So Quiver, did you think about hooking up your Epic fangirl lyra up to a gifter Epic?

I like the idea, just haven't had the chance to look through gifter epic's and pick one for her fan club yet.

Anyone wanna bid on a crazy epic fangirl? C'mon! How can you say no to this?

(Epic!Human!Lyra will absolutely write Epic fansongs and ballads. This is a thing she does)

...Though, er, sidenote. Tangetially related to this (in that it involves creating characters).

Is there any advise you guys have for how to.. well, do better about roleplaying? Not sure if my stuff so far has been "good enough".

Let's see, there's Nighthound... stay away from him as far as possible, unless you want all of the nightmare fuel.

There's Jack "Vapor Snake" Hayter, who given his disposition towards his own nature as an Epic wouldn't react all that well to an Epic fangirl. The Dalles would be a relatively safe place for her though. The Epic hunter part for Bon Bon would have to be altered a bit though, probably to soldier.

Euphoria in Corvallis... although she's MIA right now, so there wouldn't be any charater interaction.

Iconoclast, may actually be less safe than around Nighthound.

I... think that's actually all of them.

As for the roleplaying, I'm not all that good at giving general writing advice but I think the one big difference to normal writing is managing what is often time only one action to feel completel while at the same time not making it look like the other characters are just standing around doing nothing. Personally, I think you're doing just fine though.

Ya know, my first character concept was an epic hating soldier in the Dalles.

Granted, he was a male (and based off of Dick Grayson), but still. Easily adjustable to Bonnie...

You know, while I'm already pluking my characters, we're still searching for soldiers in Jack's squad. Which would be kind of fun with one of them being part of the gifted squad but not really caring for Epics and the other one wanting the powers but not being given any of them. Or you know, the Epic hating part works as well.

Well, I'm making my way through Dalles...but they probably would work well as a pair.

Even if I need names for them. Lyla and Robyn? Eh... I'll figure something out.

(Actually...would Lyla being a fangirl of Koeschi be...too odd?)

It'd be interesting to see, but she'd need to keep it to herself. Koschei terrorized a lot of families, and while I haven't pegged an exact number for how many people died, it was a lot. So publicly waving her Koschei fangirl flag would be insensitive at best and might get her arrested at worst, if she took it too far.

Hmm.

Blackhoof offered the idea of epic fangirling as a coping mechanism after a family massacre.

Koeschi is the top dog villain who killed a lot of people.

...

Fangirling over a guy who, potentially, wiped out your family is messed up in ways that could be kinda interesting to write.

I'm definitely not opposed. She'd be interesting in a car crash sort of way—horrifying, but you just can't look away.

So long as Kobold has no objections, I approve.

So...here's my thoughts. A pretty young kid, maybe sixteen or seventeen; point is, she's too young to remember the world before Epics.

And post-Calamity...well, Epic's are too big a thing to ignore. Add in some repressed trauma related to the Deathless One, and you've got a character who wants to be an epic, who is obsessed and fascinated with them, who spends her free time fangirling over them.

And part of that will, undoubtedly, be played as comic relief. But I figured there are some interesting, stormed up implications from it, too.

I'm just trying to figure out how to fit a kid into the Dalles.

(Though the 'annoying tagalong getting underfoot' trope might apply here...)

More seriously, I say go for it! You could craft a very tragic but interesting wreck of a person out of this. Almost like a Stockholm Syndrome directed at someone who's long dead.

She'd definitely get in trouble if she made her obsession known publicly. She would be considered to have very bad taste but wouldn't be a risk to city security worthy of arresting. If she went around talking about it though, she'd run into trouble; low level bureaucrats would go out of their way to make life difficult for her, she'd be shunned by pretty much everyone, and her home would probably get regularly vandalized.

She'd either have to be quiet about her obsession, mask it in a professional interest in Epics (potentially making her a partner for Redlight?) or stubborn enough to clean up graffiti and suffer through the abuse of all these people who just don't understand her.

Any way you approach this, though, I find her to be one of the most interesting character concepts to have been recently proposed. I really want to see what you do with this. :D

Ya know, maybe I've been thinking too much about Batman v Superman, but the Stockholm thing actually makes me think of Jimmy Olsen or Lois Lane (particularly Silver Age versions).

Part of the thing with those comics is that they're obsessed with Superman. Lois is constantly trying to figure out his secret identity, Jimmy is his pal/super-clingy best friend.

I'm still using Lyra as a base (either Lyla or Robyn as a name), but considering Steelheart is "evil Superman", doing " evil" Jimmy Olsen/Lois Lane seem's appropriate, almost?

How much do people really know about Koschei? While Lyla could be obsessed with Epics in general, I can imagine her pulling a David, and trying to get everything she can find about Koschei. It could even be passed off as a 'he was a traumatic figure, people have feelings about that', rather than 'she is obsessed and adores him'.

