some supplies and rest up, planning to flee before he's suckered in like he was with Euphoria. When he sees that the town is under vanilla control, he could decide to stay.

I'm sure there are other potential scenarios, but that's one I can see working.

Did 57 hours even pass since the fact that Euphoria went missing became open knowledge?

Not sure. Let me see how long it'd be if he took a bike.

….

Okay, 16 hrs and 34 min, if he took a bicycle. That's much more reasonable.

I haven't read Calamity yet, so I can't actually comment on the viability of that as a character thing.

As a player, I am all for more Lyla interaction!

And as an english graduate, I feel obligated to support my "peep" in getting into the game. : P

Good point.  I'd assumed that, as a Lorist, he'd know about the Dalles, but you are correct to point out his junior status would likely mean he wasn't privy to its location.  Euphoria vanished at the beginning of the last game day in Corvallis, so it's been over 24 hours, but not 48 yet, which means I might have to wait to insert him into the Dalles (which is fine with me).  I could see him getting his hands on a bicycle or motor bike, or something, so that mode of transport could work if others are okay with it.

As for finding the Dalles, what if he discovered the Dalles on his way to Corvallis?  Then, as he's leaving Corvallis, he would already know where the Dalles was, and be able to travel straight to it instead of meandering.  I'll keep working on the transportation thing.

ThunderSpear up again. As usual, feedback is appreciated. And someone check that spell-checker...I swear that underappreciated and relaxingly are real words. Neither of which the checker is  Also, anyone see my idea for a GunSmith epic?

Eh. Perhaps I'm not the best judge of this, since I'm sort of "meh" about everything anyway, but the power didn't seem too useful. We can kind of just decide whatever weapons our characters are using on the fly anyway  :P All it takes is the power of quality storytelling.

Where's Kobold been this past week or so?

Week? It's been like this for like a month now. He hasn't responded to any of my PMs regarding the RP, either. I miss both him and his writing. :(

Listen to this:

Now replace "baby" with "Kobold" and you'll have an musical rendition of my current feelings. :P

...any chance of you recording a full cover for this parody? :P

But yeah, sorry. I keep meaning to respond to the PMs, at least, but then they wind up slipping my mind when I realize I have nothing more to write than "Sorry, I'll try to write something soon."

So with that in mind.

Sorry, I'll try to write something soon. :P

@Weird: seems like a cool, useful power to have. Not too OP either.

Yay! It was really, really random. Not sure where he (she?) would actually go, haven't done much beyond that general idea.

@Everyone: Feel free to steal that idea. Not sure when I'll get around to fleshing it out.

Funny out-of-continuity idea:  Someone steals some of Rainmaker's DNA to make a motivator out of, but the only current they can get to work properly is the one that activates her shining skin power, providing them with a flashlight that makes a very powerful epic angry and helps her to track them down.

Maybe it's not that funny, but it is in my mind.

Also, Wpx, I didn't notice the edit of your earlier post before, but I am enjoying the Rainmaker/Thunderspear exchange as well, haha.

That device would be called "The Cursed Flashlight" or "Suicidal Flashlight" :)

Waiting for things to move on for my characters in Corvallis I keep wondering if I should adopt some orphaned character somewhere. Any suggestions which one? :)

Its counterpart being made from Shiny Sparkle DNA.

Depends, are there any locations you have an interest in specifically?

Portland and Dalles are places I'm interested the most. I more or less know what's going on there (I'd obviously do my research before joining the city :P) and I like the general concepts of those cities.

I'm frankly amazed at how quickly the Rainmaker/Thunderspear interaction is going

Like, a conversation between characters.... that doesn't take weeks? What????

There was an abandoned character named Hydron in the first few pages of The Dalles, and then there was also Ricochet at the beginning of Portland. I'm not sure if any of them are actually adoptable, since they never really enmeshed themselves into their respective threads' politics in the first place and neither of those threads is looking for new Epics at the moment.

There's also Freq's gang, I suppose. We were planning to add an Epic with the ability to create a forcefield around his body and an Epic that could weaponize sound. Kobold seemed opposed to the idea of adding new Epics on principle, though, and his opinion carries a lot of weight.

Yeah XD...I come from a couple forums where while we usually have shorter posts, we're lancing them back and forth, usually 7-8 per day when we get enough people. I've been taking a bit of a break from those, but the habit still stands ^o^

Thanks!

BTW guys, found out I was biromantic gay over my quite long break. Figured I might as well say it now.

Congratulation.

Portland and Dalles are places I'm interested the most. I more or less know what's going on there (I'd obviously do my research before joining the city :P) and I like the general concepts of those cities.

Let's see, in Portland we have Ricochet as already mentioned, who kind of dropped out very early on after Corpsemaker was set free and whose powers make him especially bouncy, if I remember right, Parity working with the Empire, who could leech color out of objects for either destructive or healing purposes, a lot of Epics in Thoughttown (and unless anyone heard anything from Mashadar, I suppose we can add Sightline to those again). While on the topic, Blackhoof are there still any Epics in the Empire left that would be open for somebody to take?

In the Dalles we have a couple of the Slivers, including the already mentioned Hydron and Event Horizon, who had somewhat black hole like powers, while Kobold was against adding new Epics to Freq's gang, there's still Sunspot, with light based powers, ranging from blinding people to shooting lasers, For the city guard, there's Florist, who can manipulate plants and so far has kept to himself in his garden and Ozymandias with a bundle of powers of super speed, healing factor and decay through increased entropy. Then there's also team Paladin still around, which consists of three Epics.

By "someone," do you mean Backtrack?

Then he mixes up the Shiny Sparkle and Rainmaker lamp and hijinks ensues.

oh, uh, no idea to be honest. Candyflame was taken I know. I think that is all the Empire Epics accounted for, right?

Perhaps we should start an "adoptable chracters thread" where we can keep an updatable list?  That might help when new players are interested.  We could also star characters that are high priority to adopt, or something.