Hmm. There might be some Harley Quinn in there, actually...

But, having a professional "excuse" to be around Epics all the time? That would be useful for her, I think.

Let's see, who's around Epics a lot and could use some kind of assistant.

Let's see, here are the basics:

  • He called himself Koschei the Deathless, though he answered to Koschei. Wore a purple cloak and gold circlet atop his blond hair, carried several pistols and knives, as well as a few samples of poisonous plant life.
  • He could heal and self-resurrect, using it to…well, you've seen what he did in the flashbacks.
  • His real name was Victor Dyachenko. Vondra refers to him by this name, so while most people in The Dalles might call him Koschei, his real name wouldn't be unknown.
  • He ruled The Dalles briefly, renaming it New Eden. Fancying himself a god, he did not take kindly to other (non-Koschei-centric) religions.
  • One of his cronies, Headshot, escaped The Dalles after Koschei's death and went to Portland, where he assisted in taking over and ruling the Museum of Natural Awesomeness until the Empire of Light took that over.
  • Reader used to work for him.
  • He killed Remington's entire family, one at a time, until Remington killed him.
  • Autumn didn't watch Koschei die, but she was present when he did.

And going off what Edge said, her search for more information about Koschei would give me the perfect opportunity to add in more Koschei flashbacks.

Sparks.

Reader would have good reason to out a Koschei fangirl fairly quickly, wouldn't he?

Working around him might...actually make the concept harder than I thought.

Unless she bribed him, yes.

That could make Redlight the best choice, unless she has the aforementioned bribe for Reader. Which could add an interesting dynamic. Actually, mail-mi, what are some reasons why Reader wouldn't out a Koschei fangirl?

Posted

Reader would make the concept most difficult to pull off, since there's not a lot a teenage vanilla could offer him to make him refrain from exposing all her darkest secrets. Exposing people's darkest and most troubling secrets is kind of Reader's thing.

Autumn Glass doesn't seem to spend much time researching Epics and doesn't strike me as the kind of person who'd want to hear about them all the time. But, she is a very understanding person who might realize Lyla's troubled psychology and try to help her, if healing is what you ultimately want for the character.

Redlight is a bitter and flatly unlikable person who could make a good straight person for Lyla's quirky weirdness. She keeps files on all sorts of Epics, Koschei included, and would be happy--or at least, not resistant--to teaching another vanilla what she knows.

I personally think Redlight is the best fit, but it's all up to you. :)

Working very closely with Red light would also give her plenty of opportunity to test out her "epic radiation" theory.

Honestly, one thing I had been considering was...the Jimmy Olsen thing, Lyla/Robyn collecting and taking photographs of Epics for herself. Considering Red light has photographs, it might not be too much of a stretch for some kind of connection there.

I can definitely imagine a vanilla creeping around The Dalles sneaking pictures of all the Epics in the Guard.

This is Scribbler eating cereal in her house.

This is Edgerunner tying her shoelaces.

This is Deathwish talking to a lady.

This is Deathwish rubbing his face after getting slapped.

That sort of thing. :P

This is Vapor Snake not believing me when I tell him it's for school.

Actually, what is the state of the Dalles education system? Do they have school? Would Lyla/Robyn/whatever even be able to read or write?

So..yeah, guess I'm leaning towards Redlight, though retconning in an assistant at this point might be tricky? Unless I had her written off-screen because she was waiting for pictures from the Panda Invasion to develop.

(Or, alternatively, have her hear about Vapour Snake and have her be, basically, stalking him and Autumn right now)

There haven't been a lot of references to The Dalles school system, but there are definitely schools there. She'd be literate and probably pretty decently educated overall.

One option would be to have her just be getting the job as Redlight's assistant, as opposed to retconning her in.

Posted (edited)

There's definitely a school. One of the people Quicksilver just mutilated was a schoolteacher, in fact.

As for retconning... well, there are a lot of ways to go about this. Vapor Snake was entirely retconned in, after all, and that was a much bigger addition to the city than a teenage vanilla that tags along with Redlight every now and then.

EDIT: What Twi said.

Hmm. Fair enough. I mean... if she is decently educated, and already show's an interest in Epic's, her following Redlight (in an official capacity or otherwise) isn't exactly that egregious.

(If it is an unofficial type thing - less "I have a job!" and more "She stopped telling me to go away!"- that might explain not being around Reader. I mean...what security risk could a dorky genki girl with a camera possibly be?)

Any objections to a post about a hoodie wearing papparazzi hanging around outside a building to get a shot if Vapour. Snake.

Reader needs someone who provides him with all his wine.

He'd...actually probably just hold the secret over her head and threaten to reveal it whenever she doesn't want to do what he tells her to.

Speaking of Reader is there anything for him to do right now?
